Deck donor from the original league here! Love to see you once again playing the song of he who delivered us, the song of Feroz! WAHWAHWAHWAH A lot has changed since April of 2022. The Initiative didn't exist, because Commander Legends: Dungeons & Dragons: Battle for Baldur's Gate released in June! The effect it had on Legacy was huge, especially once White Plume Adventurer and Seasoned Dungeoneer hit MTGO (in November, if I recall correctly). Afterwards, decks became more prepared than ever to beat big dumb combat guys, whether via removal or by going over the top, and traditional "fair" decks are now pretty dead. Even with EI and WPA now banned, the effects on the format linger (and hilariously there are MORE Initiative creatures on MTGO now than there were before the WPA ban). This seems like a bad time to be playing Hornstill specifically and Standstill in general. We're not able to turtle up behind Standstill as effectively. We're getting Wastelanded off Urza's Saga. Our minotaurs are getting plowed or just plain run over. That said, I think there are some minor issues with the version you're playing. • The very best thing we can be doing is Didgeridoo, and it's perhaps the only thing this deck can do that's fast enough and powerful enough to matter anymore. Building out the Urza's Saga backup plan and cutting minotaurs is actually a bad idea. It may have been a reasonable approach one year ago, but not now. • I'd absolutely be playing 4x Boros Battleshaper; this is the minotaur that flips matchups entirely, and it's your way to fight back against Show and Tell or Eureka. It's also the only minotaur that totally ignores Karakas (although Sethron generates value). • Standstill is a 3-of. Four was the right number for a while, but not anymore. I'm actually really skeptical of Standstill right now; I've been sitting on another Hornstill donation decklist for four whole months now, unhappy with how it matches up against the metagame. • Chrome Mox looks worse here in part because the entire metagame has shifted to counter the other Chrome Mox/Ancient Tomb decks. Ancient Tomb is still nuts, but, with Standstill looking bad these days, the card disadvantage on Chrome Mox hits us hard. I'm starting to think 0-2 Chrome Mox and 3-4 Ancient Tomb is correct for the current metagame. • Related to Chrome Mox, another thing to consider is Sea Gate Restoration in the manabase. This pitches to Chrome Mox OR Force of Will. • Soul-Guide Lantern off Urza's Saga is probably too slow to reliably check the current graveyard decks, at least without also mulliganing to Force of Will. I'd rather put the graveyard hate in the sideboard, with my preferred Saga bullet probably being Grafdigger's Cage to also stop GSZ and Natural Order. • Retrofitter Foundry is primarily a way to beef up to the Urza's Saga construct plan, but the Urza's Saga construct plan is seeming anemic right now. • Otawara, Soaring City is a good candidate for a land slot. The original April 2022 decklist was actually submitted in January, before Neon Dynasty released! SIDEBOARD NOTES: • I am no longer a fan of Surgical Extraction as graveyard hate. As far as I'm aware, the current graveyard decks are playing 4-12 discard spells and/or Force of Will and/or Daze. I've been feeling that only Leyline of the Void can get the job done. • Fiery Confluence is a card I've been toying with. Fury is another option: pitchcasting it is tough, but it allows us to stabilize immediately before a Standstill. Kozilek's Return is a good option, but not dealing 3 in a format with Dragon's Rage Channeler is concerning. I've seen Rolling Earthquake do some work in other contexts, so that's another option. • 1:09:39 Alpine Moon was the mirror-breaker for popular Urza's Saga matchups that would threaten to safely operate under Standstill! You know what Alpine Moon also does? Shuts down a lot of angles from Lands/GW Depths, like Wasteland or Thespian's Stage or Dark Depths. It'd sure be a shame if you FORGOT TO BOARD IT IN. 🤣 It's probably not the ideal card right now anyways, but still. It pains me to say this about my favorite Legacy deck, but my assessment is that, because Standstill is weak right now, Hornstill is currently just a worse execution of the general gameplan of Cephalid Breakfast or Blue Painter. 😢 Sure, we can execute our combo without casting a single spell, but that's just not a major advantage right now.
What I like about this creature deck is that very few meta decks have much removal to deal with all these minotaurs, and you don't need to worry too much about counter magic.
I hope to see this deck again sometime on this channel. Its such a cool and weird strategy. I love playing/watching top decks in legacy but sometimes you want to see the less known decks do their thing :P
I think Currency Converter would fit the deck better than Retrofitter Foundry. There's often cards in hand you'd be happy to loot away, and making treasures can help you ramp up to the minotaurs and even fix the color for Battleshaper. Also, leaves behind nonartifact (rather than artifacts) creatures to help mitigate the opposing artifact hate (such as Meltdown).

I’m a huge fan of Hornstill, but that was a rough league. You rarely drew Didgeridoo, and you played against enough Wastelands that Urza’s Saga was barely functioning at all. Getting outmuscled by goblins was honestly baffling, though I think Hydroblast to save Moraug might have been correct.

I think end of turn dress down to pop your stand still and you don't have to discard is a strong indicator of dreadnought stuff -- as soon as it went on the stack i was thinking 1 or 2 dreadnoughts?
EoT is usually the right time to pop a Standstill. Dress Down is a strong indicator of Dreadnought, though any control deck that plays the card would have made the same play to clear space for a planeswalker or something too.

"Mana Ability" isn't just anything that makes mana, it's a technical term for a very specific type of ability that doesn't use the stack, and can be used in the middle of playing other spells and abilities in order to pay for costs. Neheb's trigger doesn't count.
As much as I love the card, I don't think Shark Typhoon fits this deck. It makes sense in normal Standstill decks as a finisher, but this deck is playing 12 minotaurs - do we really need more threats? We don't need sharks when things are going according to plan, and we don't want them when things have gone off the rails and we need to get back into the game. What you really need is a tempo-efficient way to remove cheap threats that can get in under Standstill. I'm thinking -2 Sharks, -1 Retrofitter (same problem as sharks), -1 chrome mox, +4 Fury/Bolt. Or maybe even splash for Swords or Push. Leaves 17 blue cards for Force which is on the low end but still acceptable. Also, I think you were too quick to keep 7 card hands with no Saga, no Didge, no t1 standstill... Despite Island Ponder Keep being the motto of this channel, I think this deck should be a bit more aggressive and mulligan at least once in search of our key cards.

Hornstill is just my favorite Legacy deck. Its so silly and fun. Definitely needs constant tweaking, def think Shadowspear is worth the single slot.
