4-ΑΩ TIN GOD! WHEELS UP BURNOUT! CRAZY PASS! 100% ORIG! 120" SLINGSHOT DRAGSTER!

  • John Metler's 100% all original "4-ΑΩ Tin God" Jr. Fuel Dragster is a survivor that was put away in 1972, only to be resurrected some 40 years later! The 120" wheelbase dragster with a Hilborn Injected 301ci with original rear gear, along with the original '67 El Camino push car that was also stored until this year, made an appearance at the Hunnert Car Heads Up Inaugural Event at Byron Dragway 9-12-15. First and only pass, straight off the trailer, results in a chassis flexing, wheels off the ground burnout and an insane wheel hopping pass, harkening back to the 60's with a 9.93@143.09mph!

    I have to marvel at guys who are willing to sit their rear end over the rear end of the sling shot, and then uncork all that power into the final drive gear set. I did like/enjoy the video, especially when the thing hopped clear off of the ground on the start of the burn out. Thanks.

    Even though the run was not very fast, it's still way more entertaining to watch than a modern front engine carbureted big block dragster. It'll be killer once the bugs are out and its dialed in.

    I give it to those early drivers of these rails. I have done some crazy things but sitting over the rear differential in a open rail with both tires at your side is just too much for me. Nice car. Prayers for nothing but safe runs for you.

    • @NeilLB7
      @NeilLB7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this car it appears your legs slide in under the axle. Which some slingshots were designed for. And that’s even worse. You now have the differential sitting directly in your lap with zero room to spare. I’d have never done it.

    I enjoyed your video, cool car! I also read the comments below and realize that youngsters today really don't have a clue. First of all, any concern about driving that 301" Small Block Chevy with maybe 350 hp, in a car weighing maybe 1400 lbs including driver, is totally unfounded. The cars that were blowing up transmissions, clutches and converters "back in the day" were blown Nitro burning beasts. There is no comparison between the two. The bumps downtrack do make for a pain in the ass ride. I put a well used ZZ4 crate engine (355 hp) on pump gas into my 186" car weighing 1435 lbs with me in it and it went 5.90 eighth mile. I added a small air compressor on top and it goes 4.80's with ease. There is no safer or cheaper way to go moderately fast and it's a lot of fun.

      In those days... you got together with your buddies and actually created something by the seat of your pants... you went up to the line with both your works and your ideas... A hot rod was a hot rod and no two of them were alike... you had to love that... Creativity was alive and well and the drag racing scene was a world onto itself. Most people don't know this but several of the Detroit exec's and engineers were quietly involved for the love and appreciation of it but kept a low profile simply because it would create a bad PR image as hot rodders were looked upon in the same way as motorcycle gangs... but they were in truth among the most creative people ever... those days are gone for good. I know... I was there... and I loved it...! Look up these names: Herman Mosser, Tommy Ivo, Don Garlits, George Montgomery. Learn.

    • @3Ddude101
      @3Ddude101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep. I remember when there were dozens of these slingshots lined up in the staging lanes. They ran them off two by two all day long. But no burnouts in those days. And no wrinkle walls, only hard case slicks. They just pulled up to the lights and stabbed it. Thick tire smoke halfway down the quarter and front wheels hangin' in the air sometimes the same distance. Now THAT was exciting drag racing.

Ran out of money and found a more affordable project and sold the chassis. Big mistake I should have never let it go. it was fitted with a sb chevy and the chassis was designed for a Hemi and it ended up burning to the ground in a shop fire, breaks my heart. You have a rare thing in a F.E.D. that short these days. Cherish it. I kept my Hemi and maybe someday ... ya never know....

      Buy an old vehicle and stick the Hemi in it. Dare to be different. Find an old '50's or '60's International. Nobody wants them. They're cheap. I've owned 18 in the last 41 years and twice have driven away in them for $200...each. One was a 1960 Metro van, the second a 1950 one ton pickup with a 9 and a half foot bed. Not a speck of rust or one single dent on that one! Still had the crank behind the seat for emergency starting. I'll sell you a rust free and straight 1959 1/2 ton with a sweet (stock) 152hp 264 inch six and 4 speed. I never drive it anymore. Maybe once every 3 years for dump runs. Located I So. Oregon.

      i'v located a 57 fairlane 2 dr hardtop that would make a great gasser with the Hemi and 8 port Hilborns stickin thru the hood and straight axled. even thought abot puttin a mopar blue m on the doors and n small print under it in parinthesis (Henry would just shit!) LMAO I can get it cheap and theres a donor 57 ranchero it has a title the fairlane doesnt , so perfect drag car. I can sell the Ranchero for more than I have to give for the pr.. The car is very solid and not been hit and has alot of good and new trim.
      So I have thought of some other options. even a 49 ford tow truck rat rod .
      or a 72 Dart swinger gasser. LOL If I had the money Id clone me a early A/FX car.
      I havent gave up on the old elephant just yet.
      But my 69 Barracuda commands all the money for toys and attention. Her name is Wanda. you know Jamie Lee Curtis movie about 30 yrs,ago "A Fish Called Wanda". Take care man.

    One of my dreams before I shuffle off this mortal coil is to at least sit in an AA/FD while it's running at a "cackle fest" if not actually drive one. My physical condition might make ingress & egress a tad difficult but damn it'd be well worth it.
