I Think Mai Deserves Some Credit For Surviving Though Things She Had No Business Being Involved With (Like Marik's Shadow Games).
People always joke about her being a fan service character but she's actually a very deep character. Her fear of losing after losing to Marik is not unlike how real-life people experience ptsd.
Given how that duel went down...PTSD is completely understandable.

I think it also should be mentioned that she is canonically the best female duelist of her generation and the fourth best duelist of both men and women of her time. This is implied by the GX manga in which Jaden says that he wishes to become like the "Legendary Duelists" while a picture of Yugi, Kaiba, Joey and Mai shows up. This confirms that she's regarded as one of the four top duelists during the time of GX.
Mai is such an underrated duelist. She's got the heart and the skill to be a champion. 😉

I wish there was a continuation of Mai in later series arcs. Like maybe a relative or child of Mai, plus the Harpie archetype has evolved enough to make for a great character homage.
I'm glad she's getting the love that she deserved with her fans since they always said negative things about her. She's underappreciated she had some good moments and her quotes that r more realistic than teas friendship speeches.

Her arc in the Doma Arc was all because of Marik.

The show did her so dirty, she got no real redemption and was left out of the final season for what? She was the only strong female character and so supportive of everyone else especially the other girls in the show, it still upsets me how her story was pretty much forgotten

Battle City: mostly nonexistent until the finals where she serves as Jonouchi's/Joey's reason to Duel.
Doma Arc: She's the bad guy.

She is one of my favorites and my favorite of all the female Yugioh characters. She went through a lot of ups and downs with character development that affected her in both positive and negative ways, which is a lot more to say than how a lot of the female characters sadly were there just to mostly be the female duelist or protagonist's main girl sidekick. And Amazoness are one of my favorite deck types.
Of all characters in the Yugioh Series, she is the the greatest Charakter. I love her.
it didn't make sense to me that all of a sudden she feels alone in the world and that she's not strong enough as a duelist. It would have made much more sense if after she survives the shadow realm and discovers how real and terrifying magic is, her fears are instead linked to ever being on the receiving end of evil magic again. Then she accepts the seal of Oricalcos not because she's desperate to be a better duelist but because she wants magic of her own to protect herself and her friends even at the cost of the rest of the world. Then the rest of the season she spends as an antihero trying to get Joey to join her side rather than just go straight up evil. I think that that would be a better turn for her character. Then when Joey looses his soul instead of just regretting everything out of nowhere she realizes that Darts only let her THINK she could have used this power to protect her friends.
Season 4 was a joke overall. Better ignore it.

the anime did Mai so dirty, she nearly beat Yugi and Marik and they only won because of plot armor bullshit
- Mai drew a 4th Harpie and decided not to summon it for some reason just in time for Yugi to complete the ritual for Black Luster Soldier
- Mai decides to try and summon Ra for no reason when she has nearly 6k worth of damage on the field in the form of 3 cyber harpies, Mai's personal favourite card
- she beat Joey who was a legendary dragon holder and is one of the few people Kaiba actually praises for their dueling ability
But she's treated like a minor duelist by the show and she doesn't even join in when the Yugi's duel each other despite everything he did for her then she gets a 2 second scene watching Yugi duel Leon and a portrait as Pegasus has a monologue about Yugi's journey but they had the energy to put Duke Devlin there
mai's problem is that she's basically the yamcha of yugioh where almost all of her wins happen "off screen" and the duels we actually do see she loses to the likes of joey, tea, yugi, marik, joey again and gets beaten off screen by raphael & panik.
1:54 she offers Rex a kiss in the English dub, but in the Japanese dub she actually offers him sex. Also, from Battle City onwards she added the trap card Mirror Wall to her deck as well.

Mai deserves more respect than what she got. If it hadn't been for her, things might've been different for Joey & Yugi. With modern cards like Harpy Queen & Harpy Channler, her deck might be competitive.

That'd be cool and then Serenity would ask her during a training exercise if Mai likes Joey, citing how close they are and saying that Joey spoke very highly of her and Mai would say something along the lines of "Look at it this way Serenity; there are many, many men in this world that I despise with all my heart and soul, but there are also a select few men that I'd gladly risk my life for... and your brother is one of them"
Considering how Takahashi made the show; that'd literally be as close to a confession that we'd ever get lol

I always loved Main because she felt like an actual person. She had loneliness and insecurity buried underneath her hedonist tendencies. It's sad that despite being an incredible duelist and honestly the first character with an archetype theme, she was a victim of dueling the protagonists and main enemies.
The dragon arc was honestly shaky, but I feel it did do Mai justice. Trauma doesnt get erased overnight and she was tortured by Marik. It made sense that she faced darkness on her path to find herself. I would have loved to see her duel against Raphael even though she lost!
Lots of the main girls are competent duelists that get shafted for the boys, but I always felt that while Mai was underutilized, she was a solid character! Harpies are to this day one of my all time favorite archetypes.
Just found out that the voice actress who voiced Mai Valentine also voiced my favorite female anime character Rangiku Matsumoto from Bleach. How cool.

But after duelist kingdom like alexis does she'll do anything just to have a one on one conversation with their lover. But i think what's funny is out of all the male characters in yugioh only joey yusei and jack are the only ones who actually knows that someone has a crush on them so they try to keep them close.

Instead of losing to Rafael, Mai should have lost to Dartz. Dartz should have told Mai that the power of the Orichalcos is not free and that it comes at a price. He may have given Mai the power of the Orichalcos, but she also had to give Dartz something in return. Dartz should have told Mai that giving him Joey's soul is the price she paid for the power that she thought that she so desperately wanted, and that she does not get a refund.
