    Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a. In this video, I'll show you what my garden looks like at the beginning of August.
    Everything is blooming, I'm harvesting more than I can eat, and my garden maintenance is the longest it's every been. I love every minute of it.

    You’re an inspiration. I’m a new gardener in Western suburbs and I love container gardening. It amazes me how you can be in the city and have a beautiful lush outdoor space.

      That’s my favorite too! I always put the supertunia vista bubblegum in that same spot each year.

    Use the young leaves from your lemon tree to make tea! Lots of vitamin C and delicious.

      I’m definitely going to do that! I love the lemon balm tea so I’m sure I’ll love tea from the lemon leaves too!

    Breathtaking! I don’t know which one I love more, the red Sunflowers on each side of the cart or those gorgeous pink dahlias! I think I’m going to try those next summer. The grasshopper bait seems to be slowing them down a little, fingers crossed.

      I can’t recommend the Otto’s thrill dahlias more! They’ve bloomed constantly and much more often than the other varieties I’m growing.

    I really like the herb garden in the terracotta pots. You might make me switch mine from grow bags!

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the look of the terracotta but I do think some of my herbs would do better in grow bags, especially my lavender which I think would prefer it a bit drier!

    Now I'm adding asters to my seed wishlist! seeing the sweet alyssum everywhere makes me smile... I love it and diamond frost euphorbia as like a backdrop type plants, if that makes sense. I can't remember if you ever had thrips on your dahlias? Im dealing with that now 🤬. I'm assuming not bc they look too healthy

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t had thrips, or actually many pests at all, on my dahlias this year 🤞

    Try dwarf strawflowers, less height. And I saw given away shishito peppers from CBG

    I love your container garden. I always take notes when watching your videos. I'm getting so excited about doing this next year. I have a front and back porch. I'm sure you mentioned it, but I may have missed it, do you use all seeds for your garden?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m excited for you for next year! I typically do seeds for most of my flowers, or anything I’m less likely to find in store. I buy plants mostly for veggies since I usually have only one or two of each veggie plant so it’s not worth buying a whole seed packet for those.

    • @EM-mi5yj

      @@ChicagoGardener Thanks that makes a lot of sense.

    Can you do a video about spacing in container gardening? Or what is your general guidelines? How do you determine 1 plant per pot vs multiple in one pot?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great video idea! I’ll put something together. One thing I will say is I typically space things closer together than recommended to make it fit and so far I haven’t had much issue doing that.

    So gorgeous, I aspire to have a garden like yours one day! Have you gotten any blueberries yet from your blueberry bushes? Not the hanging basket varieties.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not yet, but they’re both still young. It can take about 3-4 years to get berries and both of mine are less than 2 years. You can buy older blueberry bushes though to get berries right away!

    Hi, I'm new here, looking for inspiration for rooftop gardens. I'm hoping the property managers will allow a small (shhh...for now) rooftop garden. So excited to see that you have both poppies and rhubarb growing in containers. Can you share where you get the raised beds? I'd like something similar, ideally on wheels. Thanks!

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My raised beds are from Gronomics. I ordered off the site but Home Depot and other retailers carry them too. I don’t think any come with wheels, but you can buy some an screw them onto the legs. I really wish I had done that before filling my beds.

    Your garden is so beautiful!! Where do you purchase your dwarf fruits, i.e. blueberry plants, raspberry and also, your supertunias - not sure if Home Depot carries these?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get supertunias from Home Depot! It’s the only place in Chicago I’ve found that Carrie’s them. My blueberries and raspberries are from stark bros and I ordered dwarf apple trees from Park Seed this spring. Spring Hill Nursery also Carrie’s dwarf fruit trees!

    How do you store your dahlias over winter?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep the grow bags in the garage over winter and water about once every 4-6 weeks. I’ll definitely make a video showing my process for this year!
