    The Earthworks sound way better on the toms. The Audix for everything else... the snare is almost a toss up, but leaning toward the Audix on that too.

    Probably fair to mention that the Earthworks set is triple the price of the Audix set. And it does not sound 3x better. Audix D6 bass drum mic beats them all in my ears. The Eartworks tom mics are clearer. The snare mic for me goes to the Audix as well: gives more body to the sound. The Eartworks gave a shallower, thinner sound with more high end.

    Earthworks everything, except the kick mic. Kick I'd go Audix. And possibly snare, depending on the vibe I'm looking for. Great video man.

      Yea man, I’m interested to try their KickPad out and see how that works in comparison to the D6 though.

      I have SR25 with KickPad and i compared it to other kick mics. The Kickpad will change almost all your mics to kick mics with pre-eq sound. I tried SM57 for the kick (w/Kickpad) and even that sounded like kick mic should. But i don't think SR25 is particularly good for kick because it's so sensitive for the air coming from the hole. Earthworks SR25 really works for overhead miking and I even did a similar video as yours overhead placement video but with SR25 mics. Great channel Austin and Tim also!!

      Tim Buell audix kickdrums comes pre eq the earthworks is more natural sounding, i prefer the earthworks because on the mixing you can add eq or comoression to the raw signal and it wont mess the sound

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly don't know why everybody love's the D6 so much. I guess I could see it being good if you had to mic a really shit kick drum or had no way to do any eq yourself or the venue had a crappy eq. Otherwise in a studio, when you have the ability to eq, why would you want to start with a giant smiley face:)? Like I get it, I do, just not my thing!

    For the price and sound it seems like the perfect blend for me would be audix for the toms and kick and earthworks for the snare and overhead. I already have dp7s on my kit and can get away with some subtleties with mixing through my 2222 but it would be nice to have that clearer sound overhead. We need more content like this on TH-cam !!!!

    Well-made comparison, thank you! I own the Dp7 kit myself (haven't been able to really use it yet due to not having a practice space...), so this comparison was really helpful for me.
    A couple of things to note, though.
    1) The Audix kit is really meant for live situations, considering the D2 and D4 have hypercardioid pattern and are dynamic mics. Naturally a set of condensators beat them in clarity and naturalism. In addition, the Audix set excels at more "intense" music styles than what we're used to hearing from you, so there's that. Doesn't make the comparison any worse, though!
    2) The Audix set has very bad-quality overhead mics: they're pretty much their second-to-worst ones. Naturally you're meant to get a better sound with better-quality mics.
    Overall I think there's something to learn here. Neutral, natural-sounding condensators are nice for studio, while the pre-eq'd Audix mics are great when starting out and for live situations, so that you can dial in a decent sound without considerable effort.

    • @transcendmeta
      @transcendmeta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. The Micro D condesers from Audix sound almost exactly like the EWs on toms. Theres a vid comparing them directly to the Audix d2s and d4s and its like a night and day difference how condesers open up the sound.

    Austin thank you for the review, so appreciate it. I was interested in picking up the Earthworks DK7 and was glad I came upon this review. Like you, I have been using the Audix DP7 for quite some time. I agree with your thoughts on the sound difference between the mic packs. Where I don't agree in many of the reviews is that the price difference justification of the Earthworks versus Audix. For me, spending $1,850 more for the Earthworks mics is not enough of a sound difference between the two mic packs. Curious if price should be a consideration. Thanks again Austin!

  • @robburgess4556
    @robburgess4556 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Interesting.
    You can really hear the EQ on the Audix kick mic. I'm not a fan of pre-EQ'd kick mics though so that's a minus for me.
    The Audix snare mic surprised me, I liked the sound when it was soloed. It seemed to bring out more of the snares. Once we went to full kit the advantage seemed to disappear.
    The toms and overheads were clearly the Earthworks, the Audix didn't quite match up.
    That said, in a normal situation, the Audix mics would be fine. The differences only matter if you have both available.
    For $2,000US less, the Audix will be the choice for many. Hell, I'd use the Audix happily if I had them.

  • @tam_ryan1036

    Thanks so much for this direct comparison, it's really useful as I was considering purchasing the DK7. However, assuming all mics are flat eq through the exact same system the result is clear for me. Sounds like this is a personal preference thing but although the Ewrx oheads sound cleaner to me, the Audix close mics win hands down for fullness and clarity. The Audix tom tones are open, clean and revealing whereas the Ewrx are limited and one dimensional. The Audix snare mic gives a much wider frequency response, revealing the whole drum tone rather than just the ping off the head. The Audix kick mic is far more punchy the the Ewrx and far cleaner. Takes all sorts, I guess. And thanks again. :-)

  • @DwkI
    @DwkI 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Austin,
    you played only one volume level (mezzoforte) during the test and my experiences are that microfones behave different at different volume levels => Especially on very high levels, some mics seem to be overcharged. The earthworks have small capsules so theys might get in trouble there.
    For this review, I agree with your conclusions.
    When money doesn't matter, I would prefer the Neumann KM 184 for overhead and highhat.
    As for me I'm very happy with the sound of my audix microphones together with my Ludwig super classic.

    I generally agree with your assessment. I prefer the Earthworks mics to the Audix mics with the exception of the kick mic. The Audix D6 six definitely has that pre-eq'd sound that makes it much more mix ready. It would be interesting to hear the difference with the "Kick Pad." I own two Audix i5s has alternatives to the good old Shure SM57, but in comparison to the Earthworks DM-20, it sounds so nasally, and it lacks that low mid energy that the Earthworks captures.
    Thanks for the great comparison!

    Austin, you're right. The Earthworks are way smother and natural sounding - but also way more expensive :-)
    Espacialy the overheads - they sound fantastic.
    For the close mics - this is hard to compare, because in an direct A / B comp, the condensers always sound more open and clear in comparison to dynamic mics. Anyway - the Audix still sound great. But the Earthworks are fabolous.

  • @pseudonomous
    @pseudonomous 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can barely hear any difference between the overheads, particularly for the right ride-cymbal groove, I can hear a bit more difference on the tom groove. Close mics sound clearly different and you can clearly tell the difference. I agree that the Audix bass drum mic sounds much better for rock and pop, though you might prefer the Earthworks mic for something like jazz; it's not really fair to omit the kickpad; it was clearly meant to be used.
    The difference is what you'd expect if you're familiar with how dynamic microphones such as the Audix close mics vs. small diaphragm condenser microphones (all of the Earthworks microphones). I like how the Earthworks kit sounds and I think that the close mics work very well in conjunction with the overhead set because the response of the close mics is so close to the overheads; the bleed from the close mics will mix in well and you get dynamic control in mixing without coloring the sound as much by turning close mics up and down.
    I think it would've been nice to hear the full kit mixed, but without effects. I'll bet the Earthworks set sounded much better than the Audix set. I guess the Audix set probably benefits a lot from EQ, compression, and maybe some reverb, while the Earthworks set probably sounds pretty good without any processing, in fact maybe even better without much processing in my personal taste.

  • @EGOS42
    @EGOS42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your analysis is exactly on point. Personally I think I prefer the Audix overheads when you didn't. That said I'm hearing the compressed audio and it may not be as harsh or brittle as you put it. The Earthworks mics shine on the toms in particular

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also know from using the Audix mics the past few years that the overheads were always a little harsh when mixing. I've always had to pull down some of the high end on them a little bit. Hearing them beside the Earthworks just really highlighted it even more for me.

  • @DruGaTecH
    @DruGaTecH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Audix for me. Warmer compared to the Earthworks. And man that D6!
    Earthworks won on your snare tho. Although I have the i5.
    It's all down to what you're recording!

  • @weeschwee
    @weeschwee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the earthworks overheads. I think I would stick with audix on everything else though. I feel that the audix tom mics had more low-end. And i think subtractive eq to achieve clarity is easier than boosting the low-end. The earthworks kick sounds more natural, but the audix d6 is way closer to my preferred sound. Everything can change in the mix though.

    100% Earthworks on the toms and Snare. I read some comments saying you can hear snare wires better in the audix... that's a bad thing. That means the mic is going to accept a toooon more cymbal bleed. And besides you should be putting a mic on the snare bottom anyway ;) But yeah earthworks all the way! Definitely selling my D2's and i5.

    audix close mics are pre-eq’d and sound pretty good. though you’re tonally boxed in, the priced is really nice and should satisfy 90% of the drummers (rock/pop/metal etc). With the earthworks, you can shape it far more and expand your tonal palate. Jazz, classical, or just higher end mics for more professional tonal options. Bottom line: you can make a hit with either despite the snobby gearnuts saying otherwise. And it only makes sense for me to get the earthworks if you have really nice preamps, so budget matters.

  • @lylaznboi01
    @lylaznboi01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Earthworks seems nice and bright while Audix is on the darker side. I didn't like the sound of the kick from the Earthworks, but you can possibly combine it with the D6 to help enhance the sound. Earthworks can get a good sound with minimal EQing while Audix could use some more tweaking to match or enhance it.

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, the combo I've settled on is the D6 inside the kick and Earthworks outside the front head. It's working out pretty well so far.

    holy crap if ever i need to feel good about dropping 5kaud on the earthworks set i'll come here. It absolutely tears the audix set to shreds with the exception of the kick, however, the audix kick sound is sort of like a premixed sound which cannot be undone.

    The Earthworks ovhs and tom mics sure sounded better (or more detailed). But I guess Earthworks kit is mainly for studio use. I'm almost sure the DK7 will pick up more ambient noise when used in live applications? DP7 tries to eliminate any ambient noises, with the cost of the sound. I'd combine the DK7 with the audix kick mic in studio

    Raw mics, I actually preferred the Audix over the earthworks. Less work to get a “drum” sound out of them. Mixed, the Earthworks kick leaves a lot to be desired, but the overall mix is definitely better. For the average Joe though (which the Audix set is more appropriately priced for) the Audix is the winner. For a studio setting (and where budget allows), the Earthworks is the clear winner.

For the money, I don't think they are touchable. Earthworks mics are really nice, bu t at more than double the price for my needs, The Audix is king.

    Snare, kick, and toms is Audix for me. Overheads are tied, but I would automatically go with Audix because they are 1,000,000$ cheaper. Lol

    audix kick micro sounds better, because the micro has more punch.
    but in every other point the earthworks micros wins.
    insane how clear the sound is, from the eartworks.

    The audix sounds so comb filtered compared to earthworks. Wow.

      djentlover I don’t know what the audio lovers heard? No comparison, the audix all sound like they have towels on them compared to the earthworks

    Ambos suenan de calidad, pero si fuera a seleccionar me iría por los Audix (costó efectivo) los earthworks parece que viene con diamantes.

    Hey for a future study the greats video, check our Arthur Kam, particularly at the end of his playing for Aleksandra Denda's "In the dark." Really cool stuff, if you're interested.

    Audix overheads and bass (for rock at least) and earthworks close mics, for my tastes.

    Earthworks all the way along with the D6

    I'd go with AUDIX....there is no better....just taste...I think that Audix requires less work to get a clear drum image....I liked the overheads better in comparison to the Earthworks....the hyped high end helped the dark cymbals a lot....

    As mentioned in the comments the Earthworks are 3 times the price therefore Audix all the way! No brainer

    It sounds like there's a low-pass on the Audix mics.

    Audix is plenty good. Maybe a dw moon mic, matched up with a audix d6.

    Here's the catch: The Earthworks are clearer and more accurate in every way and their price reflects it. HOWEVER, the bassier toms on the audix mixed with the brighter overheads gave a very close overall sound on the toms to the earthworks once all mics were on. The D6 wins for modern music and the Earthworks for jazz. The snare is a toss up. The final sound of each is too close to justify the Earthworks price for me.
