Missed my favourite line in this scene:
"What angle do you think the press will take with this story?"
Bernard: "Oh, wide angle I should think, Minister."
"Puts a different complexion on it"
"Especially in this weather"
Only a British writer could put that line in............
Hacker: 'Make a clean breast of it.'
Humphrey: 'Not the happiest of phrases in the circumstances.'
I love it: "Not a complete coincidence, Minister"
N in my high G gv C no
Mcc C🖕🏿
😎
Paul Eddington was an absolute master at reacting. His comic double-takes are one of the highlights of this wonderful series.
I concur. Naturally comic expression. He was also cheekily funny playing the neighbor in "The Good Life". Only overshadowed by "Barbara" for obvious reasons...
2:26 'Its the parents you know?'. Comedy can hardly get better.
He's right, though.Too much "freedom" and not enough cold, hard reality.
Hoisted by his own petard, lol.
@@RonJohn63 Well, cold hard reality sounds like somthing you would see at a nude protest...
@@RonJohn63 This is literally 40 years old, and 40 years earlier they probably would say the same....
@@JJVernig it's only gotten worse.
Jim's look of surprised amusement sliding into dread 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Flawless!
Surpassed only when he, as PM, heard of his predecessor's death
"It's not the badgers who are going to have kittens, Minister."
"It seems she's a Miss Hacker... "
"Ah, that's my name! :) "
Bernards interjections are priceless! Love him!
Hacker's smile when he thinks it is a coincidence.
Poor Jim. The father is always the last to find out.
3:10 what a performance from Paul Eddington. Delight to disappointment in his expression done effortlessly..... Sorely missed. In fact... just thought...all three in this clip are dead now. Such a bloody shame.
@Me, Myself and I he's gone now. Jan 2020
@@leonhart4eva Indeed. Neither Paul Eddington nor Nigel Hawthorne grew particulary old. Derek Fowlds at least lived into his eighties.
@@Tacitus-qd3ev John Nettleton who played Sir Arnold is still alive in his 90s.
@@Tacitus-qd3ev yeah it feels so bad thinking both Hawthorne and eddington died such painful death from cancer.
He did very little harm.
*Sir Humphrey:* "Well, this puts a different complexion on it."
*Bernard:* "Yes, especially in this weather."
Easily one of the best comedies ever made.
Superb writing and acting in a way only the British can pull off
It isn't a comedy. It is a fictionalized documentary disguised as comedy.
This series is to this day an accurate insight into British politics.
It is a documentary with laughter
Politics is comedy.
Well actually we do know Yes Minister is mostly fictional. Because politics is *bad* comedy, on the other hand Yes Minister is a superb one.
"So they just take it out on innocent people like...me."
Fowldes face through the entire dialogue makes this gold
Would a couple of extra seconds at the end be so difficult? I've seen a few of these clips and they're all cut short.
To BBC, thanks a lot for putting up those lovely snippets.
One, if not the best comedy ever made!
Do you mean the starkers Bernard.. Well yes yes, well this puts a different complexion on it 😅 especially in this weather.. Hahaha good lord!
“Do you mean starkers, Bernard?”
That line just gets me every time!
"All right, Humphrey: Make a clean breast of it."
"Not the happiest of phrases, I must say..."
😂😂😂
If it is going to be exposed, at least let it be clean!
Sir Humphrey really saved his ass on this one
and his daughter's bare one lol
all children are equal but some are more equal than other
one of the best of ym, includes explanation of "the significance of significant" . been there, literally done that trick ...
Like Bill Clinton's classic waffle ". . . that depends on what the meaning of "is" is. . . "
Nice way to cut off the final line there.... I remember when the BBC had standards, 😂
Goodness, you must have been there at the dawn of the dinosaurs!
I've been speaking American All My Life I watch this show and I realized that I need to learn how to speak English
Better late than never!
Today she'd be superglueing her hand to a road, or throwing soup on a painting.
Funny scene and I'm starting to get into this type of humor...but holy cow, they're taking forever to tell Hacker about his daughter!
it's called subtly
@@jahndrahm262 and in humor timing is key
So he can dig a hole for himself first, thus restoring the dependency on the civil service!
Can somebody explain the lack of a health warning before this clip. If I had been drinking a hot drink there could have been a serious accident.
"What a coincidence.....thats my name"
British Understatement carried out nagnificently
Masterpiece!
This series was made years before the controversial DEFRA "TB badger cull". A classic is not only ageless, but often prophetic . . . . ☺
Such great clips so utterly embarassingly edited. Who on earth cuts a video off mid-punchline?
It is BBC, brainwashed in current cultural revolution means they don't have the cultural tools to recognize their former civilization anymore.
@@dilis5105 What an absolutely bonkers answer. We're talking about video editing here. I don't believe Adobe Premiere has a slider from left to right wing.
@@kjaamor2057 To edit something you make a choice based on your knowledge. This basically tells me that BBC does not cherish what they once made.
@@dilis5105 Or it was more likely a simple mistake made by someone who was under the cosh to get 20 videos made in a single day, and this one just slipped through the net.
BBC Comedy grates
What incredibly inept editing! They cut the scene just before all the best lines.
Lucky Hacker wasn't a Troll!
"they will be... that is, will not not be"
Thats your name, Dude
Is the last part of this episode on here anywhere, when Humphrey saves the situation?
The best part is when bernard tells jim talk to her with reason
Jim responds reason? She's a sociology student
The worst cut at the end
And then Hacker's daughter was never seen again...I think.
it itchy haha
Very poor cut. Could at least have ended the scene.
ah yes, the final, and indeed, often the first recourse of those without much to say - taking ones clothes off as a shorthand for a meaningful statement
Ohhh that's my name 🤫😅😅
Does anyone know which episode this scene belongs to?
The Right To Know, the sixth episode of the first series.
His daughter must not be "well-endowed." Otherwise, her picture would have been on Page-3.
I am sure Eddington never got the 1st prize because Thatcher opposed making fun of a prime minister.
Who likes the idea of a modern comedy sequel to this show staring a grown Up Lucy Hacker who has gone down the road of left wing politics with a reputation of a insufferable labor mp the weight of legacy on her shoulders as the daughter of a former pm and has now been appointed to her fathers old job as the head of the department of administrative affairs Sir Humphrey has been retired for many years so now his position is now filled by non other than Bernard.
The same kind of antics goes on just in the original series just 21st century but as her character progresses Lucy starts adopting/exiting many of her fathers well to put it diplomatically his behaviors where political idealism meets the reality of then civil service.
Cringe and possibly even crunge.
Sounds pretty insufferable
They just take it out on innocent people like ... me.
Ha lol
I suppose if Americans have beavers, then badgers are the closest we've got, if a lot bigger and hairier. Save The Badger!!
But what about Ratty, Mole and Toad?
@@richardlloyd2589 I'll leave it to you to find something sexual about Ratty, Mole and Toad. Weasels? Weaseliy done. Stoats? A stoatally different matter (boom boom)
@@cloudsparrow7729
Ever heard of the naked mole rat?
It’s appearance has been likened to a certain part of the male anatomy.
So that’s a 2-4-1 answer 😉
I don’t know how much physiology Toads share with frogs, but long legs, and tongues certainly feature in many a fantasy.
As a side note, ferrets are part of the stoat/weasel family and are famed for slipping up a trouser leg 😁
Edit. Typos.
@@richardlloyd2589 I don't know what part of the male anatomy you're referring to, but I don't think I've got one. I'd remember something like that. Unless you mean prostate gland. I'm sure that looks pretty horrible
Whos the gal in the thumbnail? Shes not in the clip?? Is this supposed to be Hackers daughter?
Yes, that's his daughter. I don't know why she's in the thumbnail because she only has about 5 minutes screen time in 2 different scenes.
Its cute english people talking about how far away their cities are. Meanwhile it is only the size of illinois which is just one of 48 continental united states
