Hear, hear! Saw him at the Bridge School Benefit, with Larry Taylor & the Kronos Quartet, and was blessed to see The Black Rider theatrical production in Los Angeles... unforgettable, both occasions!
I'll never forget a few years ago I was busking at Andy's produce in Sebastopol CA and Tom Waits Stopped for a minute to listen. He was there shopping with I'm guessing his wife. I didn't recognize him but when I took a break a man at a table near where I was playing said "Hey that was Tom Waits".
Tom Waits is such a cult of personality, will always love his music and art. One of the first songs I ever heard by him was "Anywhere I lay my head" off of the Rain Dogs album, and his singing was so wild and insane I thought for sure it was supposed to be a joke and it hooked me to listen to the whole CD. to this day it is still one of my favorite albums out there
I know a lot of people don't like the Black Ryder but I remember when it came out and it just blew me away! Like every other Tom Waits record before it I wore that thing out!! There's some great songs there and it's completely unique!
To be honest I never heard of Bob Wilson before, but now I’m very interested. When Tom Waits admire someone I’d be a fool not to pay close attention since I love Waits work.
Robert Wilson: Einstein on the Beach is probably his most famous production, a landmark of experimental theater and probably one of the most influential avant-garde works in history.
Good to see Tom again haven't seen him walking around town for a while he must be busy... whether he knows it or not, he inspired me to quit smoking cigarettes, among other things
I listen to Tom daily, have since I first heard Pasties when Small Change came out - I was 12 at the time and in Cleveland we had a great radio station WWWM M105 which was well known for playing music the mainstream channels wouldn't or couldn't play (If 6 was a 9 comes to mind also from that era and channel). So I begged my mother to take me to the record store so I could buy Small Change with money I was saving in of course my piggy bank. I still have that album today and cherish it. Tom plays Zachariah in Seven Psychopaths and just kills it. You just have to watch him in the "Fishing with John" video too! A brilliant engineer of entertainment Tom is. Whenever Tom's name comes up I just can't help but wonder, "What's he building in there?"
Whoever runs this channel, Tom or a manager, keep up the great work. I love seeing all these obscure and sometimes forgotten video clips, bits and bobs of the man
@@ClockwiseCat I saw him once in Antwerp on his Real Gone "tour". I say "tour" as it comprised no more than 8 shows (or just 7?) in whole Europe. Our venue seated about 900 people. It was the second time ever and the last time since he performed in my country. Also, I wrote 'nobody saw him live' as an hyperbole. I thought it would sit nicely in a Tom Waits commentary section. But let me refrase: virtually nobody saw him live in my country.
@@njits789 He needs to tour more. He did not even tour on the back of Bad as Me. I guess he finds touring tedious. I would too, but he's not getting any younger!
I remember finding this cassette of "the Black Rider"... wondering if this was a real theatrical event. Sometimes living in the US is awful isolating. You wouldn't see a clip of this here. That's the sad part. But there IS a lot of space. A lot of blank pages to fill up with something. If you can tend to it, maybe it won't be an ugly thing. I've never seen high art in a strip mall... well, not intentionally. The line Tom just said, whether intentional or not. Saying it takes a lot out of you "you lose a lot of hair! But you know, it has to be made from SOMETHING!" I'm assuming hair. Thanks for that.
Merci beaucoup! "You're innocent when you dream" Why doesn't Tom move next door to me?! Nothing like this astonishing show ever comes to the boring place I am stuck in- why don't I move- well check out the lyrics to "I Don't Wanna Grow Up"- that sort of jazz. I was reminded of Amanda Palmer in her Dresden Doll days and of when she played a living statue, a bride handing out flowers to make some "bread". At my age I decided to retrieve an old wedding dress from the attic- a thrift shop purchase because I had this Waits-ian idea for the curtains around an as yet unpurchased canopy bed- yeah I get some of those scathing brilliant ideas too but my partner isn't tolerant like Kathleen so I figured well Iive a block from a park. I"ll get some kabuki make-up, a long white wig and make a box and add some Victorian touches to the dress and steal some flowers and ta da! scare the kids as Dickens' Miss Haversham.... Love you Tom. Frank's Wild years, swordfish trombones and Rain Dogs....the 80's. I dj'd Friday nights 8pm in Germany. Heard and played " Downtown Train"...I predicted it a Total Hit. Got a phone call from a tourbus on the Autobahn. Within 6 months Rod Stewart put that song in the top 40.

How in hell did T.W get famous in the U.S...!? He´s so intelligent, so his own, and never conformed to the bigottery of the so called "American dream" He is pure inspiration!
I’m not American and I’ve been a declared fan of his for about 3 decades, so I don’t know if I’m in a position to say anything, but I still will, of course. Any country has weaknesses and strengths. One of the American weaknesses is the fear of opinions, often labelled “political”, as if that was a bad thing. It seems present even in this thread. I want to cancel the cancellers. This type of people probably are so limited they don’t understand that Tom Waits is so much more than funny and weird, so they haven’t discovered they must hate him. But America also has so much more than limiting naysayers. There is room for so many good thoughts and new ideas. If anyone can dream up a topic, there’s probably a whole scene devoted to it somewhere in the US. People deeply interested and willing to go all the way to really understand. This multitude is a wonderful strength of America. Not the only one, but one I love. think this is how Tom succeeded, helped by the people smart enough to be curious and to see i diamond in the raw. I live in Amsterdam, where there’s some of that same multitude. On that note, I see this quality being under attack all over the world, perhaps even more in the US than here. A certain ex president is spreading the poison of lies and intolerance. Selfishness is presented as not shameful anymore. Well, it is shameful! That’s one of many images one might read out of Tom Waits’ music.
@martine.210 I thought it might be. That's not him narrating is it? I'd always thought Tom met Kathleen in Berlin while he was touring there. And she introduced him to Thruppeny opra, and thus Swordfish Trombones was created. Not sure where I read or heard this but it's quite a popular version here in England.
Robert Wilson. He worked with Tom on Black Rider, Alice and Woyzeck. He's the guy sitting next to Stefan Kurt in the restaurant and also in front of the curtain reading "I rise up and I walk with myself".

Much more difficult: first time in Florence 1999, and then in Milan 2008.
I drove 800 miles and caught a felony possession charge crossing state borders to see Tom perform in El Paso. No regrets
