I actually cried Shy when you made your announcement. Anyone who has watched your channel knows two things...you are an artist and are meant to design gardens! So excited for you! Indoor gardening and my green babies got me through losing two of my three sisters in ten months. And I was also on anxiety meds during that time. But I'm med free now and healing more each day. Working in a garden and/or in an indoor garden is just a huge help and soothing balm to our psyches. Highly recommend ❤
Oh, Molly! I’m always so humbled by how much you support and motivate me. Thank you for sharing your experience. You were dealt such a tough hand, and it's truly encouraging to hear how plants helped you through it. Here’s to us on our healing journey! ❤️❤️
Being in the garden is the best medicine for mental welbeing and working on your garden should bring you peace and joy from how it makes you feel when you work and look at it as everyone has their own ways that bring them joy in their own gardens.
I did the wrong courses and realise now, years later, I am a gardener, I use to drive past the horticulture classes, and wish I had joined it or transferred to that course, but didn’t have the nerve to! Go for it it’s in your soul, I still love gardening but wish I had a career in it years ago.
Thank you for your honest share in this video. I enjoy watching you take care of your succulents and cactus. They are a big part of my backyard and I've been enjoying them for over 30 years. I have done so much deep thinking out in my garden. You inspire me so much! You go girl😊
What a wonderful bit of time spent with you from halfway around the world! Your garden is delightful, and we share a love for cacti and euphorbia! I too have mental health challenges day to day and find that gardening brings me joy! The anticipation of a new bloom, offshoot, or volunteer baby plant is awesome! It is something I look forward to and keeps me going... It also marks the seasons of growth, bloom, dormancy (senescence) that helps keep me balanced. Insert 'Seasons of Love' snippet of tune here! I was a theatre kid and forever an I.T.S. Member, so the theatrical and drama will always be with you in all your endeavors (in a good way!). I look forward to more of your journey and thank you for sharing! Love and light to you! ...and may you continue to grow more beautiful! 💗
Oh I love this ❤️ Thank you for the beautiful reminder that theatre will always be a part of me. It's amazing how so many of us have found solace in gardening for our mental health 🙂 I hope this continues to be the case for you
ahhh, the happy feeling once I see a new video as I just woke up this morning😊😊 Do whatever makes you HAPPY, be it change in career or changing things the garden 😊
Congratulations on your enrolment! You definitely have an eye for design. I got into cacti as a teenager and had wanted to study horticulture. It didn’t pan out and while I have enjoyed my career as a librarian, all I really want to do is garden - for no other reason except I love it!
Thank you for the honest chat 😊 I could see the stress on your face talking about the theater challenges, but the peace that was with you when you said you left that field and enrolled in garden design school! How exciting and inspiring! 💚
Im going through the same life crisis. Anxiety is bad. So.. i like playing in my garden and taking care of my house plants. I also like making succulent arrangements to give to my neighbors. I quit my job.. but I'm starting a new job next week .i was burnt out ..i needed a break. I understand what you're going through... keep smiling❤❤❤ your garden is beautiful!!
Thank you for sharing that Michelle- I hear you ❤️ Fresh starts are welcome, aren't they? And I hope it brings you what you need. Keep playing the in garden and sharing that joy with your neighbours! ❤️❤️❤️
I never would have expected such complete openness and honesty from you. You appear far more reserved than you showed in this video, and I absolutely loved it. You're an amazing person, Shy, with so much to offer! I'm very happy that you've decided on landscape design as you've already shown how good you are at it! Congratulations and good luck! xxo
You do so beautifully bring beauty in plants. Now spending all this time with plants, the plants will bring the beauty out in you! Heal Shy. You are loved.
Vertigo is so tough and I’m sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with it for 10 years. Hope tending to your cactus babies give you moments of solace and ease 🌵🙂
I’ve always enjoyed growing things since the age of about 18 but when my change of life ( menopause ) began in 2018 it really made me feel soooo drained of energy ( as well as suffering from many different weird menopause related symptoms that I will not get into or this will be a long post ) & during that stressful time I saw a few posts on Facebook & Instagram relating to succulents & I caught the succulent bug. It really helped get me out of my head. There’s something satisfying & rewarding about nurturing plants. I was gifted an aloe vera in 1996 as a housewarming gift which was my first succulent but I didn’t realise what it was back then & almost killed it by overwatering. It sat in a pot for almost 20 years looking half alive. I managed to bring it back to health thanks to all the new knowledge I had acquired thanks to the internet & my new passion. I noticed you have the same lavender plant as me. ( lavandula dentata ) I like to dry the flowers & place them in little mesh bags & use them in the bathtub. I gift many but save some to use when I have a bath. It makes your skin wonderfully soft. 😊 Best wishes with your garden design course.
Thank you Susan! I’m pretty sure I did a similar thing with an aloe vera I got years ago. Kept it indoors and overwatered. Finally started thriving when I took it outside. I love the lavender in my garden (yep, it’s lavendula dentata French Revolution). Thank you for the drying tip! I’ll have to try it out sometime 🙂
Wishing you all the best in your new endeavor God bless you & Tim! You already have a beautiful garden; your gardening design classes will only enhance your gardening! Wishing you the very best!
Gardening fills my soul like nothing else. Your garden is beautiful and creative. First time visiting your channel. Just subscribed. My growing zone is not great on succulents overwintering but I have a few.
Different type of video but we got to know you a little better. I also use my plants for this reason and I am blessed that I have found this hobby early on in life ❤ take care Joy you made the right choice 😊
By far the best video you have shared to date. Thank you for sharing all of that with us and being so open! Thank you for letting us get to know you better. ❤
Oh my god LAURA! Your videos got Tim and I through the pandemic and continue to inspire us to this day! Thank you for your encouragement, you are my QUEEN! ❤️
I am in menopause, and I have the same. Anxiety and vertigo. So, when you said the humidity triggered the vertigo, OMG that is me all day. And did I mention I live in Florida? I am really thinking about moving. I love working my garden but when I have an episode of hot flash it is to the point that my entire body is drenched. I've had people ask me "are you alright"? and I just say "own personal inferno". It's horrible. I've had heat cramps in my arms and fingers. So, I have to be very careful. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for sharing 💕 I’m so sorry you have to go through this. Anxiety and vertigo feed off each other and are invisible to everyone but the experiencer. I hope you’ve got some kind of support to help you through this. Keep gardening, and take things slower on the more humid days 🌸
All the best for your course. How exciting! I like stalky succulents too. Here’s some book recs I thought of while you were talking about mental health, change, what gardens give us etc… Modern Nature by Derek Jarman is essential reading for any gardener. The Well Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith is a really good read. A couple of gardens with an aesthetic that I think you’ll like, (if you haven’t already) check out the Ruth Bancroft Garden and the Danger Garden, there are books about both gardens and also lots of photos and free info online.
Oh my gosh THANK YOU! I love a good gardening book and have added these to my wishlist. Also time to acquaint myself with Ruth Bancroft Garden and Danger Garden. Thank you so much for sharing! 🙂
Ohh sorry to hear 😞 for sure gardening comes with it's challenges. I hope some have been able to bounce back, and that you can bring in some newer plants that you love.

Very nice succulent plants
Thank you so much!
Portulaca is an annual succulent
It can behave like a perennial in zones 10-12. I’m zone 10 equivalent in Sydney so I’ve had them survive winters before. Not this year though.
