Born and raised in Australia, Sydney. I think personally as a POC hijabi, towards the end of high school I did feel very on and off bout my Muslim identity but alhamdulilah I’m okay now. Towards Sydney the actual city it can feel lik your the odd one out but as long as your confident, no one can touch you.

as a hijabi since i was in year 2 living in Australia, I've never experienced racism in person. I've definitely gotten stares when I was in environments that were away from where i lived. the area i live in is extremely multicultural filled with Muslims so i if anything it is extremely accepting. but talking about different parts and states in Australia theres definitely a stigma around Muslims and different cultures and racism definitely isnt rare. it really depends on what area youre in and what environment you surround yourself with.

As a Lebanese Christian living in Sydney I was brought up in an area where it was I would say 95% Australians and my family was one of the 5% but my cousins, aunties, uncles, grandma and grandpa were all living in a multicultural area in Sydney. When I was in primary school there were kids that would make fun of the food that I would eat because it looks weird or doesn't look tasty when really it was just cultural Lebanese food. When I reached high school 99% percent of the school is all Australian so I felt like and still feel till this day that I can't relate and no one would understand like why I didn't have as much freedom as them. One of my close friends that is Lebanese and greek (keep in mind i'm in yr 9) recently just got called a terrorist by an Australian at school. Basically it depends where you live in Sydney you can feel like everyone around you is relatable and you can feel confident or you can feel the odd one out and question yourself and get stares. (sorry this is rlly long I feel like I just wrote an essay 😂)

Born and raised in the U.S and to be honest my experience was similar to yours. I went to a very multicultural high school and felt really comfortable, until I went to university last year. It was a really big culture shock to not see people that look like you but after some time I got use to the stares and now don’t give two shits😭😭😭

Challenges when you were growing up into adulcency and what age you achieved mental maturity? With a splash of reminiscing of memorys when you were younger? Society expectations when you were younger vs now?

im muslim and living in america. growing up my mother always had us wear the hijab but after i reach a certain age i understood what the hijab meant to me. so it wasnt really a struggle for me, but i do see hijabs around struggle because of the society we live in around that states. some feels as tho they fit in with non-muslims or want validation from them. but for some its just their journey with the hijab like i said based on the society we live in and they just have to understand what the hijab truly means to them.

As a black muslim girl from Melbourne Australia, I wouldn’t say it’s “VERY” racist. I think like every western country you can be subject to discrimination and bigoted people/groups. But for the most part I’ve only had positive interactions. There’s that odd side eye when you’re in a white ass suburb or a look of discomfort sitting next to the old greek nona on the train, but I can’t say that I personally have faced primary racism. Usually if there’s racism it’s passive. Btw your h2o impressions had me dead. Just finding out about your podcast but I’m glad I came across it you lot had me entertained, keep up the good work

It helps that sooooo much Somalis here and lowkey being so far from other countries makes people here, maybe just Melbourne, relaxed and calm. If someone is gonna be racist it’s gonna be discreet or passive cause they are too afraid.
