I made a Partial Extract kit yesterday...Woke up @ 1:30Am thinking "I better check my beer". Go down stairs and Wham, the airlock apparently just blew off and the foam was starting to ooze. Think, hungover and not even awake, what to do. I quickly went on a hunt for tubing and had the blow-off going into a container a few minutes later. I think it was the Craig Beer Angel that woke me up. Thanks Craig:)
I gotta hand it to you Craig, you sure do have a knack for friendly, informative, down to earth instructional videos on the art of brewing. I truly enjoy, and look forward to all of your videos! Keep on truckin'!
The bloopers are priceless Craig! Keep adding those when you can. Great job as usual.....small world but I just asked you the question about using a blow off tube last week....and look what happened in this fermentation process! Can't wait to hear how it turned out.
With the mead, most of us without alot of spare funds, brew mead in gallon lots. It's far cheaper this way, for 20.00 u get 4 litre bottles of mead to enjoy. Honey is expensive everywhere. I make a gallon batch every mth this way. Cheers love your videos.
only a 1/2 the way through this video, but what a great video so far... I've never seen anyone sparge the grains in a partial extract. But it makes perfect sense... I don't know why I didnt think of it and why others dont do it... brilliant... also, enjoyed the video quality. Its nice to watch videos where the camera is at a good angle fixed position as opposed to being hand held and shaking etc... nicely done.... I look forward to watching more of the past videos.
LOL! I remember my only blowout... It was a Cherry Stout and the wife woke me up at 2am asking "what was that?" The airlock rocketed into the ceiling along with a spray of foam! From that time on, any heavier gravity beers were made with a blowoff tube from the start. Great vid Craig.
Thank you for another enjoyable video. Thanks to you, I've done 5 successful kit and kilo brews, and just started my first mini mash! I just love how the smell from the aroma hops fill the whole house as soon as they hit the hot water:)
Awesome video. I love how you break it all down so it is easy to follow. I started brewing last summer after seeing you with the Cooopers kit and now I have 2 kits constantly on the go and for some reason can't keep up with demand. Might have to get 1 more. Please keep up the great work.
can't call in to radio show being in ireland but i hope some of your follows do. listened to last 1 (clicked link) thought interviewers had no interest in subject and were only looking for comic effect. good luck craig.enthuse the curious, educate the ignorant and impower the bevoted. remember brewing beer is fun and to be enjoyed. amen
Another great video Craig!! Love the bloopers! Let's people know that no matter how long you've been brewing, you can still make mistakes and can learn new things!! Cheers Sean
CHEERS! I just received my brewing equipment in the mail and I can't wait to get started. I opted for better bottle over carboy because if a carboy bursted in my apt my SWMBO would KILL ME! LOL. I have fuggles IPA kit to do with in the next week or two. I am so nervous to brew my first real beer. Thanks so much Craig for posting your videos. I will let you know how it turns out . Cheers again Craig thanks for all of the hard work.
It's great to see you brewing again Craig! Looking forward to the taste test of this beer. BTW, I use a big tube (the same size as the hole on the lid) for a blowoff. I used to use a smaller tube but as you seen, they tend to get clogged easily. Anyway, the bloopers are here to stay as everyone suggests. Keep them coming and cheers!
The reason for the shape of the kasteele bottle is that is bottle conditioned just like the beer we make. That bottle is designed to hold the pressure. In my experience any beer is a bottle like that is world class. In my opinion the best beer ive ever had is a Belgian made Triple called Duval (belgian for Devil) and that comes in the same bottle. Micheal Jackson the beer critic referred to it as the best beer in the world and i agree.Very expensive but soooo good. lets do another liv music part
finally finished watching it... too many distractions... You're a busy guy... I may try to call in Tue night if I can... anyway back to this video, it was very interesting... I've never given much thought to how long the extract should be boiled... Just always assumed that it should all be put in early and left in for the entire boil... guess I've still got lots to learn... gonna try to watch more of your past videos now... again, nice video work and enjoyed the way audio was handled too...
There is an ancient theory that squeezing the grain bag will release tannins. Thankfully, qualified beer geeks have disproven this theory, and people are free to squeeze their grain bags to their hearts content.
general question. i ask here in hope of swift response.narrow necked carboy and S airlock with steriliser (VWP)in it. yeast cast half stirred rest sprinkled. lift by handles on shoulders and back feed tru air lock. all i could think to do was nip to shop get raisins mixed berries and make 1 of your homemade yeast nuitrients. its only 6hrs but no pressure. its a pilsner if that helps oh HB messiah
It'll be interesting to see how this one comes out. I learned something from watching makebeer do a modded irish stout for St Patrick's day (video on makebeer.net). & he added some hops to the Coopers kit (kit can & un-hoped light malt can) by simmering the hops in a small bag in some water for 10-15 mins before adding to the firmenter with the other ingredients. So it seems that you have to make a "tea" out of the hops you wanna add to your kit for flavor/aroma.
@CraigTube I guess that was my question. IDK what effect on efficiency the full boil would have. I assume the kits are designed for partial boils, but I guess not. On a side note, today I began to convert a large chest cooler in to a mash tun, so I may have a whole new set of questions soon :)
Hi, Kasteel (Castle) is great man and they also have a dark one which I prefer. Great vids btw. Just fiished my first all extract pre hopped brew and Im preparing for a partial extract and videos like these are very helpfull. Thanks and keep it up ;) cheers
Craig, another good video. A partial extract kit containing liquid malt extract, grains, and hops looks the part. What about the cooling down process? Could you add large blocks of ice to assist the cooling down process. Thank you in anticipation. Seamus. An ex Homebrewer from the 80's making a come back.
great vid again Craig. Watching it with a coopers stout made with DME, looking forward to you making mead.....did you ever make Coopers ginger beer ?? .keep up the good work. cheers brian in ireland
yo craig, google "blow off tube" regarding your issues with ridiculously excited yeast. Bascially you put a tube from where you'd normally put the airlock, into a bucket of water. It has the same action as the airlock, but it can handle extreme amounts of CO2 foaming. Its what the big breweries (and us mad bastards who do super-high gravity grain brews) do. Really easy to set up. Check it out bro.
Great vid Craig , I have a question is it better to use metal spoons for mixing beer or cook spoon plastics ; Been told by a few guys metal is better , It`s all steriled in La meta bysulfate & rinced in mega hot water but they don`t complain about the beer.
when looking for cheap honey ask around in the polish/russian community many of them keep their own bee's or like my family buy from these people we buy fresh unadulterated proper honey usually for a couple dollars per kg they often situate their hives in interesting places too so you can pick up berry honey or red or blue gum honey or one of my faouvrites citrus honey
I have my first mead going. It's a cranberry, blood orange mead. I got the recipe during a mead class about 2 months ago. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Mead is generally a higher ABV than beer or wine. Why not set the overflowing fermentation bucket in the deep sink or tub and let'er flow? Then clean up when it's done?
So you said that roasted grains do not add to the fermentable sugars in the wort, but im confused because I thought that all grains are roasted. Could you clarify? Love your videos. I just ordered my kegging setup and am building my brew kettle. As a total newbie the idea of a partial extract really appeals to me. Perhaps my second batch can be a partial. Thanks again, keep the vids coming.
So I have recently purchased a large 7 gal. pot and burner. At first I thought I could brew with just the kettle for a while while I discovered the proper technique for all grain brewing. Unfortunately it looks like all I can do is easy kit brewing with that large of a kettle. Is there a way of doing all grain recipes without investing in three large kettles? I have one in mind that calls for a simple sparge, why cant I do that with one kettle and a strainer????
also bought some crysal and amber malts. wanna try partial. can you spell flocks or suggest alterantive. have IPA ready to go. which is fine going kit. am just polishing off my last few. coopers of coarse. do i need hops if adding fresh malts. met a few dutchies. nice guys, but is it pronounced yoab
Dude, I really need to go to bed but this has happened to me (in the last week) Good Luck with the show (I'll try and catch the end if I can wake up, lol) Jona
Craig, at 10:39 of the video you mentioned that you added a little of the "Malt Extract" to bring the "Gravity up". In other videos you mention to "never" boil your "Malt Extract". Can one be a little bit pregnant? Best regards.
Hi, i'm soon gonna start brewing my first propper brew. But in our gosery store I can only buy fresh yeast for bread.. I now it will give a bready taste to te brew so i want to use as less as possible. How many grams should i need for 5liters of must?
hey Craig, nice vids. I am somewhat new to home brew, does it matter if I use tapwater? My beer always tastes a little off and really thick. I always follow the recipe
This depends on your tap water. They say, if it's good enough to drink, then you can brew with it. Some people use camdon tablets to get rid of the chlorine over night.
+CraigTube you should do experimental videos, where you make a gallon experimental batch, any still like inmate brew style or style of you liking and make a brew thats sort of unique. for example instead of making sake, how about tweaking it a bit, get some sweet potstoes mash it up and use sake ball yeast, and instead of rice use seeet potatoes and see what you come up with, or even a tomato wine, since a tomato is really a fruit.... craigtube experimental brew
Hey Craig, I,m going to be doing my first partial extract from OBK this weekend, I am looking forward to it, thanks for this video it clears things up for me nicely. Did you ever get a new brew pot BTW? Thanks again and love the videos!
why dose samuel adams beer taste like dish soap is that hops ??? i love budwiser, old mill , mollsen dark, coors even key stone in a pinch but i will never drink samuel adams again . and im thinking on making beer at home i make mead and wine good i follow my families recipes. the birch water mead is the best or birch syrup the recipe comes from my canadian great grand father birch water sap 4 gallons or 3 lb birch syrup add 3 lb of honey mead yeast and let stand for a month 21% alcohol content of mead
13yrs later i still come back for a refresh!
Love the bloopers at the end. Shows that my mistakes are normal and we all make them. Good way to use up part bags and old stock too.

bloopers cracking me up im still rewinding and rewatching.....stomach hurting now from laughing gotta stop. great video man! cheers.
I long to see that much firmentation in my homebrews!!! I loved the bloopers because they show the reality of your perfectly edited brewing!
Awesome video. I love how you break it all down so it is easy to follow. I started brewing last summer after seeing you with the Cooopers kit and now I have 2 kits constantly on the go and for some reason can't keep up with demand. Might have to get 1 more. Please keep up the great work.
loved the bloopers at the end. reminds me of some of my brewing days. keep up the great work, thanks.

Nicely done my friend !! 2 thumbs up
THIS IS THE BEST!!! Just moving from kits to doing something a bit different... - -perfect video - cheers Craig!

I love the bumpin' boil music
Loved this vid. Thanks for all the advice. Watching in South Africa.
great video craig! i especially enjoyed the part where you said you should check to see if yhe car needs air in the tires. too funny! cheers!!!

Haha, thanks for putting in the bloopers. Great video, cheers. About to do my first partial now.
Hey Craig, nice video.
That mead is a sparkling melomel. Sparkling because it is carbonated melomel because it has fruit. I like mead! merddyn2002 makes alot of meads also.
Bloopers are a great idea!!! Never put pellet hops in a grain bag? When you pull the bag out what does it look like?
THANKS
Joe

Sorry Craig just found the videos of you playing. I'm a huge Rush fan too. My kit is a superstar kit circa 83' in homage to Mr. Peart.
Great video as usual Craig.
Those bloopers were funny, you should always add those :)
lmao, loved the vid Craig, especially the outtakes, keep up the good work man
Nice vid, Craig. This leads me to the answer of my question in your mini mash vid...But, do you have a beer review vid up? I couldn't find it.
Thank you Craig.

@MrSchpankme .. Well further in the video you explain why you used a little (how much?) of the "Malt Extract". Thx much
Nevermind, I found it! Phat Brown Ale? These playlists are great, but finding the followup reviews to brew vids can be tricky. 17!
Happy birthday!

The mead that I tried at the Ren fair this summer was flat and tasted like they poured vodka into fruit juice and honey. I was good but strong.

When I have a blow off like that I put a sanitized shot glass over the hole. it allow's the gas's to escape and is heavy enough to stay put.

I play also! We share two hobbies beer and drums! Do you have any videos of you playing?

@duckmonsterX ya, this is what the brewers do where i work. Craig could just run a tube to that sink.
Awesome
Dude, I really need to go to bed but this has happened to me (in the last week)
Good Luck with the show (I'll try and catch the end if I can wake up, lol)

Craig how did you mill the grains? Do you need any special equipment?

Why should you not squeeze the grain bag ???
Gotta love the people from the Nether regions

Great video, Craig. Those bloopers were painful to watch! Ouch! I bet this one tastes great. What was the original gravity reading on it?
Another awesome video Craig. I can't stop watching your videos! Do you play drums?
Yes I do.
@CraigTube ask ur nederlands friend if he can send you some tht would be a good video for your fans and experience for u
You can buy honey on amazon for less than $15 for 3kg of honey... 3-pack of 1kg bottles.. =)
Ther may be a chicken in it?
Don't bee's produce Honey?
wy do you start with only 1 or2 gal water
Easier to get to temp and control temp with a smaller amount of water.
What's the reason for not squeezing the muslin bag with the steeped grains?
haha .... 20,000 fewer.... it's me ...lol
