    The 1st story, her laughter is a coping mechanism for her childhood trauma. That definitely was neglect.
    When I was a kid, I slept on bar stools or under the pool table.

    When my dad was young, he enjoyed playing the slot machines. He realised that it could easily become a problem, so he saved up and bought himself a tabletop machine which he set up in his room and gambled away his spare change... only he could then take it out of the machine and spend it. One gambling addiction avoided and he still has the machine and a tray full of old sixpences to play with nearly fifty years later.

    Laws changed in my state about 10 years ago to allow more casinos to be built. One was built not too far from my neighborhood basically next to the corporate park. The number of children and babies that have been left in the parking lot for hours is appalling. A few babies have died in the heat. There are now more cameras and police presence in the parking lot SPECIFICALLY to keep an eye out for neglected children. It’s such a deep, heartbreaking problem.

      yeah that was just beyond the pale. I feel so bad for her. I'm wanting to srart a residential program for teens whose parents are fundamentalist, or in high control groups, cults. I want them to have a safe place to be, to start living in a more balanced place that supports them. But I hear stories like that and I want to open it up to kids like her too. She's got deep trauma. 😢

      @@liz090833 Honestly, I love this idea! It can be very difficult to save teens from cults etc if they are born into them and indoctrinated from an early age, but it's definitely worthwhile. Getting older kids and teens out of these places, or out of neglect and abuse situations, given counseling, education, and training for a future is a wonderful thing. I hope that you are able to make it happen! If monetary support is needed I'd definitely recommend reaching out to a service organization in your area.

      It's so sad that addiction can be so strong that people neglect their kids and even put their lives, health, and well-being in jeopardy. I wish that there were laws in place that where casinos are built that addiction counseling services are advertised at the casinos and available next door, free of charge. I know it would be very difficult to get approved because of how much money those casinos bring to the state, but it shouldn't be a tradeoff for the lives of young people. That's disgusting law making.

    I went to Caesar's Palace in Vegas once, just for the experience, literally the only thing we did was go on a slot machine, put in $5, a minute later won $75 and _immediately_ took the money and left. We were like, get out, GET OUT 😂 it paid for a nice dinner, was a great night.

      That’s how it starts for some people. My uncle and aunt (who never gambled before) used to go to the casino through a free shuttle and $20 free casino chips. Fast forward 5 years later (my uncle died) but my aunt got addicted to slots and lost both houses & all my uncle’s assets & savings and my cousin’s (their daughter) future inheritance as well. My uncle was super thrifty and cheap when he was alive (but he had saved a decent fortune through real estate ventures) so he’d be turning in his grave if he knew how innocently introducing his wife to ‘free’ gambling as entertainment would cost his family to lose all his lifetime of hard earned money. I’m sure she has actually lost over $5M since if my uncle was alive, he would have kept both houses. My aunt now lives in social security cheques and my cousin can’t give her any money, or else she’ll just gamble it away.

    • @Just1Nora
      @Just1Nora 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, the slots at the front door have higher payout rates to entice people to come inside and keep gambling. Plus, you usually have to go inside to the cash out desk to get your winnings, and people get smooth talked into staying to play, just a bit more, just a bit more...Playing once (or only using free chips you're given), winning, and immediately leaving is the only guaranteed return on your money. Glad y'all had the sense to take your winnings, book it, and get a nice meal instead of gambling more. I've heard that burgers and fries for two people can cost $50-$75 now, so y'all did good!

      @@Angetbaby that's awful, I'm so sorry. Luckily I don't have a proclivity to addiction, and my ADHD makes sure I get bored of everything eventually 😂 so I don't worry I'll ever have a gambling problem, generally I think gambling is a bit silly, that's why we only went in for the 'Vegas experience'. Huge fan of "rich dad poor dad" though idk if it works in this economy. When I was like 10 my mom worked as a home health nurse for this very nice elderly couple. Mom's shift was from 8am to 6pm, and they were totally fine with me coming over after school so mom didn't have to get a babysitter or leave me home alone. One of the coolest things this couple had in their house was an old slot machine bought from a casino that closed. It took nickles and they had a bucket of nickles next to it for people who wanted to play. I would feed nickles into that thing for hours and I never won anything more than like 10 cents. One day I played so long I literally used all the nickles in the bucket and they had to open the machine to get out more nickles. After spending like 2 years playing nonstop slots and basically never winning it was branded onto my brain that it's a huge scam. I've only ever played "real" slots once, I spent $5 and was totally over it. It felt just like giving money away to that old slot machine only this time it was my money and no one would open the machine to give it back.

      I've been to the casino one time 'cause my grandma wanted to visit. She gave my sister and I each $10. My sister proceeded to lose it all on a slot machine. I said "Ooh I won $10!" when grandma gave me the money and put it in my pocket.

      @@ZeniaRose I used to take my grandma to the casino a few times after my grandfather passed away. They had done it together once or twice a year as a date night--go and eat steak in the restaurant, get about $50 in chips, sit at side-by-side slot machines, and then walk away either when they lost it all or after 2 hours, whichever came first. Sometimes they won enough to pay for dinner, sometimes enough to pay for the next trip, but most often they lost it all and just shrugged it off. It was never an issue for them, and it was just a nice way for my grandmother to remember him and tell me stories while we played the slots. So the one time my husband and I went to Vegas with some friends, he and his guy friend played some blackjack and roulette, and then afterwards we hung out by the slots. He gave me his card and told me to play for a bit while they talked because our friend Rose was already playing. I was chatting with her and just randomly hitting the button every time the music stopped without paying attention to it. I hit the button and nothing happened, and I figured the card was out...turned out my husband HAD been watching, and when I hit a mini-jackpot of like $200 he reached over and ejected the card *lol* Between his blackjack and that slot machine, we got our money back and paid for about half our vacation. But I have zero desire to do it again.

This happened to a grandchild of a friend of mine when he was at the babysitter's. The sitter shook the baby to wake him...she sedated him with some medicine and wanted him to wake up when mom went to pick him up. The woman caused him to become blind and unable to walk. Humor about dark things is very common, and you should KNOW this by now, but you're looking to be mad at her for...laughing at a story being told in a clearly humorous way?
      Joking about trauma is a coping mechanism for many. Peoplr also laugh at horrible things when they come out of left field because the joke is that the thing is HORRIBLE. People don't laugh because they agree with the thing, or think it's no big deal. People laugh because in their minds, no sane person would ever do the thing they are laughing at.

The casino staff does go out there to check if anybody leaves their kids in the car because I guess it happens a lot. after they were kicked out of the casino, they would take us to the hotel by ourselves and go back to the casino but at least we had tv. I don’t remember how old we were. We lived in Kansas and drive 4 hours to Oklahoma. For reference, I am Hispanic and I feel like it common to be left alone in a car or at home. I don’t do that with my kids but I don’t remember it be scary but I was the second oldest. We wouldn’t have gas in the winter and sometimes electricity. • @Just1Nora
      @Just1Nora ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Yeah. You learn to laugh so you don't cry. You use humor to downplay the severity and impact that it has had on you as a person. There are t-shirts and buttons that say, "You're hilarious!' 'Thanks it's the trauma." I'm going to buy one because it's pretty funny if you've lived it, but it's also really not funny if you think about it too hard. Often trauma and abuse survivors will look like the happiest adults, but it's often because it's a coping or defense mechanism or because they had to be the adult growing up, so what they're going through now feels like a walk in the park in comparison.
      I absolutely recommend therapy or counseling to any abuse survivors. You're not crazy, and therapy isn't for crazy people but everyone, but you do need to address all of those repressed feelings or they will eat through you like termites. The shell looks fine but the inside is destroyed, so one solid blow at a soft spot and you crumble away.
      My counselor has been seeing me since I was ten (my parents weaponized me against each other before the divorce on top of years of emotional neglect and I broke down) my psychiatrist has seen me since age 13 as well and I'm now in my mid 30s. Both get as frustrated as me that I'm the family scapegoat, the token "crazy one", while I'm actually the most well adjusted because no one else has been to counseling or therapy at all. "It's me, hi, I'm the problem." But seriously...they all just blame it on me instead of facing their own problems. 😒
      Victims are not the problem. Their abusers are the problem. Fight the good fight y'all and I'm sending you all of the support, love, and genuine happiness that you need. ❤

    • @Just1Nora
      @Just1Nora ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anakelly76512It could've been Tylenol PM. It's still the same diphenhydramine which can cause problems if taken regularly, and if Tylenol isn't dosed properly it can damage the kidneys. There's a joke about the "Nyquil nap", but jokes are often rooted in reality and some parents and babysitters are guilty of drugging infants and children to get them to sleep.

Occasionally they thought to give us food and something to drink. Outside, in the sun, in a car, in Australia, means Death Valley temperatures in the car after 20 minutes. Fun times. Upside was there were always other kids to play with. No adult supervision btw. Or none I ever recall. We just ran wild. I became a very good reader. And basically, from the age of 7, raised my own younger brother. Not one of the pub goers ever thought to themselves, "I'm neglecting and abusing my children" because that's just how it all was then. The real fun for us was afterwards, watching the drunken fights.

    I feel so much for the casino daughter... I had a very similar situation with my mother growing up, but her addiction was drugs and men. I'd be left at the bar in the bowling alley and drugged with benadryl or something at bedtime so she could go out and party. It was extremely messed up and left me with insane trauma my entire life, that finally at 40 I am able to heal. My inner child was screaming to be there for yours! I'm so sorry anyone has to grow up this way. I hope that she has support and people who care about her now, and a mother like that should be kept at arms length, if anywhere in the picture at all. I don't speak to mine really either, and I've forgiven her for myself so that I could move on from everything. My life wasn't sunshine and rainbows, but at least the people who were there for me cared so very much, I hope you also had some people in your life to make the scary moments less so. Sending hugs!

      I feel so sorry for any child who isn't treated as a loved part of the family. As the saying goes " not all parents deserve children, but all children deserve parents".
      My heart goes out to any of you who didn't have present parents. I don't understand why gambling is legal and glamorised. It destroys the lives of so many innocent people. Thankfully gambling has never affected my family. But my daughter was an alcoholic for about 20 years. Unfortunately her children witnessed too many incidents that they never should have seen or heard. She was raped 4 years ago by my younger daughters partner who knew that she was too drunk to have any say. This is the bottom that she needed to fall to. She has not drank another drink since then. Thank God.
      The bastard who raped her broke her sense of security with a person who had been part of the family for 9 years. My youngest daughter stopped speaking to her after this because scumbag told her that the sex was consensual. Unfortunately she doesn't want to believe that he was capable of doing such a horrendous act. They broke up straight away. Then my daughter found out the next week that she was pregnant with her fourth child. She went through the whole pregnancy with just my husband and my help. She was due the baby Christmas week, 2019. On December 13th she found out that the baby was not alive. She gave birth to her on 16th December. She was perfectly formed. She was born silent.
      So through the choices that two people made broke the hearts of three little children who were excitedly awaiting the birth of their sister. The heart of a Mother who is a tower of strength for her children, trying to navigate them through the nightmare of 2019. The hearts of my husband and myself. Addiction is horrific for the family of the addict. The addict is often not aware of the tornado their actions, unlike the family.
      This is probably too much for some people to read or figure out why I went off on this long story. But sometimes it feels good to know that other people have some experience with the topic. Thanks for reading this.

    I'm 56 now & can totally relate to the first young lady, although I wasn't forced to stay in a car. My mom would leave me alone starting when I was in the 2nd grade (about 7 yrs old). At first she would get a babysitter, usually another Asian lady she knew who had kids my age. I'd go spend the night & sleep over while she went out. Eventually she started leaving me home alone. It never occurred to me why I stopped going to their houses. Years later into my adulthood, I finally guessed that either #1 they got tired of having to watch me all the time and/or #2 my mom wouldn't pay them the money that they were owed, probably because she lost all her money to gambling. It got to the point that she couldn't afford a babysitter any longer. So my career as the world's youngest night security guard began. She would make my dinner & then take off for the local card room/bar to play poker, black jack, etc. She would usually stay home until about two hours before what was supposed to be my bedtime. She would always say "be good & watch the house." Yeah, as if a little 2nd grader could protect anything! Since I didn't have any adult supervision, I stayed up late all the time. Mom would usually be gone until the bar closed at 2 am. Sometimes she'd stay out later if she & her poker buddies decided to grab something to eat at Denny's. She'd come home & sleep until at least noon or 1 pm. I would get myself up every morning, eat cereal or pop tarts, make my sack lunch, & get ready for school. By the time I got home, she'd be awake cleaning & cooking, then the daily routine would start again... I can only recall once when she came to my school - my class was putting on a Xmas concert, I was in the 4th grade. That was the one & only time she ever attended any sort of school event besides my high school graduation in 1985.
    That was my life from 2nd grade all through high school. When I was older, she'd head up to Reno, NV & would be gone for a week or more. Once she was gone for over 2 weeks. I had no idea where she was or how to contact her in case of emergency - we didn't have mobile phones back then. She'd leave some money for me to get food or gas for my car so I could get to school & back. Of course by then, I was a teenager & loved having the house to myself & my friends. If she pulled that crap nowadays, she'd be in prison for neglect & child endangerment. Growing up in the 70's & 80's was a whole different vibe. My mom didn't own a business like the first lady but she also ran a side hustle. She would go buy all sorts of 'American products" usually from the nearby military base (no sales tax) & ship it off to her relatives overseas. They would sell it on the Asian black market & then she would get a big cut from the money they made by marking up the prices. So a $5 jar of Folger's instant coffee would earn her about $30. She also bought high end clothes & jewelry from places like Macy's & made BANK on her return from the black market proceeds. Crazy times!

    The lady who’s boyfriend got her to go to the “seminars” and they pressured them to get credit they couldn’t afford sounds so much like what Scientology does to their members.
    My husband and I became friends with a couple who had retired/cashed out his retirement for around $1 million. They bought a house (this was back when you could get a nice house for $120,000). Anyway, we met them in the local tavern and she was always playing the machines. She would always tell us “I won $400, or $600.” Of course she never told us how much she put in to win that. Anyway, long story short, within 6 months they had run through their retirement, he had to go back to work and start over in his mid-sixties. So it all doesn’t happen in Vegas. But when I told teachers they wouldn't believe me because she was a special ed teacher at the school. Only two teachers and my doctor reported my mother. Eventually my parents got a divorce and I lived with my dad since mom was deemed unfit to have me. The thing with gambling is that you leave your credit/debit cards at home, only take a certain amount of cash with you. If you double what you brought, put away the original amount in your shoe or whatever. Set an alarm on your phone so you know when to leave. In the casinos I've been in, as long as you're actively playing, you drink free. There are no clocks, and the only light is from the casino, so it's easy to lose track of time. Always go in with the intent of having fun, not trying to make money.

Everyone came in scared or depressed and ashamed, but anytime I saw one of them afterwards, they said it was the best thing and they felt so much relief having that monkey off their back.
    Unfortunately, you have to be careful the BK attorney isn't scammy. At one time, a lot of them were signing people up for Chapter 13s because they got paid more that way (you basically make payments to them as well as to your creditors), even though Chapter 7 is better for most people. Chapter 13 is only if you have an asset to protect, like a house with a lot of equity, or you make enough to pay your bills, but need your creditors to stop seizing your stuff and fining you long enough for you to get caught up. Most of the time, though, 7 is the way to go: total and immediate debt elimation (unless it's a student loan or back child support; you owe those forever).

      Set up a Roth IRA and put a little bit in every morning ($20-$30)
      Get a no annual fee credit card and only put one thing on it, example: gas or groceries. By our mid 20’s our credit score was in the high 700’s.
      Don’t buy anything that you don’t actually have the money to pay for it (not including car/house) - but stuff like new phones … electronics … “bigger small” purchases.

    All of the sisters in my mom’s family (5) had a “problem” with gambling, including my mom. But, she isn’t gambling in this story. My mom and dad had to leave suddenly when my grandpa (Dad’s father) died suddenly. My mom’s sister, “Jane”, came over to watch my 3 brothers and me. I was 11, and brothers 10, 7, and 6. My aunt brought my cousin, an 18 mo old. She left us on Fri evening to play poker. She didn’t leave any number to reach her. She still hadn’t made it home by Monday morning. I got my brothers ready for school, made lunches, and sent them to school. I stayed home and took care of my cousin. Tues morning, same story, except I only had one diaper left, and running low on groceries. I was starting to panic, so I called my neighbor. She came in, surveyed the scene, and told me she’d be right back. She came back with bread, peanut butter, jelly, and milk. She also called my mom, (I didn’t want to call, because I knew my aunt would be pissed). I guess my neighbor told mom someone better be at the house in an hr, or she was calling the cops. My aunt showed up, pissed 😄, with McDonalds for the other kids, and toys from the store. Nothing for me. Mom and Dad got home the next day, and I never spoke to my aunt again, unless I absolutely had to.

    In Michigan, families go “up north.” We own cottages on lakes and acreage in forests. It’s what we do.
    I go to a casino in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. It’s just off the highway, on the way to everywhere up north.
    There are signs all over the parking lot that say don’t leave your kids in the car. A lot of signs. There’s one especially large sign where you turn into the parking across this little road (maybe it’s called overflow parking?). It says they will immediately call police if any child under 18 is left alone in the car. There are security cars that patrol the lots.
    I was talking to a dealer there who said they probably arrest at least one parent everyday. They can’t stop it.

And I always walked away with more money than I walked in with. I did get to know my regulars and saw them have some really bad losses. There was one day about a week before Christmas I had one guy completely melt down in front of me. He had ten bucks, lost it in one hand and started crying. It was the last money he had and he wasn’t going to make the mortgage payment. I started freaking out too and my pit boss noticed and immediately pulled me from the table. He explained to me that it wasn’t my fault nor my problem and I am here working a legal job for legal pay and no one forced him to sit down. It still gives me a heavy feeling in my stomach.

    I didn't go through bankruptcy, but I ruined my credit in my late teens because I was irresponsible with my credit cards. My score dropped to like the low 500s. I did something similar as the OP in my late 20's where I got what's called a secured credit card. I gave a deposit to the bank that acted as my credit limit. Several years later, they switched it to a regular credit card when my credit score improved and gave me my deposit back. (Just make sure you don't go over the limit and make all payments on time) After a lot of hard work, responsible credit card use (never use more than 10% of your credit limit and pay it off each month) , and years of on-time payments; I'm now closing in on a 800 credit score.
    Bottom line, I agree that some basic life skills course should be taught in high school senior year. Something that includes basic banking lessons (how credit works, mortgages, car loans, etc), cooking, how to do taxes, keeping a budget with typical living expenses, and what not. That would really give high school grads the preparedness needed to face the real world.

    While student teaching in Vegas, my mentor teacher told me about a student she had (1st grader) that always smelled so bad so she had to send her to the nurse to get her hair washed. The reason for that was due to her mother & grandmother always leaving the little girl alone at home while they gambled at casinos so they never gave her baths. The teacher called CPS but they said they couldn't do anything because the little girl still had a roof over her head & food provided for her. So once a week, the girl had to go to the nurse to get her hair washed because she had adult supervision at home.

    Dude these stories resonates with my childhood soo fricken much. Bio mother was super physically, emotionally, and mentally abusive to both me and my father but left/neglected my litter brother. When I was younger, she often left me in the back of the van when at the various casinos at night, ALONE! My dad sometimes tagged along and also left me alone as well. When I turned 14 she abandoned us, which left just my dad to take care of us. I think the casino was his coping mechanism as he would often go to the casinos in the morning and stay there all day. I would have to wait 2 or more hours after school (both high school and college) before he would answer my calls and another hour to come pick me up. The same happens when I need to be picked up from work. I often had to take the public bus but they stop operations after 6-7pm... when he does manage to pick me up from my job or school, he would take me with him to the casino.... I hate the casino due to the cigarette smoke as I would have bad coughing fits and have passed out from them numerous times. He got anytime me or my little brother would confront him. BTW he would take my lil bro home when needed and leave him alone at home. My little brother is 6 years younger than me at that time.... I was 17/18.
