  • Two Northumbrian/Scottish Borders tunes, the first the border ballad "The Battle of Otterburn" by June Tabor from her album "An Echo of Hooves" and a tune on the Borthumbrian smallpipes by Kathryn Tickell titled "Our Kate" set alongside a variety of images inspired by the Border Reiver. Best viewed full-screen and in 1080p.

      Before there was a Scotland, Northumbria was part of the Kingdom of Dal Riata.

      @@missnorthumbria3658 My Mom's family was here before the Revolutionary War, I know some came from Scotland but things get lost over the centuries and my family chased the frontier till they were looking at the Pacific Ocean.

    Is this a modern rendition of a genuine old Border Reiver song or is it a modern composition?

      It's probably a real Border song. The earliest known copy comes around 1550 (and it was probably written earlier), if Wikipedia is to be believed on this, and the Border Reiver era ended in 1600.

    My mother side is Thompson's. They spelled it originally without the P in the spelling. I don't know for sure if they were a border family or not. I've always felt connected to the border area and music.

      I know this comment is from a while ago but the border reiver clan Thompson was spelled both ways, but more common with the p!
