Agree. Helpful video. Enough for me to think of quote from Dirty Harry, "A man's got to know his limitations." It is now $300 to get the screen repaired by Nikon. But I could see a DIY mess coming if I tried myself. Thanks Carl. I know my limitations.
Got my camera back from Nikon. Worth the dosh. In the tech comments: "The camera was impacted, causing damage to its rear monitor. Furthermore, the bayonet mount was bent, so it had to be replaced. After this, the camera required a Nikon standard full adjustment." This repair would have been out of my league. I could not have put Humpty Dumpty back together again. [Kind of like when I took the family lawnmower into engine shop for a project and had to bring it home in a box of pieces, to my dad's displeasure. That lawnmower never did go back together again.] $297.50 feels like a reasonable price to get it all right again. 3rd party repair places (mostly wouldn't work on it and those that did) were only about $25 cheaper when postage was added. Better to go to Nikon for this one. I salute you Carl for publishing your own efforts and for scaring me off trying this myself!
there are two screws that release a clamp between the screen and the body that will free up the ribbon cable that tears easily. this will give you a little more wiggle room. the two ribbon clamps that need to be undone are tricky. the small one has a tan colored tab that you need to flick up. its tiny. the wide one has a veeery thin black tab that has to flick up to release. it's doable. i did it. a hot hairdryer eventually heated up the glue enough to pull the tearable ribbon cable off the lcd body. thanks for the post.
AHHHH, just made the same exact mistake!!! At least I'm in good company. I broke my screen a few weeks before you did (beginning of Oct 2020) and you hadn't posted yet. So I didn't think to look again when I finally got around to fixing the camera here at the end of December. It was only after looking for a replacement Flexible Cable FPC that I came across this video. For an extra bit of irony, I was recording the process to make my own repair video. Now to watch your other video on replacing the Flexible Cable FPC.
Hey Buddy! You would think some professional would have already posted a video to help us novice...but nope, lol. Sorry you didn't see my video before the, gotcha, got you. I hope you watched my second video to the end, I found a screw hidden under the tripod plate that I didn't know was there. Also, when I replaced the cable I ripped behind the screen I "did not" glue it back to the back of the screen like the other one was. Everything is working fine...good luck👍🏽.
Oops, almost did the same mistake myself - thnx for posting! I have the D500 and screen apart now, that black FPC cable still not broken however I haven't quite figured out how to remover the larger of the two white ribbon cables, @8:06 e.g. Should be able to fix it still, though, and hopefully not having to disassemble it all, like you did in the other video...
After replacing my d500 sreen and watching this video...which is really informative... i was watching for the ribon to tare when actualy it tore where the ribon meets the panel!!..theres hardly any room for error and yiu can barely see the part that tares!! on replacing the new screen didn't come with the sticky gasket seal so i used double sided tape but all fixed
Hey just wanted to give you a quick Update. I managed to change everything and the camera is perfectly working again! Wish i watched your video before i destroyed the cable... Thanks for this great helpful video! For everyone else watching, a hairdryer helps a lot removing the old glue. And listen to this man before you rip the cable apart ;)
Ah dude sorry! That's a bummer, it's still doable but you will have dig deeper into it now. You might want to watch my other video all the way through before trying the next attempt. I learned something their also.

Yelp that would have done the trick, lesson learned👍🏾. I did a second video on the install of everything, trial and error but got it done.

Hello, could you please tell me how i get the old lcd out of the nikon plastic frame?
I honestly don't know, and hope I never have to do this again. Good luck in your endeavor.
@@allabouthim03 Ok. I'll find a way! But thank you very much for the Videos anyway! Hope to get it fixed too!

just dropping by to say that I tore the exact same goddamn connector while watching your repair 😫

if you do som iPhone screens you know about this small cables traps ;)
man is this common with all nikon users
do the d500 and 850 have the same lcd
No I don't think so. The D500, D810, and D5 seems to share the same screen.
I appreciate the video but I am hearing two voice tracks at the time time?
Thank you, all this time I didn't know that the whole track didn't get muted🥴. To late now, I hope it helped anyway, sorry.
