SOOO HYYYPED Crossing my fingers so hard that avowed does well and is fun... Hopefully it will encourage poe3 to be made cause id love to go back to eora as the watcher again in the future too. Till then, can hardly wait to see the living lands!^^
So just because this video is somewhat lackluster and misses out most of the actually interesting stuff, I'm gonna write up my own lore summary. The Aedyr empire was formed 424 years before the start of Pillars of Eternity 1 after the human Aedyr kingdom and the elven Kingdom of Kulkin merged. It exists on a continent, also called Aedyr, that's on the equator so the climate is pretty tropical, with a wet and dry season. Meadow Humans and Wood Elves form the majority of the populace, with a growing number of Coastal Aumaua and Ocean Humans as trade with Rauatai and Vailia continues. Aedyr has a unique cultural practice known as the Haemneg. In addition to marriage with someone of their own race, as Humans and Elves cannot produce offspring with eachother, individuals are able to form a Elf-Human union known as a Haemneg. i.e. each individual can essentially be married to a human and an elf at the same time. A Haemneg is usually practical, used as a way to pool resources between households (in the case of the lower classes) or to consolidate political power (in the case of the nobility). The government of the Empire is based on this union, with the Empire (at least in theory) ruled by a Human monarch and their Elven consort, joined through the Haemneg. In the past they were a powerful colonial empire, once having control over the regions now known as the Dyrwood and Readceras. These colonies have since split off and have their own unique culture, governments, and wars. Among the other cultures of the world, they are often seen as somewhat stuck-up - especially by those in the Dyrwood. They value duty and modesty above all, and look down on those who do not live up to their societal standards. Their history of living in and taming the harsh jungle has given them the idea that they alone represent the civilised world. For more info I recommend looking at the Pillars of Eternity wiki. They have a bunch of really cool info there which this video for some reason left out.
Noice! Does the tradition of each council member leading their own faction still persist? Does our background elude to what kind of faction we're leading? I got a lot of questions lol
@@tnecniw In the vid, when the Kingdom of Aedyr was a thing, there was council of tribe leaders that elected a king. Each council member led a tribe. In present day, we are a member of the Emperor's council, so I'm wondering if we're also a leader of a certain faction that pertains to our background.
@@SupportCrow The Aedyran empire is way weaker than in its founding which this video is talking about. The Waidwen war caused the Dyrwood and Readceras to break away from it. Because of this Aedyran lands are likely mostly elven now. Pillars 1 and 2 happens right after this so no time skip to see now heavily it effects it. If Avowed is even 30 years after Waidwen's legacy it could just be an elven nation.
That was great ! Sounds like a nice place too, though it was an empire and many people fought to be independent from it (which might be mentioned in the next videos).
I'm seeing a lot of videos that talk about the lore or the world of avowed in general, I don't want to spoil anything until I touch the game, I imagine that the information that is said in these videos is also reported in the game, right?
@@mementomori771 Really, cause it seems like Avowed takes place after Pillars 2. The Godlikes disappearing and the Dreamscourge are directly linked to what happened in Pillars 2's ending.
I really hope Avowed writing is great like in PoE 1, PoE 2 Deadfire and Tyranny and not meh like Outer Worlds. The completely black and white morality killed it for me.
From my limited understanding, the Aedyran Empire has a Human and Elf as their ruler and there is no crossbreeding between the species (No half-Elves or Humans). So how does the Empire have a hereditary monarchy?
Weddings between humans and elves in Aedyr are ceremonial in nature (they're called Haemneg), so they would have actual families outside of the Haemneg (Aloth's mother was in a Haemneg for example though she did end up living with her Haemneg partner after her husband turned abusive)
@@SaintxNio if you want more info this is directly from the wiki (though I'd just recommend reading the whole article, imo Eora is honestly one of the most well thought out worlds I've come across in all media): "The cultures of elves and humans have become so intermingled in the Aedyr Empire that they led to the emergence of several unique institutions designed to normalize relations between the races. The most important of those is the haemneg, a ceremonial marriage between folk and elf. In many cases, a haemneg allows two households to pool resources. Among the aristocracy, haemnegs consolidate power. Sometimes, it is a means for a noble to add another administrator to his or her household. Consorts are received with almost the same level of respect as their noble counterparts, which can be extremely useful.[23] Technically, they are supposed to be for purely practical/political/financial reasons but they are often driven by emotions and desire. Haemnegs cannot be performed unless both parties are already married. If someone who is in a haemneg becomes a widow or widower, they are often pressured to re-marry unless they are past typical parenting ages. "
I am ever so slightly annoyed with this video too. Like it is a bit better than the species video. But this too is a bit to rosey… :/ Sure they mention the wars between the elves and humans of what would become Aedyr. But none of the imperialism, the racism, the classism. Maybe it is just me that expect a bit too much from these introductory videos?
Not to mention how all the gods, Woedicca specially, represent also violence and submission. Yes, you can understand the underline here if you think about it, but having played a Steel Garrote paladin in Deadfire makes you question if the very vague and subtle "vengeance" at the end is enough to convey the rean nature of that goddess. I hope this is buildup so people are actually stupefied by the relation with the gods, not a new version where their deeds are rose tinted.
I think you're expecting way too much from a *3-minute video.* Also, most of the people who will play Avowed will be completely new to the world of Eora. This video is intended for that audience. I'm sure that even what they cover here in these three minutes may be a little overwhelming for some newcomers.
I swear you have to be the same guy who complaining about this all the time on youtube and reddit onthis video and the last video. It's just a video doing a short summary to introduce new players. They don't have time to go over the full history in this format.

Do the elves have an equal say in the empire or is it mainly controlled by humans considering they conquered them?
The Empire is ruled by a Human Emperor or Empress and a Elven Consort, unlike many other fantasy settings the Elves are seen as equals.
