- my music with image. This music for chorus is roughly in the form of a motet and the title references psalm 91 (I will translate Qui Habitat as 'whoever dwelleth'.) Psalm 91 I learned recently is about seeking confidence in a world that has become cynical. I came across this information while investigating the music of Anton Bruckner and discovered that he wrote about 40 motets - which I found to be beautiful.
The close up mage I chose is a J&L Steel Mill in the hey day of steel production in Pittsburgh. I chose it because I know that view very well - also the smell of sulphur as well as the smoke and a pink sky at 4PM. All are long gone now - save for the memories that I harbor of that time and place.
I see time passing as having a spiritual aspect... as things that seemed so important have become nostalgic and benign. It was impossible, though, to ignore the power that the mills imposed on the environment... in addition to the psychological impact they made on the inhabitants back then. All those who lived nearby were in a 'habitat'. Pittsburgh was a cohesive place that bound people together inside the middle class that it supported. Life was not easy but there was an underlying sense of security that big industry provided. Jazz music, baseball, amusement parks, ice cream, breweries and deli food were part of an escape that enhanced family life and the simple but noble value systems that came with it.
Thank you for listening and reading - phil.
