    Good to hear both Mics in such a variety of environments. Thanks for sharing your video.

    This was actually really informative! I couldn't decide whether to spend money on a more versatile stereo recorder or the directional one. I think the directional one will work for me now. Thank you from Mississauga!

    Thanks for this video Tom, great comparison. I used this to make a decision on the mic to buy, and went for the VideoMic Pro. Hopefully my videos going forward will have even better audio! 👍

    This video demonstrates why a stereo mic is always the wrong choice for recording dialog.

      Chad Johnson Is there external mic that has a mic pointing forwards and another pointing backwards? That would be handy for walking around, talking to people..

    • @MarksTech
      @MarksTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kieran, wrong. this isnt omnidirectional. this is just stereo.. left and right.. not back. it has two microphones that are pointed at the 2 o'clock position and at the 10 o'clock position

    • @scottisitt
      @scottisitt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a figure 8 mic or bi-directional mic. I don't know of a specific one for cameras, though.

    • @scottisitt
      @scottisitt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, I saw another video where a guy just rigged two shotgun (directional) mics pointed in opposite directions (one towards the front, and the other towards the back). He had each one plugged into a splitter that went into separate channels. In post, he could switch each channel to mono so you'd have the sound from both mics playing in both ears... and he could adjust the volume of each mic if he wanted sound from one more than the other.

      Chad, agree with you 90+%, but I could see it having its place, if you had a group you were trying to pick up an interview type conversation from on the street, you didn't have a boom op or a hand free to hold a mic, and didn't want to pan back and forth between them, or intentionally were trying to pick up location sounds / ambiance as well as a group around the camera. It seems the Zoom recorder with its stereo mics could do the job just about as well though!

    Great video! Very helpful. I saw a review of a mic that had both the shotgun and stereo (Y formation) in one fixture and you could switch between them.

    WHy is there so much noise with the rode stereo ? From the tests, I don't find the stereo being not enough directional though. Actually I hear your voice better (over the usic) with the stereo than with the other. But the weird noise is high with the stereo mic

    • @uhuhno6441
      @uhuhno6441 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because with the Røde he uses the preamp that is built into the camera, as far as I understand. And that is rather shitty in most cameras. Please excuse my french.

    근데 이게 정확한 비교가 어렵겠네요. 비트레이트는 줌 h1이 더 높은데 카메라는 내장 하드웨어가 더 안좋으니까 상대적으로 지향성 마이크가 불리한 조건이네요. 어쩐지 사운드 퀄리티가 떨어진다고 생각이 들었었는데... 아무튼 스테레오는 앰비언스를 더 많이 수음하고 지향성은 확실히 목소리 위주로 잘 담기네요.

    I think this video can be useless because is not possible to compare two microphones while one recoreded on canon dslr (which had poor preamps) and other one zoom h1 which had pretty good preamps for this price point ... just tell me if i'm wrong

    Hi , Why did you set the stereo video mic pro to low pass?

    • @LukaszAntos
      @LukaszAntos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used the high pass filter because of the nearby traffic, for example. Here is info about this filter from Rode: "When activated, the low frequency sounds (bass or low-end) captured by your microphone are 'rolled' off, or taken out of the audio output completely.
      This can be useful when looking to reduce the sound of noisy traffic nearby, for example. Other occasions when the high pass filter could be used is to cancel out the rumble of air conditioners, footsteps, or any other noise in close proximity. This feature is named the 'high pass filter' as the high frequencies pass through into your recording, while the lower frequencies do not."

    • @MistaFussichannel
      @MistaFussichannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok, I am familiar with what the low pass filter does but why set it on one mic but not the other?

    • @LukaszAntos

      The filter was used on both mics

    • @KennyomarGarcia
      @KennyomarGarcia 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's Christian song called "En la cruz", but that's a bachata version that I had never heard before. I thought it was very distracting for this video lol

    • @Gershy13

      Kennyomar Garcia it's actually an English song, he was singing it in whatever language (Spanish?) Joshua David is right. I remember that name, we sang it in church a few times. I didn't know It was by Michael W Smith tho.

    I got ma rode stereo today and am very disappointed. overall appearence is cheap and fragile as a chinese child toy. Design of the mechanical parts are mega fail in so many details, from the battery slot that can not be opened because slick and plain as f* and the switches that are tiny, slick and refuse to move or the overall fragility at says put me in your bag and i will come out broken. but what p*ss*s me off is the microphonic cable that rumbles all the time when touched. but due to the brainless construction it comes out of the body in a way that it will immediately touch the holding construction. the rim for fixing the cable is also embarrassing and totally useless and looks cheap as f*. the dead cat comes with a rode label sewn within that flatters in the wind and makes noises, so first thing you have to do is to cut things off and find some gaffa to find a way to fix the cable. I am sure when the dead cat will cancel wind the cable will catch it. i am really angry about such a complete mess and fail in construction.
