He's also given some decent characterization in just his introduction. The line "We just need to fight as we always have," suggests both a record of success and a conservatism of approach. He's set in his ways, but they've proven to be effective ways. He has grey hair, a cane, and walks with a little limp. This suggests not only is he old enough to have racked up a long record, he's also showing old wounds of battle (to his foot, leg, or hip) and that he won't let such wounds keep him off the field. Finally, the "You're the greatest warrior I've ever seen. I regret nothing!" suggests that he knows his unwillingness to diverge from his methods is what got him and his unit killed, but he doesn't care. He truly believed in himself and is at peace with what he's done and the death he's about to meet.

Hey, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Bioshock made some pretty effective story experiences based on the "I only know my commander as a voice on the radio" premise. Silent Bomber was a bit ahead of it's time in that regard. It's not necessarily executed well in this game's case, but the concept isn't an unworkable one.

Along with megaman x4, ff8, tekken 3, re2 and silent hill, silent bomber was one of the badass games that my much older brother had in our collection. I was lucky to have played this as a kid

Yeah, I remembered having so much fun with this game. Even recognized the Silent Bomber reference in the .hack games. Beating this game was probably one of my biggest gaming achievements as a kid, because I figured out that in the final boss fight against Benoit, the arena actually has no borders, so I just infinitely ran down the whole fight and jumped over whatever Benoit did, only stopping to plant a bomb on him, kind of like what Josh did. Kudos to Josh for actually having played the game, too!
I used to play the first level of this game on a demo disc over and over and over as a kid... I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this video. Thanks for taking me back!
I fondly remember getting my original PlayStation back in the Philippines in 1999. The country also had a pirated games market where you can get dirt cheap copies of any game of any localization. Needless to say, my parents got me a thirty-plus game collection, and Silent Bomber was part of it, specifically the original Japanese version. The graphical and gameplay design absolutely dazzled me at the time when I saw my dad messing around with the game for a bit. I tried it out for myself eventually, and oh what fun it was working through the Hiragana and Katakana. As you can tell, I love this game and have played it to death. With that said, I’d like to correct some info in this video and add a few of my own. In the Japanese version, you cannot skip the tutorial at all, whereas you can in the North American version. Also in the Japanese version, you are taken directly to the pause menu when you…well, pause the game. No need to press Start and THEN Select. There’s a pretty well-hidden mechanic in the game that is somewhat hinted at, which is the score multiplier. Basically, amassing a kill streak will result in the score being multiplied ranging from x2 all the way to x10. Each enemy yielded different score amounts, with the mission objectives yielding the most, so it was ideal to amass the multiplier from smaller foes before going after the big fish. The kill streak ends if Jutah takes a hit or after a three-second period. Speaking of scoring, the ranking system factors in speed, remaining health and kill streaks. If you’re fast, have taken no damage and have blown up plenty of hostiles, you’re guaranteed the highest rank. And the highest rank is actually S, not A. And each rank is separated by increments of 50000 points. For each increment you hit on your total, you go up a rank. So the challenge becomes reaching an S Rank in every mission, which is far from easy. Of course, poor performance, including using a Continue after dying in a mission, will reduce your total score and thus your rank. The incentive for reaching high ranks in every mission is unlocking Benoit and the Cat Tank in the 1v1 mode. You get Benoit for Straight A’s and the Tank for Straight S’s. 8:17 - I did read the manual back in the day, and I have a minor correction for you. As you noted, Jutah was created as a weapon as part of Hornet's military government to suppress a popular uprising. The uprising succeeded though and Hornet underwent a revolution, in which Jutah was arrested as a war criminal. However, *Jutah did not break out.* Rather, he and the other members of his little squad are almost all criminals on Hornet, each with their own reasons for imprisonment, save for the squad leader who's the only representative of Hornet's military (now under civilian control) and John who is a partisan who volunteered. They're sent as a kind of "Dirty Dozen"-type of force to try and exploit some IFF codes the Hornet government had gotten to board the Dante and conduct sabotage. They might not be able to destroy such a titanic ship itself, but they might be able to disrupt it and disable some of its systems, so that Hornet's fleet (backed up by a lot of mercenary ships) would have a better chance at stopping it. Oh, and when that guy does a creepy laugh about "Which player will be fortunate enough to checkmate fate," it's not *just* a cryptic comment out of left field. "Fate" is Jutah's surname; he's taunting Jutah (and using some pretty heavy-handed foreshadowing.) [EDIT]: This also explains Macino at 26:03. She too is a criminal and she thinks she found a way to escape, and she intends to coerce Jutah into helping her. At 40:21, while it's not a *complete* explanation, according to the manual Benoit is this kind of legendary rebel, but he's not picky about *whom* he's rebelling against. He'll find some cause people are fighting for, join the side looking to overturn whatever the current status quo is, then help them. Not only that, he will seemingly sincerely believe in whatever cause he joins, even if the ideology of that cause is completely opposite of an ideology of another cause he seemed to sincerely believe in. What he seems to want to do is to simply keep overturning the world, constantly, forever. He can't leave situations static, it's the chaos of revolution and change he seems to love. This is speculation on my part, but The Dante is this super-weapon of an interplanetary empire (they use it like the Death Star of Star Wars to threaten planetary destruction as a way of imposing their will,) and by taking it over and destroying it (even if that means crashing it into the planet it was sent to destroy) seems like one of the biggest things he can do to upset the power of that empire, and he's loving the thrill of it. It has to be one of the biggest scale revolutions he's been able to participate in.
I remember playing this in one of those old ps1 demo discs. For years I tried to find the game but never came close because I was a little kid and never got to know the name of it. Al I remembered was the white-haired protagonist.Thank you Josh, form the bottom of my heart. I can now sigh of relief
Haven’t played this game but the yellow suited nemesis reminds me so much of Teisel Bonne in megaman legends. You become nemesis’ with him simply due to you both looking for the motherload and you inherently stopping his plans. And every time you fight and beat him and his family, he has a “HOW?! HOOOOW?!?” Mentality. Also each fight has a bigger machine. To the point where one fight takes place in an “industrial district” of the first city where you fight a massive machine that crushes the buildings around you (aside from the first fight with them where it’s in a residential district and people’s home can actually be destroyed). What a great game
I requested this a long time ago in the hopes that you knew what is was, but I would never've thought you actually did! It's so nice to see one of the first video games I remember playing being featured here ❤ Thank you Josh.
Fun fact, Tail Concerto's intro theme, For Little Tail, was also Kokia's first song! Unfortunately I've never been able to find a good quality version of the original, but she did pretty good versions since. She provided vocals for a few little games later on, such as Demon's Souls, Ar tonelico Qoga, FF 13-2 and Dark Souls 3.
Funny that you bring up the demo disc. I've played and beaten Silent Bomber a couple times but I'm positive the most time I've spent with it was playing a Japanese demo on a Playstation Underground disc over and over for days when I was a kid. Other than *maybe* a PS1 Ghost in the Shell demo -- or a demo for Tail Concerto, funnily enough -- from a different OPM disc, it's probably the one demo I've played more than any in my life.
Between this and the Future Cop: LAPD Video - I’m convinced that you’re on a Mandela effect timeline with me and my brother where you’re one of the few people who actually played and enjoyed these classic games. Nobody ever seems to talk about them. Would love to see you cover Galerians at one point! Another amazing PS1 hidden gem with a really dark story and some really unique weird gameplay mechanics!
@@CasepbX Whenever I hear people talk about PS1 classics, it’s a load of different games though! I very rarely if ever hear people praise these ones. It’s so rare to find someone who has even played them before somehow.
I don't get it. If you mean the graphics design then ok but graphics quality? That really does not matter much. Looking pretty does not make a game good. Not to mention that that's the entire point, these games are *was* it any good. It would be stupid to do 'was it any good' on a modern game because Josh has no history or nostalgia to test in the first place. He tests games that he remembers fondly and he's old enough that he mostly has nostalgia for games that young people today would consider archaic. Seems like Josh doesn't matter the graphics much either considering how many games in this series he concludes to be good.
On the one hand, yeah the story is melodramatic and the ideas you had about gameplay choices would have helped a lot. On the other hand, they literally said in the first cutscene that they AREN'T a crack unit and that they're surprised that they're all Hornet could scramble together for this mission. There's a reason they needed a war criminal who got locked up after a training mission gone horribly wrong (for real how did our character get so badass? Did they keep training Jutah as a weapon in prison? Is he a super soldier?) Your impression is supposed to be that they're a bunch of dumb rookies but at least they've got heart or whatever and that's why Jutah the Great sticks his neck out for them. But maybe i just read too many manhua where you feel bad for how hard all the side characters have to work just to be worthy of shining MC's boots and have some sympathy bias lol
I remember playing the shit out of this on a demo disk and enjoying it. I just never could remember what the hell its name was. Thanks for bringing back this childhood nugget.
Oh my Holly Molly! I played this on a burned CD on my ps1 with 6 years old. I always loved the gameplay and the aesthetics. Never thought someone knows this game.
Genuinely squealed a little when I saw the title of this video. This game was frickin' amazing and I don't even care if Josh hates it. I love it. I still have my PS1 copy, even tho I can't play it on anything. Amazing game.
PS1 had an unlimited amount of good games, the greatest console to exist imo. I remember trying to S rank all the stages to unlock all the characters for verses mode.
I remember playing a demo of this when i was a child and loving it. Been thinking of it lately but forgot what was its name. Thanks for making a video about it Josh. i wish i've played the full version back in the day.
Yooo, you just unlocked some hiddens memories from the back of my brain with this video. I remember a friend had this game and i borrowed it several times but never got to beat it. Great video as usual!
Dude first Chrono Trigger, now this one. One by one you're reminding me of my childhood games and making me replay them after 25 years. I'm so glad you do. ps. I can't believe I managed to beat this game when I was 10!
I never played this game, but I thoroughly enjoy your content. I just popped in here to recommended a few games I would love to see you go through. Final Fantasy 6 (3 on the SNES), Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1), 7th Saga (SNES, and my favorite RPG of all time), Golden Eye (N64), and Perfect Dark (N64). These games, plus a few youv already made videos on, were my childhood. And you present things in a way I respect And adore. Thank you for your content 😊
The craziest thing for me is that this is the second time I hear Richard Cansino pop up, voicing Benoit. The first is The Bouncer where he voices Dauragon. The significance of this is that Richard Cansino is in Rurouni Kenshin, and he does a great job in that role.
Before watching the video, i want to say something. I never finished this game, i got stuck at the chess battle level. Still, i played a lot of this game, the versus mode was an unbalanced mess, but i had so much fun with my brother that it was worth turning it on regardless of my inability to beat it. Good times
The design of the game sort of makes me think that perhaps they wanted some sort of arcade-centric game, realized that game centers just aren't a thing overseas, then dolled it up a little bit for a home release. The 1-2 hour window is what many modern arcade games shoot for.
I miss games like this, not to imply new ones are bad, I just miss the unique mechanical emphasis a lot of old PS1 games had, I wish we could get more stuff like this nowadays from studios but at least we have the indie scene.
I was just watching Gaming Brits's video of Silent Bomber like a few days ago, thinking this had something to do with Bomberman. What timing! Edit: While on that quick-topic of forgotten PS1 games, I hope one day you'll be able to take a look at Koudelka.
Looking at Silent Bomber makes me think of how limitations breed creativity in art. A really cool usage of camera movement and creative gameplay that you'll likely only see in indie games today. An online fighting mode with the versus mode would be super cool.
Holy FUCK! This game is so good! I spent years trying to remember its name back in the ps1 emulation days and when I did i played it during the entire week! Great memories!
This is probably my favourite series on this site now. The deep dives into games I know and don't know have been great. Excited for the inevitable Gex dive.
This game was so good. My brother had it and I loved watching him playing. The last boss was so cruel and we could never find the last hidden collectable to unlock the last boss to play as. Great IP.

Oh my God the one I've been waiting for 😭 Literally never clicked a video so fast. So gassed for you to cover one of my favourite ever games. I played the absolute shit out of this when I was a kid, but never made it past the chess boss - I remember it being hard as nails! Can't wait to get stuck into this later ❤ Edit: Just finished - another fantastic video! Glad I wasn't the only one that struggled with that bloody chess battle. Surprised you didn't mention the soundtrack/sound design much - definitely one of the most memorable aspects of the game to me!

Hey man. Hang in there. Were they prescribed or ...? I'm going on 5 years clean myself. Look into kratom. I used it multiple times to get off opiates. I was in the hospital once for a month and they were giving me IV dilaudid every few hours, that kratom saved me from the worst WDs ever once I was released. It was also easy to taper down and off of.
getting a call and needing to pause at 9:33 led to an interesting moment of asking myself what exactly I'm looking at when I turned my attention back to the video.
Amazing video as always. Love how you analize the games and can see the best in bad games and the worst in good games. A true gamer.... Keep up the good videos! Love from Portugal!
I never expected to see anyone make a video about this game anymore. I still consider Silent Bomber to be one of the best action games on PSX, the combat is so god damn fun and intense. I love the music as well. I'd really like to hear more electronic music in modern games instead relying on orchestra all the time. I hope this video puts more eyes on this game because it honestly deserves to be remembered. Maybe even... remastered? Yeah, wishful thinking, I know.
It fills me with nostalgic joy to see you cover this. I was one of the unfortunate crash victims as well, what a bizarre way to fix it. This game will forever be remembered because "Welcome to the Brain Room" has always been a such a memeable phrase for me :D
Awesome video. Now I wanna see you playing Jade Cacoon: Story of the Tamamayu. That was one of my favorite playstation games growing up and not many people know about it
I absolutely loved this as a kid, it was so good I still think about it every now and then and give it a bash. Quality stuff right here and such an obscure find.
@@dracmeister so much of the Metal Gear Solid series is about the neverending nature of combat and how many of the characters are just sort of resigned to being nothing but soldiers who want nothing more than to keep fighting until they die in battle. That also reminds me of the iconic Fallout opening lines of "War. War never changes." I love the social commentary of both series and I really enjoyed seeing the attitude in a different game
Now this one takes me back. I still have that Playstation Magazine demo disc, but I forgot how much of a banger it was! It was one of my faves back in the day. I got a ton of mileage out of that disc, especially the Ace Combat 3 demo.
This is one of my favorite games of all time; whenever someone brings up PS1, this is one of the games I think about besides Brave Fencer Musashi for some reason
Josh Strife thank you for the nostalgia hit. o7 Watching this makes me think of three other games that you have yet to cover that I loved as a kid. Hoping you will cover them in the future. BRAHMA Force: The Assault On Beltlogger 9 Front Mission 3 Vandal Hearts

I’d played RPGs prior to .Hack but the meta nature of its story-telling and presentation and the unsettling plot left my brother and I so deeply engrossed for years. Those original 4 are still largely unknown to this day

I remember playing this in one of those old ps1 demo discs. For years I tried to find the game but never came close because I was a little kid and never got to know the name of it. Al I remembered was the white-haired protagonist.Thank you Josh, form the bottom of my heart. I can now sigh of relief
I loved this game growing up my older cousin borrowed it to me and he never got it back, he passed away two years ago but he was the greatest. R.I.P ❤
Same! So excited for this one.
You got to love '90s anime villains in their melodramatic delivery of everything lol.
Mandela effect is a hoax made by supid woman
Dude, I genuinely asked for this on the Future Cop vid thinking it will never happen and no one has heard of this game. 🥲
A lot of people played them back in the day. It was just a very long time ago...
Did anybody here ever played PSO aka Phantasy Star Online ? i loved to play this as a kid so much , one of my all time favorites !
@@CasepbX Whenever I hear people talk about PS1 classics, it’s a load of different games though! I very rarely if ever hear people praise these ones. It’s so rare to find someone who has even played them before somehow.
27 videos later of "was it good" and im amazed Josh didnt go insane from witnessing the pure art of those games
I think he went insane from covering otherland.
Old game bad amirite? XDDDDDDDDDD
Graphics isn't everything, buddy. Josh himself said a good art style transcends time.
You're gonna end up choking on one of those one of these days
loved this game so much as a kid...I really wish we'd get a revamp for it
The designs of enemies are so impressive that i'm thinking on use as examples for my architetonic projects.(in real life)
On the one hand, yeah the story is melodramatic and the ideas you had about gameplay choices would have helped a lot.
This channel has been amazing for finding the names of childhood games
i love this game, still replaying it from time to time
Oh my Holly Molly! I played this on a burned CD on my ps1 with 6 years old. I always loved the gameplay and the aesthetics. Never thought someone knows this game.
It could score a "I regret nothing!" out of 10. :D
Thx for the video. It was a blast. :)
Genuinely squealed a little when I saw the title of this video. This game was frickin' amazing and I don't even care if Josh hates it. I love it. I still have my PS1 copy, even tho I can't play it on anything.
Amazing game.
You can play it on your phone with emulator
Would be easy to rip to your computer and run it on a PS1 emulator.
THIS GAME WAS UNDERRATED BACK THEN ! *LEGEND*
thank you for giving me so much grade-A nostalgia content to sift through while I play Guild Wars 2, I love your videos!
Such a classic gem! Thanks for shining some light on this great game
PS1 had an unlimited amount of good games, the greatest console to exist imo. I remember trying to S rank all the stages to unlock all the characters for verses mode.
I remember the sense of solemnity and melancholy this game had, even though i played it as a kid
Not halfway done with the video but this is looking like a real hidden gem. Not like those fake hidden gems, mind, but an actual one. Good shout!
Couldn’t be more excited to see this here. So many memories!
I remember playing a demo of this when i was a child and loving it. Been thinking of it lately but forgot what was its name.
Thanks for making a video about it Josh. i wish i've played the full version back in the day.
I've always wanted to play this since the demo disc I saw it on gone be a good video 😊
I really don't have the energy or space to subscribe to any more channels, JoshStrifeHayes is enough for me
This game was literally my childhood. It brings to mind so many good memories.
omg yes, i was searching for it so many years!
I see you're a gamer of culture
This game was very fun to play, the original playstation had some real gems of games
I played every mission on S rank
Still have the original PS1 disk
Benoit's voice was driving me crazy because it sounded so familiar, until it finally hit me that it's Kenshin.
Finally this game gets the recognition it deserves. Hope you cover Tail Concerto too, love that game.
I remember playing this against my cousin and he beat me every time, but it was still fun hehe.
This is actually a game I never played or knew about. Thank you Josh!
Good times
Would love you to take a look at Galerians. Amazing but hard game.
Could never beat it.
Your narrative style is amazing. Keep on keep it on🎉
I want the "Was It Any Good - Shogo Mobile Armor Division" video. Please Josh, make it happen!!!
Looks like an awesome game. Always sad that CC2's original works are mostly ignored, even with the recent Fuga 1 and 2.
This is one of the best PS1-games, I still have it.
Always loved this game, the final boss is way too hard.
I never even played this one but still had to watch it all.
Keep covering these golden age classics!
oh my good lord, I only ever played the demo of this, I thought it was afever dream for a while.
That ending scene, especially without the context of the instruction manual, is so gloriously over-the-top. Awesome
The design of the game sort of makes me think that perhaps they wanted some sort of arcade-centric game, realized that game centers just aren't a thing overseas, then dolled it up a little bit for a home release. The 1-2 hour window is what many modern arcade games shoot for.
yes it is. I remember playing it on ps1 and I have it on my PSP. something about setting bombs and running away just 10/10
Could we ever have a "was it good" for chaos legion? A game i loved but havent heard anyone talk about it and think itd be a great game to cover
That was that Capcom game ripping off themselves with Devil May Cry, right ?
I think the answer is it was bad
Man, that soundtrack is great! I miss the "console techno" so much...
I miss games like this, not to imply new ones are bad, I just miss the unique mechanical emphasis a lot of old PS1 games had, I wish we could get more stuff like this nowadays from studios but at least we have the indie scene.
let me do it for you. new ones ARE bad. video games suck now.
Don't even need to watch the video to say YES. This game fucking rules. I still go back and play it every few years. Hidden gem FOR SURE!!
😎 First!
Loving these videos. How about one for The Phantom Menace game
Great IP.
Never even heard of this game, but I'll be checking it out for sure now! Love your work, great stuff !! I appreciate how thoroughly you review these titles.
you could make one video about blade of darkness, it was such a good game but not many people knew about it until it realease on steam
i still own this game and replay it every so often. i love it
Knowing that the game just crashes and how to fix it has solved a mystery that's bothered me since my pre internet childhood. Thank you.
Oh my God the one I've been waiting for 😭 Literally never clicked a video so fast. So gassed for you to cover one of my favourite ever games. I played the absolute shit out of this when I was a kid, but never made it past the chess boss - I remember it being hard as nails! Can't wait to get stuck into this later ❤
Edit: Just finished - another fantastic video! Glad I wasn't the only one that struggled with that bloody chess battle. Surprised you didn't mention the soundtrack/sound design much - definitely one of the most memorable aspects of the game to me!
THANK YOU for playing this. I played a demo version of this game when I was young, but could never remember the name of this game
UI, System sounds, music, colour palette and graphics heavily remind me of Armoured Core!
I remember playing silent bomber on a demo disc, think legend of dragoon was on the same one for hours on end. Good times.
Was too poor to afford it as a kid, but I played the hell out of the demo. Absolute hidden gem!
Same bro, demos saved my gaming years as a child. Toomba also kicked butt.
I would I could put into words how grateful and happy seeing you upload man.
Currently going thru Opioid withdrawals and it’s lowkey kicking my a$$ 😭🤣🤣
This is one of my favorites for the ps1. I stumbled upon this by accident, and was hooked. I still have my copy, and still play it from time to time.
I loved this game growing up but forgot the name of it!! Thank you for helping me rediscover a childhood gem!!!
That was one of my favorite playstation games growing up and not many people know about it
Oh wow you plucked this memory from childhood I couldn't even remember the name of the game. But the soundtrack and strange combat stuck with me.
I absolutely loved this as a kid, it was so good I still think about it every now and then and give it a bash. Quality stuff right here and such an obscure find.
The blue mist Colonel's death line reminds me a lot of Metal Gear Solid bosses and their attitudes towards battle
Felt some Vulcan Raven vibes for sure.
I appreciate the macabre coincidence of this particular review being released on the day of the unabomber's death.
This is one of my favorite games of all time; whenever someone brings up PS1, this is one of the games I think about besides Brave Fencer Musashi for some reason
Josh Strife thank you for the nostalgia hit. o7
Watching this makes me think of three other games that you have yet to cover that I loved as a kid. Hoping you will cover them in the future.
BRAHMA Force: The Assault On Beltlogger 9
Front Mission 3
Vandal Hearts
This was one of my favourite games on Ps1..i replayed it more times then any other game even to this day👍
this game brings back so so much nostalgia x3
I had completely forgotten this game’s name, just remembered that it was incredibly fun when I was small. Also since you mention .Hack in this video, please PLEASE for the love of God do the series! I’d played RPGs prior to .Hack but the meta nature of its story-telling and presentation and the unsettling plot left my brother and I so deeply engrossed for years. Those original 4 are still largely unknown to this day
Just started the video, so Josh might talk about this later, but i immediately recognized the tutorial voice over guy from the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron games where he played a similar role!
