Muay thai is actually very popular given the conditions.
Unlike other styles like Wrestling, Kung fu, Karate, BJJ, TKD, you name it. How many Thai people in the US? Only 300,000 people. Compating this to British, Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian, Korean people, etc and there are over 2 millions of them in the states. People bought their cultures (martial art with them). Now, among these popular martial arts, Muay thai was the last to be exposed to the Americans. Yet, its considered to be the most popular striking base in MMA.
Muay thai is already very popular as is, considering it came later. If it was Muay thai that was introduced in the states before the others, the other stand up styles probably wouldnt even be as popular as Muay thai right now ie. Lethwei and Kyokushin (Karate influenced with Muay thai element).
