USS steel, Gary, Indiana. Great business or just another ruin?

- In this video I'm going to take you for a ride through one of the largest steel plants in the US, the USS in Gary Indiana, a true behemoth in the steel industry, but a dying one.

My name is Vlad and I am a truck driver.
I've been doing this for 8 years and often on the road I come across beautiful places, scenic highways, mesmerizing sunsets or sunrises, rare or unusual weather conditions and other things that make me hold my breath.
For long I've been thinking of a way to share my experiences with other people and now thanks to TH-cam that is possible.
I hope you will enjoy driving along with me on some of the most beautiful stretches of roads in the United States.

Grant Street clearance is 12'7" otherwise, like you, trucks must take the Clark St entrance. Not a fun route, but it's not because of USS. That bridge clearance issue is because of Canadian National - Kirk Yard. It looks to be in decay, but the plant has been there for 115 years.
Yes a lot of rail roads have been built so long time ago that they didn't take clearances into consideration. I left my exhaust there once with a low roof :)

Probably spent a week of my life on just that stretch from Olympic steel down to the adult book store, either waiting on trains or idling through the craters. Sat 7 hours one night at one of the crossings when a train hit a coil truck, good times

I didn't realize how big US Steel is. It's literally another city, although I see nothing but a bunch of vacant warehouses and railroad tracks. If only the City could gain access to that lakefront area, Gary would prosper.
Gain access to the lakefront like the mill doesn't or never existed? If that's the case, the city of Gary would never have been created. Gary was built by this mill.
@@DsnRabble It's true that US Steel built Gary, but look at the state Gary is in. The mills aren't creating jobs, US Steel has less than 5,000 employees. All the rust belt Cities had Steel mills, but guess what they no longer exist. The United States is no longer in the industrial business were in a service industry.
@@88detour you're right, it isn't creating jobs. But it's maintaining a ton of jobs, not just for the USS employees, but all the supplemental businesses, contractors, and their employees. It's still the largest tax income for the city. And it still injects a TON of money into the local economy.
@@DsnRabble Apparently it's not enough, look at all vacant lots and abandoned buildings in downtown. The majority of Gary's High Schools are all closed now, because the City is not making enough taxes.Gary is a suburb of Chicago it shouldn't look like that
@Maestro Mac USS isn't to blame for Gary's demise. But simply closing the mill for beach access won't fix that either. Gary's government has been it's own worst enemy over the last 70 years.
I'm not a fan of the state of the city as it sits. Its sad to see such a flourishing city crumble from within. I was simply pointing out the irony of your original post. It would have been great if the lakefront would have been left as nature intended so we could all enjoy it to this day. But the fact of the matter is, there would never be a Gary to begin with if there wasn't the mill.
A last gasp at manufacturing in the US. So sad.
