Bumps are like no other race. The tension waiting at the start is incredible; these races are, essentially, a blood sport in boats: the thrill of hunting down the boat ahead and conquering it and the devastating feeling of being chased and caught are more intense than anything I have ever met elsewhere in racing.
The racing is not, of course 'fair' overall. In general, fast boats make bumps: lucky boats win blades - but the fastest boat on the river might start 6th or below and have no realistic chance of finishing head; boats can be 'cheated' of a bump when two crews bump out ahead of them; it is not unknown, on the last night, for the boat starting second (or second in a division) to ease the gearing, go off like a rocket and catch the boat ahead - which of course has to plan on going the full distance, and has not the option of matching the low gearing.
    Everyone should try it.

I was the cox of the red-bladed boat in the vid and I can safely say bumps is unlike any race I’ve ever been a part of- a great experience!

Having rowed in Cambridge bumps 4 times (it’s held 2x a year) I can say it is easily one of the best rowing experiences. One interesting thing you may not have known is that there can also be over-bumps. This happens when, for example, the 3rd boat hits the 2nd boat meaning that they are out of the race, but the 4th boat can still catch up to and hit( overbump) the 1st boat in the sequence. Last year one boat went down approx 9 rankings in one day - a quadruple overbump!

hi aram. amazed you know so littleabout this ultimate form of racing for any rower.
youHAVE TO try it. it is utter torture
it may seem impossible but there are ways!
    here is the secret...
use your contacts to volunteer to coach a smaller oxbridge college or medical school. (no publicity please!) you surely know somebody...
no-one bothers to rigourously check who is rowing at no3 in the 4th or 5th novice VIII....!
You will experience all the pain and pleasure outlined below.
you will make friends for life,
if you are lucky you may "win your oar", better than getting your "blue" and something that for most makes all that "studying" worthwhile (and you wont even need an A level!)
you will NEVER regret the experience.
here are my facebook post thoughts when sharing your advice(sorry if its a bit disrepectful!)
Here is the inside info on "Bumps racing"
Unlike the boat race, it is NEVER dull
I think Aram is a great analyst, but I love the way "bumps" racing has got him totally guessing and groping in the dark on the best way to train for it!
The fact is no-one knows! unless they have experienced it themselves.
Possibly harder to do than qualifying for the Olympics! Although the ability varies from international Olympic rower, to completely unfit novice, the experience is the same for both. Read on!...
Getting a "bump" is one of the best things you can experience in any form of sport, elation, pain, pleasure and utter relief all in the same moment.
Being "bumped" is one of the worst! Pain, dismay, the disgrace of letting your college down, the humiliation(And real danger of injury!)
The race itself:- pure adrenalin. fear and total aggression. The unknown distance! Initial elation of the chase. the combined excitement of the hounds, and the desparate fear of the Hare! The God like status of being "Head of the River" on the final day
Anyone who has ever "rowed over" a full bumps race.will know this race was truly invented by the devil, the tears of pain at the end, lung busting gasping for air, total exhaustion; the utter relief! The solemn oath you will NEVER put yourself through that again, quickly extinguished by the realisation of an addict that you've got to do it all again the next day!
Aram will only learn how to train for it by trying it for himself, 4 consecutive nights for at least once or twice yearly.
Only available at Oxford and Cambridge university, and the Inter London Hospital medical schools on the Tideway....

Bumps racing is a very peculiar form of rowing, and, in mulitple ways, highly competitive. Some colleges take it seriously enought that they invest in decade long plans to rise in the rankings. Tim Foster (Gold medallist, ex coach of the Swiss men's squad, etc. ) was coaching the Keble first boat in Oxford not long ago. It's a sport. It's in a bubble, no doubt, but it's a sport.
