I think the new gen problem is a problem. People not promoting the new pokemon and saying meh no gen 1 pokemon, this set has no chase is an issue. But think about it. Every gen has a small group of favorites. Let’s be honest. Gen 1 is the big 3, Mewtwo, Mew, DNite, Gyarados, Alakazam, Pikachu, eevee. Then you have some maybes like Snorlax, Arcanine, Magikarp. That’s 10 no doubt Pokemon out of 151. No generation has 151 pokemon so if Gen 9 has 5 favorites but only 80 Pokemon, that’s really not that bad. If you make a set have Starmie as the chase instead of Zard, it’s not selling for 1/4 of the price. Now you can do this for every generation. I agree that Pokemon has a problem but this is also on the fanbase/influencers. If all of you say every set without a Gen 1/2 fav as the chase sucks, you’re pushing for Pokemon to not grow and just cater to people that started in the late 90s/early 2000s. People should stop worrying about pumping SWSH sets and pump loving new generation arts. Roaring Moon is a sick design. Dragapult (Gen 8) is a sick design. There are plenty of cool designs in these new gens but people go into new stuff close minded. This is the same thing as old heads hating every new NBA player. Lebron is too soft he’d never last in my 90s with Jordan. It’s bad for the product.
I agree with everything you said but I think they are trying so hard with gen 9 because it’s kind of like “Gen 1 2.0” the brand new anime series starts with our main character exploring paldea so I think they want to resonate with the people starting Pokémon with the new anime and of course the games. I would prefer older Pokémon but I think it makes sense what they are trying to do the only ones who really have a problem with it are the investors. The kids and casual collectors really like S&V TCG pretty sure
It's also too early to tell whether people want it. They were printing too much until Temporal Forces. Lets see how sets get on past that. I've quite enjoyed them trying something a bit different. The only thing I want from them now is 151 for Johto! Those are my childhood Pokemon.
This is interesting topic and I think you are right. This would be great if they do some kind of fusion team cards where legendaries would appear on the cards with a new gen 9 pokemon. That would help a lot to popularize new pokemons
I wonder if we'll see some of these newer pokemon grow on people down the line, and eventually being able to carry a set. I've heard you bring up a few times how giratina has emerged as a pokemon that can carry a set by itself. I'm not sure if giratina was always a fan favorite, or if over time it grew on people. Would be kinda funny if it was similar to how initially everyone will think a set is trash, and then a few years go by and all of a sudden it's the greatest set of all time 🤣
I’ll always be more attached to the gen 1 and 2 pokemon and some select others after like Rayquaza, Giratina, Milotic, etc. BUT there are a few new pokemon that are in my opinion phenomenal and I’m surprised they aren’t more popular. Miraidon and Koraidon are both fantastic! And their SIR’s and promo cards are amazing. Scream tail is fantastic. I want so bad them to add a scream tail skin for jigglypuff in super smash bros. Would be hilariously amazing. Roaring Moon is I think a better design than salamance. Iron valiant is a better design than Gallade. They could have done a better job with naming.
I think it may be counterintuitive, but pokemon not only wants to make sets that feature the new pokemon, they also want to make weaker sets that appeal to the players. As they make more and more weaker sets back to back, it makes the upcoming "great" sets THAT much greater for collectors. If we had back to back great sets for ever, it would put way more pressure on pokemon to keep raising the bar. Oh how a set similar in strength to Lost Origin/Evolving skies/crown zenith would be adored if it came out today. That breth of fresh air feeling can only come after a lull rather than after constant stimuli, if you catch my drift.
This is all true. However, a Pokémon is a Pokemon is a Pokemon. People will like and collect what they like and at the end of the day, they are all Pokemon. This is why we typically analyze a set based on what the contents of it are based on what people want and like in a general sense. S&V is trying to push a lot of new stuff and I think long terms that may actually help it depending on where things go. Time will tell the story. But there will always be value in most of these sets long term in some context beyond MSRP.

Its going to take time. Pokémon is still young in terms of Age. We are the ones that grew up with the first 3ish generations of Pokémon. There is still Kids and Young adults that will be coming into this hobby as they get older that Grew up / Growing up with Different Starter Pokémon playing the games learning the new Pokémon. Its just gonna take another 10+ years unfortunately in my opinion.

New Pokémon aren’t for the older collectors they’re for the new generation of collectors, the younger kids who aren’t on TH-cam who aren’t investing. This gives off a very narrow view when you just look at collectors you surround yourself with. The amount of Pokémon that people care about is getting lower and lower because we don’t have a connection to these Pokémon like we have in the older ones. We have these connections to these Pokémon we form as a kid. The idea on designs are very biased towards what you grew up with giving the impression that the older ones are a lot better but nostalgia plays a large part in that too.

what i can see going foward long term. if they cant fix this issue... pokemon will fail. maybe in 15 years. you can only make so much of a single pokemon card per generation. if each set has the same rotation of pokemon itll get boring or repetitive. i hope they can figure it out!

I think its gunna be ok. The big hit value cards now are gen 1 - 4 pokemon because thats the generation the people with money grew up with. As time goes on the later generations pokemon cards will go up in value when those generations kids that grew up with them have money. 15 or 20 years from now i bet those 15 dollar moriadon and koriadon cards will be expensive
Sv is already dominated by early generations. Zard bdif... lugia, mew, pidgot, greninja,legendary dogs, snorlax, ect.,top meta staples TF is a fair attempt at forcing some beautiful and playable new gen stuff imo. At a time when attendance at regional events breaking records. Might bleed over to pure collectors. Who knows 😅

I definitely believe Pokémon can stop creating more Pokémon. They can try and bring these new Pokémon up through the games and show and slowly through the cards by making them highly playable cards in the tcg and giving sick art work and high rarity. Totally right, the most expensive alt arts are all Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon that basically says it all. Giratina and Ray being the exceptions which is not surprising since both are really popular.

On the flip side, my kid loves Miraidon and I just picked up a PSA 10 worthy SIR for under $15. If Miraidon DOES catch on with kids of this era then that purchase will feel like a steal when the kid is grown up and rediscovers his old cards!
Yeah I'd imagine a lot of these Pokemon will get more popular as the kids from that era grow up. We've already seen that with some of the middle generations.
the issue isn't the new pokemon most of us would love a well designed dragon type or ghost type issue is they make crap artwork cards....like ogeperon stupid hat pokemon tera types....like those tera types would be dope if no stupid hat full crystal pokemon with a cool background instead of normal full art vibe make it spicy not bland and basic meh

I think part of the problem is collectors don't age as fast as card generations. Most collectors relate heavily with Gen 1,2 and 3 because it was their childhood. Wait until the children of today are the collectors in their late 20s to 30s and see which cards/sets have value and are chased.
Ever since I pulled my second Magikarp out of that booster bundle Last week, I open eight booster BOXES and I got two iono sir, 2 chien poa sir, and finally on the eighth booster box I hit my third Magikarp smh lol now I switch to one piece awakening of the new Era and it’s your fault because I watched your video and I saw those prices and bang today I got a English booster box and four loose packs from my local shop I traded three Charizard SIR151, that third Magikarp I pulled out of that eighth booster box because that one was horribly off centered, and one Iono SIR
Well I wasn’t going to pay cash and I pulled out of those Charizard’s SIRs from 151 and to iono And three magikarps Plus I only open one piece when it’s loose packs I am collecting the booster boxes sealed.. Going to trade bulk today for another one trying to have 10 booster boxes within two weeks

I don't see things going that way. 9 times out of 10 if the parents are Toronto Maple Leaf fans the kids will grow up to be Toronto Maple Leaf fans. Same for Pokemon. The kids are going to most often like the same Pokemon their parents do and Pokemon isn't helping matters by printing 151.

A return to the old (pre E-Reader series) WoTC designs would be huge if they bring out a 251 set. As for original stuff, I think a focus on quantity over quality is the issue. There's no reason why they can't come up with creatures just as good as (or better than) some of the early ones.

Aren't you worried that the market will shift from old pokemon to new pokemon long term? I'd probably consider old pokemon a "developed market" and new pokemon an "emerging market" and diversify my portfolio accordingly so that I can win big, or at least not lose as much, if the market shifts.
The only problem is the pokemon company's lack of creativity. There are so many arts, ideas that can propel sets. Take tag team for example. Gen 2 has practically been ignored for past 20 sets. Pokemon isn't really good at giving people what they want or innovating.

They have to wait for our generation to grow older for a better balance of pokemon fandom. Basically anyone over 30 prefers generation 1. @@NostalgiaNomicsim gonna be honest the poketubing investing space is in its own Gen 1 bubble that doesn’t account for any other part of the franchise. Its all on the influencers constantly dumping on the new not giving the space and time to age but at the same time magically surprised when it pops off.

A return to the old (pre E-Reader series) WoTC designs would be huge if they bring out a 251 set. As for original stuff, I think a focus on quantity over quality is the issue. There's no reason why they can't come up with creatures just as good as (or better than) some of the early ones.

Aren't you worried that the market will shift from old pokemon to new pokemon long term? I'd probably consider old pokemon a "developed market" and new pokemon an "emerging market" and diversify my portfolio accordingly so that I can win big, or at least not lose as much, if the market shifts.

I'm selling a bunch of singles from 2012-2017, and I haven't even ever seen or heard of most of these pokemon. Lol. There is way too many
The only problem is the pokemon company's lack of creativity. There are so many arts, ideas that can propel sets. Take tag team for example. Gen 2 has practically been ignored for past 20 sets. Pokemon isn't really good at giving people what they want or innovating.
