- An auto driver can't bear that tourist cannot speak his language. The video of this incident was caught on camera and has been circulating on the internet. It shows, a driver caught up in a spar with tourists for not speaking in Kannada and getting furious about 'why should he speak in Hindi'. He said 'this is our land...not yours'. I can understand the frustration of Kannadigas on this issue. Many people in India, despite living for a sufficiently long time, in a non-native place of theirs, never tend to adapt to the local languages or culture. The same people, when they go abroad would leave no stones unturned to learn their local language though. This is their double standards. People at both ends are flawed. Truth is, such cases are normal and media seems to be unnecessarily promoting these incidences, which simply widens the already present differences amongst people.
That's called north Indian hypocrisy influenced by invaders from west & central Asia, that needs to be fixed. Only South & East Indians together can make North India, Bharatiya again culturally & linguistically. It's time to detach north India from Iran Pakistan culturally & linguistically.

In my experience, I’ve rather found those from Eastern parts (be it WB, Assam) to be more stubborn with their language. I’ve seen some living in B’lore for more than 10-15 years, but still haven’t learnt how to speak Kannada. Contrary, to that I’ve found North Indians, who’ve adapted with the local culture over there, pretty well. Truth is, there exists such sentimental conservative people in all places. Go to Europe. People over there won’t even utter a word in English, despite knowing it well. But, media just unnecessarily highlights these issues, which unfortunately causes more divide amongst the people.

The more people from different societies and communities will mingle, and as generations will pass, these type of divisive attitudes will become a thing of the past. People will be compelled to find a common ground to keep up with the global order. After all, it is all about unity. You fail to keep that unity alive, then you loose even what you had.

I live in Banglore. Always I always ask the cab or auto drivers if they know Telugu, Hindi or English. If they say no then i try to communicate in my little known broken Kannada. Never I faced any issues in 3 years of living here. Always seen them to be humble and polite though the auto drivers charge extremely 😁

In , Bangalore, most of the auto drivers ,cab drivers, come from north Karnataka region or from Mandya or old Mysore regions. These people know kannada only. But ,some can speak little English or Hindi. So it's not obligatory on them to learn those languages.
But , most of the north Indians, don't learn or try to learn kannada , even after staying in Karnataka for 15 -20 years.They employ, hindi speaking housemaids available in plenty ( mostly Bengalis & Nepalis). When we ask them to learn kannada, they arrogantly say that there is no no need.
This attitude of some people, irritates the locals sometimes.

absolutely true and valid. People from other regions should try to respect the local language and try to have at least the working knowledge within a reasonable time. In Bombay, the lower-level locals dont respond if you don't talk to them either in Hindi or marathi. When South Indians visit other neighbouring states they try to communicate in local language. Let say I speak Telugu and when I visit Karnataka or Tamilnadu I don't ask them to speak in Telugu I try to communicate with them in kannada/Tamil. Also when I visit north states I try to communicate in hindi. Do you ask English men to speak Hindi when you travel to Europe? Then why are they forcing others to speak Hindi when they travel non Hindi speaking state.

The anchor herself is taking an untenable position: obviously, the driver was annoyed when the ladies said, "why should we speak to you in Kannada?" They should, because they are in Bengaluru. @@jsv2778 Actually they do if they LIVE in each others state. There are many Tamils living in Mysore who speak Kannada. Telugu people live in all south Indian states and speak all the main languages. In Tamil Nadu they have assimilated to such a degree, that they have become Tamils almost.
There are Tamils who live in Kerala who speak Malayalam. Kannada people who live close to the TN border can speak Tamil.

I learnt in vernacular language in my childhood that is Marathi. This Marathi school was in Karnataka in Belgavi. And you will be surprised the Hindi language (not Kannada) was a compulsory subject for us. Kannada became compulsory at a later date. If Hindi is made compulsory in South States, then the Hindi speaking States should have had one south language compulsory subject for them. They can choose whichever language they want to learn, but one all Hindi States should learn song South Indian language THAT IS REAL NATIONAL INTEGRATION. First there is no any Hindi states in India, Even UP, Bihar, MP etc have their own language, so if you're comfortable in Hindi you wouldn't understand their local language, so don't use Hindi States word, it's your weakness that you're not comfortable with the language, which majority population of India understand

Me and my friend had an awful and similar experience in Hyderabad as we are from Andhra Pradesh.Some Telangana people confronted us when we are returning from our work place and asked us whether we are from Andhra and Telangana.When we replied to them we belong to Andhra pradesh then they abused us "Andhralanjakodukulu".Dwellers of Hyderabad oldcity doesnt even know basics of Telugu.why nobody is questioning them?

That is why whenever I travel to the southern states, I try to mug up basic conversational starter words like greetings, asking for help, or taking a ride. And I always ask humbly whether they're comfortable to converse in English or Hindi before starting a conversation. One should adapt and learn the local ways while staying in a new place to blend in.
If she has told him she doesn't know kannada I think the auto driver would not have told her to speak in kannada And one should learn to be a Roman in Rome

I see lots of support for the auto driver. I'm a Bengali and I've experienced similar hostility in South Indian cities. In Kolkata, I have seen so many visitors from the South communicate with us in Hindi. Should we henceforth insist that they communicate with us only in Bengali? There are innumerable languages spoken in India. Should it be made compulsory to learn the language of a particular region before visiting it? Will that be practically possible?
