Well, I read a book called "Mother Knows Best" from Serena Valentino, and basically, Gothel's mom was a popular witch leader and had a greenhouse full of rapunzel flowers (the glowing flowers) and she told Gothel and her three sisters the enchantment to use the flower's power. The book is basically Gothel's past and how she turned evil and I highly recommend the Villains novel series of Serena!
Edit: In the Villains series there are more Villians to choose from, like Cruella, Ursula, Evil Queen and etc. Its basically their backstory sksksk
