the empty bottles were probably there for returns they probably came from kids picking them up around the neighborhood but it would be interesting to find out what happened to the gas station why it just was locked up and is still sitting like this since the 70s.....
People keep remarking on the lack of vandalism. It's not all that remarkable. I grew up in a town like this one-small, middle of nowhere, and the guy in the background is right. Even if kids wanted to go in there, they either know somebody who knows somebody who owns the building, or someone they know would drive by and call their parents. This building is definitely well-preserved and the stuff on the shelves is so cool, but I'm not shocked by the lack of graffiti and/or vandalism. That's just so much less common in small town America.

Product on the shelf is disintegrating but remarkably intact. That glass Coca Cola may still be there in 100 years. Talk about a collector's item. This is one that definitely needs more investigating. I miss pop bottles! Several of the Pepsis, Cokes, & Sprites on the floor were still unopened, and that Coke on the counter was an odd size, bigger than a regular bottle but pre-two-litre. A great find, Dan.
A-ha! When I was six, my mom helped me sponsor a backyard carnival for muscular dystrophy at a local park. There was a Coca-Cola factory near the river downtown, and they donated a case of coke for our event. For some reason, when I read your msg, it jogged that memory, which I had forgotten until now. Guess I had forgotten Coke once came in quarts as well, eh?

In 1967 I found an old house way back in the mountains of rockbridge county in VA. It was abandoned more than 20 years .it was as if they just walked out and never came back. The table still had dishes ,salt and pepper shakers still setting there. I still have some old national geographic magazines from 1920s. My mom told me later on that she knew the people who had lived there. That was really erie!!
Your level indicator is actually a sight glass with a little paddle wheel in ti that would spin when the gas was flowing. You could tell at a glance if the pump had stopped.
And when you lifted the nozzle you had to push that chrome button in to reset the pump's numbers to zero then lift the handle to start the pump, and every time a dollar clicked off the meter a bell inside the housing would ding.

Not only that, they used real sugar back then and now most all main soda pops have changed the recipe so its not even the same thing. Coke, Pepsi and especially Dr. Pepper all taste like crap now. I remember getting ice cold RC cola’s in the bottle out of the machine in the early 70’s and was to die for, now it all tastes like syrup.

It was the basement of a row home, but had a door leading out onto the street. Apparently, back in the 1950s, it had been a soda shop. The place was perfectly in tact, the counter still had the straw holders and napkins, there were place settings. There were still menus at the booths. Really, it looked like it was just closed for the day, but it was shut down sometime in the 1960s. It was amazing. Someone was caring for it, because there was no dust or anything, but you couldn't go in there. My mom said she used to frequent the place as a kid. It isn't there anymore, the house changed hands a few times and the last time we were there - sixteen years ago - someone had put a wood fence up so you couldn't see any of it. But that was the biggest time warp I'd ever peered into, and it was amazing.
I think what Dan speculates is a gas level indicator at time 1:10 is a gas flow indicator. I remember in the 70's gas pumps would have some kind of plastic coloured marbles or other indicator that would move around inside the glass globe to indicate that gas was flowing through the pump.
Cool!. That old Bennett gas pump is in pretty good condition. That round thing on the side is a "sight glass" which had a spinner inside it. It's purpose was so the customer could see the purity of the gasoline and that it was flowing properly under pressure. Gas pump collectors would love to get their hands on that Bennett pump.
Why would it be degenerate to leave things as they are? Why would it be preferable to destroy this little bit of history? Isn't it better to preserve than to exploit (for such little gain)? You must really dislike time capsules!

we used to go to an old gas station when i was little, if i remember correctly the bulb on the side was a light-it told you whether there was gas or not-my dad used to go to a texaco faithfully every week, until the owner died-i remember times when my dad pulled up to the pumps & the light wasn't on, so he knew they were empty, so we had to go somewhere else-this didn't happen too much, but it did happen in the sixties-thank you dan for the video & the memories of "old roy" the texaco owner

Quite a rare and amazing find! And so country too. I haven't seen a glass quart of Coke in SO long! We have a grocery store near where I live that completely remodeled. Unfortunately, it went 1970's 'flashback'. It really tricks the mind. I'm so uncomfortable in it, I can hardly shop there. I was a kid in the 70's, and something in me rebels at the thought of going back there again; but never fear, the prices at checkout are a good dose of modernity! This place doesn't have any of that feel to it. It seems almost 60's or older to me. It's a charming little place that has somehow survived pretty much intact. Yay!

Which grocery store is that, if I can ask? I've never really heard of one being remodeled to look like it was from the '70s, although I've spent time in a hotel that has a very retro '70s look (The Standard in West Hollywood; part of the lobby has shag carpeting on the floor, and more carpet on the wall and ceiling).
Saved this as a treat for myself at the end of the day. I love the crazy old stuff on the shelves! If it's anything like the little store my family went to, it was probably sitting there for a long time even before the place closed. "Oh hi, let me scrape the rust off this delicious can of peaches for you! Let me pick my nose before fishing you out some penny candy!"
I know this is an older video but I just so happened to come across it while watching some of Dan’s excellent videos on both of his channels. In regard to the old gas pump in the video, I know that they go for big bucks online to collectors of vintage automobile memorabilia. An old roached out pump like this is sought after and there are tons of people who restore them for their collection or to resell. Even all of the old items in that country store are worth some bucks to the right person. It’s amazing the types of things people collect.
hey Dan. On the video with the person buried in the yard. That cement top is called a Vault cover. They open a grave and place a open "vault" inside and then the coffin is placed inside and the super heavy lid put on top. It keeps the ground from caving in as you may see in very old cemeteries. Coffins without them have the earth collapse inward as the casket decomposes. that was so cool of a visit to see nearly everything as it was left.
I'm 58 and live in Yorktown, Virginia, so I must say seeing that type of gas pump again is a pretty cool feature. Don't worry about the products on the shelves though. The food from the 1970s had so many preservatives they would still be edible.
Oh the nostalgia in that shop is amazing! If only there was a way to get inside but then I'm sure if that were possible it would be in ruins...I hope no one ever damages it just so we can have it as some kind of preserved artifact.
As I remember it, the glass dome on the side of the pump was in line with the flow of the gasoline, and had three colored balls inside that would "bounce" around, proving that the attendant was, indeed, pumping gas into the car, the car's gas gauge notwithstanding.

The little round object that you thought was a level indicator was really just to let you know that the gas was flowing. It would push the gas around when it was turned of course and there was a plastic piece with oval shapes on it and that is what you would see.
holysl I've watched this video over and over again just so I could catch a glimpse of the other things on the shelf. I wish he could have panned the camera around so we'd seen more. The stuff Parkers grandpa was mentioning sounds so interesting. Listen to me complaining. I'm so very lucky to have stumbled upon +Dan Bell. I am grateful for whatever he puts out. I enjoy all of it.

A little bit of an update: As of 2020, the roof of the Gas station has partly collapsed as the 2 remaining pillars (Other 2 had collapsed) couldn't hold the roof anymore.
I remember paying 28 cents for a gallon of High test gas in the sixties for my 69 Dodge Coronet RT 440.. I also remember paying a nickle for a bottle of pop (Coke) in the late fifties in Big Rock Virginia. Daddy was a coal miner then. Thanks for these videos of old places.
A collector would pay thousands to get their hands on some of those items. Hell, I'd go nuts just being able to buy a 6 pack of empty coke bottles in the condition of those bottles!
The little glass "bubble" on the side of the gas pump was an indicator that gasoline was flowing. There is a ball in it that spun when the nozzle lever was activated.
Love those old places Dan. There is a little country store not far from me that was built in the 1880s and is still in business. Neat little place and they have a little place to grab a burger in there too
There are occupied houses nearby, and from the looks of it, this is a rural area where everybody knows everybody. It wouldn't be worth the risk getting caught.
that glass bubble looking thing on the gas pump is not a level indicator, it is actually a flow meter that uses a plastic pinwheel that was under there so the customer could watch the fuel flow through the pump and into his fuel tank. When I asked my dad about it as a kid, he told me it was just to attract attention. Some people back in the day didn't trust watching only the numbers roll, they had to see it flowing I guess.
Wow..one of the best. Be sure and get a six pack of "Sprite" in the GLASS 10 oz. Bottles..totally amazing. I wonder if there were any old packs of cigarettes in there. A collector's haven in this store!!
1:18 Those little glass side-bubbles on the pump contained a spinner that was driven by gasoline flowing through it. It was basically a window that showed that the pump was working properly and hadn't been tampered with.
I have a stranger story-many years ago, I was in Beverly hills LA. There was a small shop advertising a big sale-the guy sold high-end tennis wear-brands like FILA, ELESSE, etc.-only the clothes were all 25-30 years old.I could never understnad how he thought he could sell such old stuff-brand new, original tags-but OLD.
Jax beer from New Orleans? Wow, that brewery closed about 1978. They're steel cans, because they've rusted through. The Tom's peanuts have long since rotted away, but the plastic bags are still intact..ugh..

Not quite... the bell would ring every time a GALLON was pumped, not a dollar.

They've trained us to think glass is such a pollutant (when it just turns back into sand) and yet plastic is acceptable . :)
Google "Mexican Coke" - it's made with real cane sugar and comes in glass bottles.
They sell them here in NYC. You can taste the difference too.

*I don't know about 60's, a lot of the products in there are from the 80's and maybe a few from the 70's!!!! I know you could buy those quart bottles of Coke in the late 80's!!!*
Which grocery store is that, if I can ask? I've never really heard of one being remodeled to look like it was from the '70s, although I've spent time in a hotel that has a very retro '70s look (The Standard in West Hollywood; part of the lobby has shag carpeting on the floor, and more carpet on the wall and ceiling).
Saved this as a treat for myself at the end of the day. I love the crazy old stuff on the shelves! If it's anything like the little store my family went to, it was probably sitting there for a long time even before the place closed. "Oh hi, let me scrape the rust off this delicious can of peaches for you! Let me pick my nose before fishing you out some penny candy!"

I know this is an older video but I just so happened to come across it while watching some of Dan’s excellent videos on both of his channels. In regard to the old gas pump in the video, I know that they go for big bucks online to collectors of vintage automobile memorabilia. An old roached out pump like this is sought after and there are tons of people who restore them for their collection or to resell. Even all of the old items in that country store are worth some bucks to the right person. It’s amazing the types of things people collect.
hey Dan. On the video with the person buried in the yard. That cement top is called a Vault cover. They open a grave and place a open "vault" inside and then the coffin is placed inside and the super heavy lid put on top. It keeps the ground from caving in as you may see in very old cemeteries. Coffins without them have the earth collapse inward as the casket decomposes. that was so cool of a visit to see nearly everything as it was left.
Lux soap!!! That's what Ralphie liked the most when he got his soap in his mouth for saying "Fudge" in A Christmas Story. :)

I'm 58 and live in Yorktown, Virginia, so I must say seeing that type of gas pump again is a pretty cool feature. Don't worry about the products on the shelves though. The food from the 1970s had so many preservatives they would still be edible.

Oh the nostalgia in that shop is amazing! If only there was a way to get inside but then I'm sure if that were possible it would be in ruins...I hope no one ever damages it just so we can have it as some kind of preserved artifact.
As I remember it, the glass dome on the side of the pump was in line with the flow of the gasoline, and had three colored balls inside that would "bounce" around, proving that the attendant was, indeed, pumping gas into the car, the car's gas gauge notwithstanding.

Thanks Jerry Ball for the nice comment about my home county. 4 years have passed and there's still no real vandalism or graffiti around here. We have our share of issues but not those.
The little round object that you thought was a level indicator was really just to let you know that the gas was flowing. It would push the gas around when it was turned of course and there was a plastic piece with oval shapes on it and that is what you would see.
Too cool. I wanted to see more of it.

There are bars of bonami on the shelf. Wasn't that the soap in Ghost and Mr Chicken where even bonami couldn't remove the blood off the piano keys?

A little bit of an update: As of 2020, the roof of the Gas station has partly collapsed as the 2 remaining pillars (Other 2 had collapsed) couldn't hold the roof anymore.

I remember paying 28 cents for a gallon of High test gas in the sixties for my 69 Dodge Coronet RT 440.. I also remember paying a nickle for a bottle of pop (Coke) in the late fifties in Big Rock Virginia. Daddy was a coal miner then. Thanks for these videos of old places.

A collector would pay thousands to get their hands on some of those items. Hell, I'd go nuts just being able to buy a 6 pack of empty coke bottles in the condition of those bottles!

The little glass "bubble" on the side of the gas pump was an indicator that gasoline was flowing. There is a ball in it that spun when the nozzle lever was activated.
Those full bottles could be worth something.
Pop bottles, collecting and returning got us our treats.
Yep. And some of those bottles are unopened. I wonder what they taste like, lol.
Even more incredible is that no one bothered to break in and pick it clean.
Love those old places Dan. There is a little country store not far from me that was built in the 1880s and is still in business. Neat little place and they have a little place to grab a burger in there too

There are occupied houses nearby, and from the looks of it, this is a rural area where everybody knows everybody. It wouldn't be worth the risk getting caught.
Past there many times on our way to our friends home in Heathsville va. Glad it's still there! Not too far down the road are some great vacant homes

This is sooo COOL! There's actually a little convenience store in Medina, Tx that has the old gas pump with the rolling counter/numbers.
that glass bubble looking thing on the gas pump is not a level indicator, it is actually a flow meter that uses a plastic pinwheel that was under there so the customer could watch the fuel flow through the pump and into his fuel tank. When I asked my dad about it as a kid, he told me it was just to attract attention. Some people back in the day didn't trust watching only the numbers roll, they had to see it flowing I guess.
Wow..one of the best. Be sure and get a six pack of "Sprite" in the GLASS 10 oz. Bottles..totally amazing. I wonder if there were any old packs of cigarettes in there. A collector's haven in this store!!
1:18 Those little glass side-bubbles on the pump contained a spinner that was driven by gasoline flowing through it.
It was basically a window that showed that the pump was working properly and hadn't been tampered with.
I have a stranger story-many years ago, I was in Beverly hills LA. There was a small shop advertising a big sale-the guy sold high-end tennis wear-brands like FILA, ELESSE, etc.-only the clothes were all 25-30 years old.I could never understnad how he thought he could sell such old stuff-brand new, original tags-but OLD.

Jax beer from New Orleans? Wow, that brewery closed about 1978. They're steel cans, because they've rusted through. The Tom's peanuts have long since rotted away, but the plastic bags are still intact..ugh..

That glass bowl on the side of the gas pump was a flow indicator, they usually had 3balls inside and they would twirl around inside to let you know the gas was flowing through there to the hose n nozzle, we have a pump just like it on the farm n ranch
That bulb on the side of the gas pump has a ball in it and when fuel is flowing the ball goes around like crazy to let you know the gas is flowing
That gas had both acne medicine face wash, and laundry soap in it.... damn shame it's gone! Seemed like some scrumptious petrol for sure.
I know this EXACT spot and I'll be visiting it next visit down there. As you know Dan, it is off the beaten path.
