I was there that day, On the USS Wainwright in Charlie Group, and it was a very interesting day. As you heard, a fast attack boat, the Joshan fired a missile at Charlie Group. The truth is, they fired it directly at our ship. It wasn't destroyed by our countermeasures, but flew through them, a cloud our aluminum pieces called chaff. It is very similar to what the A-6s used to through off missiles fired at them. The Harpoon missile missed us by about 100 Feet. It sounds like a mile until you find out our ship was nearly 550 feet long. The Soviet destroyer was not a surprise. They were sailing around the Gulf the entire time. The surprise was simply that they barreled into the battle zone at such high speed that it was thought it was one of the Iranian ships. Now for the surreal part of all of this. The Joshan had fired an American built Harpoon missile at us. The F-4 planes we shot the wing off of was also American built.
Was there in the beginning of Operation Earnest Will with the 7th fleet. Operation Nimble Archer happened while we were there. Saw a few tankers being towed by sea going tugs. Couple A6s disappeared and a helo went down. I remember manning the rails with dc lights looking for the pilots and crew. A lot of debris. Didn't find anyone. The American public has no idea what goes on at sea.

I was there. The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. I was an Electronics Warfare Technician 2nd Class on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. The night before, our Captain told us to get some sleep. We were going to general quarters at 0730. At 0800 our SAG would destroy the Sassan Oil Platform, SAG C would take out the Sirri oil platform, and SAG D would take our a frigate. We went to GQ at 0730. We radioed the platform at 0745, stating "You have 15 minutes to evacuate the platform." then stated it in Farsi, then English, then Farsi, finally saying, "Have A Nice Day." (we had a CT onboard that spoke Farsi) We then gave them a 10 minute warning, then a 5-minute warning. At 0800 we radioed, "Has everyone left the platform, we are prepared to open fire," to which the platform responded, "We are not leaving." So, we were like, "OK" and started firing at the platform with our 5-inch guns. We had fired 2 rounds when they started shooting back with their 22-mm chain gun. Our Fire Controlman adjusted fire and took him out with ONE shot (yes, he was THAT good). Then he readjusted fire and continued with the anti-personnel air bursts (we were trying NOT to hit a toxic tank on the platform. We were supposed to trade off with the Lynde B. McCormick but her gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform. So I was actually there. I was on the USS Merrill. I worked down in the engine room so it’s not like I saw the whole action but it gives a little insight on what the Navy can do. Given the chance.
2:18 - that is one of the best navy commercials ever. You know you're an American if you see that commercial and get a "F yeah" feeling while you bob your head.
One of the primary missions of the United States Navy is to support and defend "Freedom of Navigation", which is to protect safe passenger travel and commercial shipping internationally. Part of the reason for the international shipping protection by the Navy is due to the fact that America started out as a remote colony of England, which made it very dependent on oceanic shipping for supplies and luxuries until it was able to reach a state of self-sufficiency in almost all things. Once America reached that point, international shipping was a major factor in America's economy. When Iran placed magnetic mines in the crowded shipping lanes of the Persian gulf, those mines had absolutely no way to know what country a ship belonged to when it detonated. Only Iran knew with any degree of certainty where it has placed its mines, which meant that unless Iran told them the specific areas to avoid, nobody could be sure of having a safe passage through that area. In the attempt to attack specific shipping belonging to Iraq and Kuwait, they endangered all the ships using the Persian Gulf. With regard to 'proportional response', a proportion does not have to be one-to-one. If the President, Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Navy and everyone else involved decided to make the response punitive, (which clearly they did) they could decide that the response could require fifty-to-one payback for the damage to American and Kuwaiti shipping, as well as the ecological damage caused by destroyed oil tankers.
The reason Iran mined international waters is because that was where these oil tankers were sailing. The idea was to sink as many as they could. It just happens that the US set up convoys with warships to deter Iran's navy and air force from attacking, so they dropped sea mines instead. Unfortunately someone didn't think everything through that a warship might hit one and if there's one thing the US doesn't like is when you touch their boats. Japan got to experience the sun twice because they touched the boats. Also of note there is no way the crew of the Roberts was gonna let their ship sink. The original Samuel B Roberts took part in the fight of Leyte against the Japanese in WWII where a handful of jeep carriers and destroyers/destroyer escorts against the Japanese Center Force, the most powerful fleet Japan had ever floated. The Roberts was a smaller destroyer escort that fought alongside the destroyers and stood toe to toe against Japanese cruisers and battleships raking them with 5 inch shells, starting fires, anything they could till they were finally hit and sunk. They depleted most of their ammunition and the breach of one of the 5 inch guns got so hot it detonated a shell that was being loaded. When rescuers got to the turret they found the one man left alive trying to load the last shell and asking for help to do it despite the gun being destroyed.
I actually appreciate the pauses to share your thoughts and insight. As an American I’m always interested in knowing what people outside of my country think, believe, know, etc 🙌🏼

After the engagement we had a joke: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet... Glass Bottomed boat.
The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was gathering intel.
I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.
A few minor details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right... It depends on the perspective of the person telling the story.
That smoke detector beep at 21:10 had me weak!
Loved your reaction
Don't know if you were born here in the US or emigrated but WELCOME, either way. A lovely family.

“We gotta stop killing things!” 😂
You guys get it!! Thank you!
“Proportional” is great, “potential” is even better 😂
We were a part of operation Nimble Archer which happened in October 87. The overall mission was Operation Earnest Will, July 87 to 88. I was there with the 7th fleet July 87 to February 88.
Hi 👋🏾.
Army vet here, Fat Electrician is gonna teach you many fun things about my former organization.
Lessons like: Don't become the "work". Also what the word "steal" actually means. So tune in and enjoy all the hijinks from American military history.
Nick is a master storyteller. Check out his video about "America's War Horse" Reckless.
I really enjoyed and appreciated your reaction to this video, big fan of the fat electrician and his videos and love seeing reactions to his videos.
Your comment at the end was spot on even if that Iranian ship did hit one of our ships there were 3 ships per group and 3 groups so 9 American combat ships plus the uss enterprise aircraft carrier there was no way that Iranian ship and it’s crew were going to survive the day
Don't touch our boats....LOL
I search reactions to this video, it's fun to see how people react when they see what the U.S. Navy is capable of when properly motivated.
USS O'Bannon is my favorite Fat Electrician video, but you'll want to watch them all.
Hahaha I love you guys. The fat electrician has a lot of great videos
Epic reaction!!
I love you guys welcome to America
2 videos to watch from The Fat Electrician: 2)American’s Airborne Anti- Hero Jake “McNasty” McNiece, And The Last War Chief - Joe Medicine Crow(Both Videos are from WW2).
Please react to his video “world war tree”!
Wow yall bring the whole family out for reactions huh? 😂 I like it .
Only thing about the A-6 is the pilots sit side by side not front and back. But Fat Electrician was Army so its understandable
Thank you for your reaction, I hope to see you folks again, and I would recommend the United States Dismantles a Pirate Nation by the Fat Electrician. It is basically the origin story of don't touch the American Boats.
On a side note, it is a hobby of mine to place accents, as I am a retired American Soldier and have been all over the world. No offense is meant by my question, and feel free to not answer if you want, but I was wondering where your accent is from, as I am unable to place it.
Great reaction
As a former Operations specialist of the US Navy, I can assure you that we didn't even come close to flexing our military. Operation Desert Storm happened just a few years later, and that was still, only a show of force.
GREAT REACTION!!!!!!!
Love your channel sending love from Florida
Thanks so much❤️
Hope you were not affected much by the storm ☹️☹️
Just found you! Subd❣️
Great reaction. Keep these going.
TFE is an amazing youtuber and probably the best historian on TH-cam, if not then the most entertaining.
Bless you.❤
Loved your work. 👍
Love watching you guys 💜💜💜
Charisma is when you know that you are the bigger guy and you don't hit the other side unless they are the ones who started the fight in the first place.
I love this video and the family watching. You should check out The Fat Electrician’s “America stole a German UBoat and stuck it in Chicago.
Where is your family from? The passion you and your family shows is amazing. I want to learn about your country.
FREEDOM, ITS ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ABOUT FREEDOM!!! 😂😂😂😂
The American military's definition of "proportional" is very different from other countries military.
For recording reactions purposes Adblock can be your friend. Just remember to shut it off and give it another watch through, these creators do receive support from them after all.
My Dad was in the Navy at the end of WWII. I don't ever want us to be bullies, but don't screw with us. Never, ever underestimate the US. We also have a hell of a sense of humor😅. I have a feeling that we, as US citizens, don't even know the capability of our military. Great job guys!🇺🇲
Have a look at Wrecking & Trolling The Germans With A Wooden Plane - DH ... and The Real Tank Genius Of WW2 - Percy "Hobo" Hobart.Thank you all and stay safe.
Well met great video keep it up
My cousin served on Roberts last crew before it went to the 2nd largest navy in the world, our naval museum.

Your family is great, hope to see more of you
The modern SAMUEL B. ROBERTS ship is named for THE COURAGEOUS CREW & THEIR SHIP = U.S.S. Roberts having fought until destroyed in a Battle in the LEYTE STRAIGHTS, Philippines, WW2 against ships MANY TIMES their size and number .... as they were an American support group = TAFFY 3 - against The Center Force Fleet with the BIGGEST BATTLE SHIP ever built - The YAMATO .... The Pride (short lived) of the Japanese Navy. Just for the record - Greatest sacrifices of ships ever. GBjj
Great reaction y'all. Reacting to war stuff is hard, n it's even harder to enjoy watching.
On another note, who's the pretty girl in the middle?
I like her 😊 🤣
I enjoyed your channel 😊I subscribed❤
He should have let Reagan finish his comment. He goes on to say those are the 9 most terrifying words in the English language.
