This is how it would've been played in 1985- short, stabby synths, pads degraded quickly over time because of the technology of the devices, there was a lot of New Wave influence in this one, which was clearly lacking in the Weeknd version.
The song in its original version already has pretty much the exact same beat as "Take On Me," which I suspect was an intentional homage in keeping with the general eighties theme.
I actually tried that with my TC-55 Tapecorder once. It's basically like a Walkman, except it's huge and heavy as a brick. And it has a bad belt in it that makes the sound warble like crazy. The whole experience was... odd. Although, I felt pretty proud of myself in sort of a geeky way while I was doing it.
