School children throughout Australia hold thousands of savings accounts with the Commonwealth Bank. This film explains how their money is cared for and used by the bank for great National works, finance of business, building and a hundred other things as well. Several children are taken on a visit to the Commonwealth Bank; they see the tellers at work, the complicated method of book-keeping and the placing of all the cash in the great vaults under the bank. My bank was the State Savings Bank of Victoria and the State Government and inept management of the bank destroyed it through bad investments. They were good days however and the banks did care about their customers and they paid reasonable interest on savings accounts. Unlike today of course where they pay little or no interest and it's all about greed and corruption. Australia was a great country once but not now.
My father-in-law is in this film! Thank you National Archives for this absolute gem. My father-in-law over dinner one night recently just started talking about a film he was in at school all about school banking, he had to wear the same clothes to school two days in a row 😂. He is one of the four children who get taken to the bank. He said he was a ‘superstar’ at school for a little while after! The detail he was coming out with was amazing. When he mentioned it was the Commonwealth Bank I turned to the internet thinking surely it’s in an archive somewhere and bam! Here it is! We are thrilled. He is 85 now! Such a great piece of history, thank you!

They still do the dollamite banking at some schools. My 3 children have been in it and the youngest is 13 still has a dollamite account.

Those were the days, when the bank paid you interest.
The CBC bank man came every Wednesday.
You put 20 cents in.
You had a bank book.
Your bank was for life.
I remember the Commonwealth bank school accounts when a bank rep came to schools and children took thier money to deposit, after years of saving i put my bank book away, years later i went to withdrawl my savings and was surprised when they said the account was closed due to inactivity, imagine now how one childs savings was taken by the Commonwealth bank, now imagine this happened all over Australia and many like myself suffered a loss, did you ever have the same experience?. in reflection to this later day the banks are still corrupt and seem to be untouchable with thier fraudulent behavior, i also remember a lot of older people did nlt trust or keep thier money in any bank, we need that wisdom today.
I used to love school banking. Imagine a bnk giving you interest these days? Now its all about fees, because its easier than doing hard work to make more, so charging us to use our money was the next greedy step... Go the shareholders, right?
Wouldnt they be charging us to store our money safely..like insurance for money. Why do you expect a free service?
I remember the Bank coming to Primary School. Much later than this tho.
I had a little blue savings book. I want to say it was The Wales Bank (which I think is now Wespac?) Took the cash out when I was a teenager and my Mum went wild!
I don’t think we ever had this lesson at school, if we did apparently I wasn’t listening - I’ve only just started to really grasped the importance of saving in my 50’s - now I have lots of years to catch up on ☹️
I remember this, I used to have a school bank book, it was great!
They were so quaint! The bank clerks, and the customers!
No wonder there was full employment back then!
No calculator. All mental arithmetic.
Got mine back in 1966.
One of the kids was depositing 2/- , I was only ever given a sixpence!
He probably earned it doing chores.
For me it was 50 cents.
I had 2 shillings. So rich !
I'm sure one of those kids is a young Neddy Smith, eyeing future enterprises.

By grade 6 I'd saved near on $150 enough for a 10 speed bike , this was 1976, you can now buy a bike cheaper , but it was a english Raleigh bike , good quality in those days

One of them is my father-in-law. He out of the blue stated chatting about this ‘film’ his was in when he was at school. The more he described it the more I though, this must be out in cyberspace somewhere & here we found it! He’s one of the four kids who go to the bank!! 😊

Film was published in 1951.
It could be - looks a bit like 1949 too, which is probably more accurate. The footage shoot always predates the release of the film.

?They are automatically in debt for the next few decades with the current state of affairs.
...to teach kids how to save & learn how to budget.
These days they need to be teaching the kids about investing in shares and cryptocurrency - the banks don’t give you shit anymore
