As a retired biology teach in the States, their reintroduction reminded me of the reintroduction of condors to the Western U.S. Many thanks from a foreign viewer! I'm glad to see more rewilding going on in unused farming. I'm also a big fan of dehumanizing land too. There's so much sprawl. Just look at satellite images of the US Eastern seaboard. One bright continuous zone of strip malls, urban and suburban mega-acreages of habitat lost. It would be nice someday to wake up to a world after 60 or so years where we just stopped making so many people. Less is more.
Himalayan Balsam is more of a symptom of a problem than the problem itself. It grows densely in areas with high nutrient concentrations. Control the the influx of nutrients and it will decline. Also robust cattle breeds eat it. Were cattle graze the plant does not grow, as they selectively eat it. So just herd some cattle through impacted areas every year before it starts producing seeds, then it will disappear.
What is indigenous to one area (pacific northwest) is invasive in others. We love our rodedendrons here. Good luck with getting rid of all invasive species.
In Yellowstone, management officials reintroduced (grey) wolves from (BC or Montana) were brought back. It worked but may not be a suitable answer to your specific regional characteristics. Still herbivores have generally been controlled by some sort of predation.
Been thinking about starting deer hunting. This has pushed me towards that idea. All ecosystems benefit from a top predator and it doesn't look like we are getting those wolves back anytime soon.
This documentary is already five years old the producers probably won't read this comment but if you do - and there is still some rhododendron left - leave it alone please. There is no such thing as an "invasive species" (except kudzu maybe). I may sound like a hippie but with plants, theres always a reason why they are there. For example: Some time in the early 90's (i think) Impatiens glandulifera was brought to us, by accident. And at first, people were worried it would smother our native plants. So, people resorted to plucking it out, just like you did with the rhododendron. But, it didn't harm any of our plants here. It's now very popular with beekepers because it provides nectar when most other plants are not blooming anymore. And it looks gorgeous and is edible too! So, even if it's not yet clear why it grows in your beautiful oak forests, there most definetely is a reason for it. Just try to observe it in it's new habitat and see which impact it will have. Just a friendly suggestion from a fellow nature lover who would love to visit Ireland 😉
Are you off your head Ireland is way too small a country to bring back bears and wolves, it was alright when it was an uninhabited island covered in forests, give you’re head a shake.
Just plant trees and plant plant plant. That's the answer. And of course do not interfere into nature too much and leave it as wild as possible. And you will see the benefits to NATURE with transformation of countryside like it used to be long before so-called "industrial revolution".
All the planting comes to nought if you permit grazing during establishment. Whether the establishment is by natural regeneration (within or peripheral to existing woodlands) or by planting on "open ground" (of either climax Oak or succession species, Birch and Willow) it is all very significantly less effective unless the grazers are kept out. I think we can say that Wolves and Lynx will not reduce the Red and other deer species through predation fast enough, so deer management by legal culling with local meat processing must be encouraged. The England Woodland Creation Offer contains significant support for "assisted rewilding" if applied in ambitious ways, by providing a contribution of standard costs for deer fencing and financial support for population health surveys. As a forester I am interested in whether polecats will chase out grey squirrels...we all have our own focus areas, there will never be conformity or agreement over all re-introductions but, at some point, livestock farmers who can turn their minds to rewilding at scale will stand to make more money than sheep farmers who stick with the home-produced Vs NZ lamb argument which is so passe in post-Brexit Britain.
Rid the land of feral goats and invasive Sika deer. Also sheep farming is by far the most destructive thing I've seen in Ireland. The lands look like moonscapes
Too many deer in kerry. Why not resettle them in Connemara. No wild life there. We could also introduce lynx. And most important are wild boar. They could deal with invasive plants.
You really shouldn't spray glyphosate without wearing a moonsuit. And no it doesn't stay where you spray it, that's industry hype. Do you really want to drink it... because I don't

I hope you get your wolf wish. They are fierce helpful predators. An ecosystem without them is not complete or healthy.

Pretty sure you need a locence for culling otherwise you could do more damage than good
Surely those small rhodo seedlings can be pulled out instead of herbicide spray which would be used on larger specimens?
