I agree, although he confused Alan Shepherd with Neil Armstrong. (Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon; Yuri Gagarin the first man in outer space, Alan Shephard was the second (and the first American). Not to take anything away from Alan, but Yuri has gotten dismissive treatment in the US, as if him being the first didn't matter because he was Russian! But Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. (Yuri had died a year earlier in a plane crash)

Something to keep in mind for the Bond films, especially in the first ten or twenty years, is how much of a big deal it would have been for ordinary people to see these amazing exotic locations, maybe for the first time. Global travel was probably way beyond the dreams and financial abilities of most people at the time, so these films really were a window to the world.

I saw that movie on TV over 20 years ago, and I still think the way it introduced the main cast by having the camera go through the plane showing each crew member (with the actor's name captioned below) announcing himself as they performed a coms check was brilliant.

The train fight was revolutionary for it's time and is still widely considered one of the best if not the best fist fights in the entire series. It was done pretty much completely without any stunt doubles and took weeks to shoot.
Pedro Armendáriz who played Kerim Bey was actually diagnosed with a severe form of cancer during the shoot. He was experiencing excruciating pain and they moved the schedule around a lot so that he could finish it. Once all of his scenes were shot, he committed suicide in the hospital. He really gave this film his all so that the money he'd get from it, would go to his family.
In the scene of the chess game, most of it was indeed a set. However, some of the outer parts of the frame you see in that wide shot are actually painted. They did a marvelous job with that.
The film was pretty much saved by the director Peter Hunt, who changed around the chronology of the scenes, so that the plot would work and be understandable. Terence Young was a great director, but he was a bit chaotic in shooting films and Hunt was integral to make this work.
Speaking of Young, he was injured when a helicopter he was filming from (for the boat chase) crashed in the sea and after getting first aid, he simply continued shooting like nothing ever happened.
Just one thing about this series. It's highly unlikely that you will like all the Bond films, but I am glad that you've decided to watch them all. Every Bond film does have something good about it, but don't be surprised when some people love a Bond film and you don't quite understand why, nostalgia has a lot to do with it.
As for the song by Matt Monroe: It was indeed the first real Bond theme song, though they played it during the end credits instead of the opening credits.
Btw, they did this film as the second one, because Kennedy loved the novel. That made it a very popular book to be adapted.

As one Bond fan to another, I just want to say well said. I just want to add that this was Ian Fleming's last Bond movie he saw before his death, and apparently he was convinced Sean Connery was right for the part only after seeing this movie.

Bond "fake dying" in the opening sequence is a bit of a trope. You'll see it happen in about 4 more films to the point they make fun of it.
Re: Song, Dr. No didn't have an official song. Under the Mango Tree was used, but not written for the film. From this film forward, all Bond films have songs written specifically for each film. Most of the time, they work the title into song (not always the title, but into the lyrics). The Connery films were produced so quickly because they made SO MUCH money, so things got incrementally added. They cost very little to make (I think Dr. No was 1 million USD) and it made 60 million worldwide. That's the 2021 equivalent of a 8.5 million USD film making 550 million USD at the worldwide box office.

4:57 -- It's Eunice Gayson, who played Sylvia Trench in the first two movies. Her character was to be a running gag--Bond's making out with her but gets called away on assignment--but it was never followed up on after this. In the book, Klebb stabs Bond in the leg with her poison-tipped shoe-knife, and it ends with Bond slumping to the floor. The reader is left to wonder whether or not he survives. The Donald Grant character's backstory is pretty dark--he's a serial killer whose enjoyment of murder makes him a prime candidate as a Spectre assassin. Pedro Armendáriz (Karim) was terminally ill during filming and would soon commit suicide by gun. The actress playing his mistress would figure prominently in the pre-titles sequence for the next film, GOLDFINGER, the film that would be a turning point in the evolution of the series' style. Spectre #1 would appear again in THUNDERBALL, and in the following film YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE we learn his identity and see his face.
    Very enjoyable reaction!

For decades, Eunice Gayson/Sylvia Trench was the only Bond girl who returned with the same actress in the same role, in more than one film. Miss Moneypenny wasn't a true Bond girl, so she doesn't count, and obviously Judi Dench as M doesn't count, either. Others, such as Maud Adams and Nadja Regin, returned, but not in the same role. I haven't kept up with the Daniel Craig movies, so this may no longer be true. Vesper Lynd, for example-did she appear more than once? I don't remember.

Trivia note for you: in the novel, Olga actually catches Bond with the poison boot and the book ends on a cliffhanger with Bond passing out and collapsing. Fleming kind of hit the Conan Doyle stage of being fed up of his most famous creation overshadowing his writing and wanted to write other things for a bit. But like Conan Doyle, in the end demand ensured he was forced to go back to the well.

I know it was mentioned in a previous comment but the story of Pedro Armendáriz (Kerim Bey) deserves to be told in a little more depth.
In 1956, Armendáriz had a role in the film "The Conqueror" produced by Howard Hughes. The movie was filmed in the state of Utah at the time when the US government was doing above-ground nuclear testing in neighboring Nevada. Within 25 years, 91 of the 220 people involved in the production (41%) developed cancer, 46 of whom died from the disease, or complications related to it.
Armendáriz was recommended to Young by director John Ford to play Kerim Bey. After experiencing increasing physical discomfort on location in Istanbul, Armendáriz was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, likely a result of his role in "The Conqueror". Filming in Istanbul was terminated, the production moved to Britain, and Armendáriz's scenes were brought forward so that he could complete his scenes without delay. Though visibly in great pain (he visibly limps in most scenes) he continued working as long as possible in order to assure his family's financial security after his death.
On June 18, 1963, Armendáriz committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a gun he had smuggled into hospital. He was 51.

I’d say that SPECTRE was renamed OCTOPUS, in that game you mentioned, was because the idea and name of SPECTRE was owned by screenwriter Kevin McClory who co-wrote the screenplay of the original Thunderball script along with Ian Fleming and Jack Whittingham. The script was shelved and Fleming turned it into an official Bond book much to McClory’s dismay. At the time of that video game, McClory was still alive and still owned the rights to everything that was written in that script. It was a thorn on the side of the producers of the 007 series, until McClory died in the early 2000s. In the Bond novels SPECTRE only appears in Thunderball,On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and You Only Live Twice. it was used in other movies in order to stand in for the USSR spy agency, SMERSH. The 007 producers did not want to get too political in the movies they made.

My comment is clearly meant to point out that Fleming, while authoring the book (thank you, though, for sarcastically repeating information I already acknowledged) was not involved in the filmmaking process.

I understand why you think the editing was bad in the film. But what you don't know is that the shooting schedule of the film was a catastrophe. The actor who played Karim Bey was diagnosed with cancer, several special effects shots were botched, Connery was injured on set, and they ran out of budget to complete shooting.
So Director Terrence Young told Editor Peter Hunt to disregard the script and make do with the footage he had. Hunt composited some shots, and even ran some backwards, in order to create new shots and add action to the scenes. He literally saved _From Russia With Love,_ and ultimately the franchise.

It's psychedelic and silly, think of it as the inspiration for the Austin Powers movies.
The 2nd one came after "Octopussy" the 1983 "Never Say Never Again" saw the return of Connery in the role one last time. It was released by Warner Bros. instead of UA/MGM.

Wikipedia calls it a Eurospy comedy. It has several actors from the official Bond series including Daniela Bianchi (she was in "From Russia with Love'), as well as 2 others plus Bernard Lee as M and Lois Maxwell as Moneypenny.
