It's YOUR railway Julian so whatever you say goes. There's always a few know it all's and rivet counters trying to upset the applecart. Just tell them to "Go forth and multiply" and carry on the way you are going. Your skills are amazing and - I must say as an ex-BR train driver - your lifelike reproductions of so many things are fantastically realistic within a railway setting. I wish I had your skills but I haven't so I happily settle for just watching the wonderful things you produce. Keep it going my friend and sod the moaners.
I agree Julian, it’s your layout and you should do what you want, I agree with your rant and enjoy all of your videos and wait with excitement for the next issue. Alan in UK
I absolutely love the layout that you were able to squeeze into your space. It allows for continuous running and switching. Its multi elevations and tunnels add interest. Now is it a believable layout, surly no, but that’s the whole point of the hobby. You work with the space and budget you have and you make the railroad yours. It’s simply for your enjoyment. Now hurrah for those with deep pockets that have the luxury large space and wish to adhere to true prototypical running. Not all of us are in that boat. For many of us this is a form of simple enjoyment to be able to build something that we can share are experiences. So for all the know-it-alls, keep the negative comments to yourselves. Julian, crack-on with your good work.
I think of railway modelling as impressionist art. You're recreating an impression of countryside and the buildings and infrastructure that sits within it, you're recreating the mood, the emotional response to abandoned structures and the way nature has started to reclaim them, the sense of purpose of arriving and departing trains... in spite of how we strive for detail and accuracy in some areas (e.g. locos), we are actually just dabbing paint on a canvas to convey a feeling.
Thank you that was a very thought provoking video. It reminded me that an area I think that is frequently overlooked about railway modelling is the popularity of railways with people on the autism spectrum. As the father of someone on the autism spectrum I can totally hear my son’s voice in some of the negative and critical comments that have turned up in response to your videos. If he sees or hears something he considers wrong about a special interest of his (things he is incredibly knowledgeable about) he feels compelled to correct the person and point out the error of their ways. It frequently comes across as very rude to anyone who doesn’t know him as his correction and “expert insight” is delivered without any of the social niceties that are generally used to deliver constructive criticism or question someone else’s work. I totally agree about rule one always being applicable and that people who deliberately agitate and criticise in comments sections are a real pain. Unfortunately I think that often negative comments that seem designed to annoy and agitate (particularly ones which go into considerable detail about the prototype) could plausibly have been posted in good faith by someone on the autism spectrum who doesn’t properly grasp how their comments will be viewed by others. It’s a really tricky one that is probably best either ignored totally or responded to with a polite, neutral, thank you I’ll consider that etc. If the post is from a deliberate agitator your response says “I’m not going to rise to the bait” but if it’s posted in good faith then it acknowledges the contribution while avoiding getting bogged down in a needless debate.
The bluebell railway spent millions when extending there line to East Grinstead , which included the removal of hundreds and hundreds of tons of rubbish that had filled the cutting under and around the road bridge. Just to let you know that back filling cuttings has defiantly😵 been done in the past to defunked cuttings 😂 .There's always the rivet counter and jealous people in all walks of life , keep up your great videos please, most of us do appreciate your skilled and fun videos thank you ....john
Hi Julian, it is your railway and you have what you want. I have followed many of your great tips and ways of doing things for my own layout and I am over the moon with what I have, it pleases me and that's the main thing. Keep up the good work.
Good job my l don't do a video about my own layout (ha ha) At the end of the day, it's your layout, it's what you want to incorporate, it's whatever colour grass you want to have, what colour of tarmac you want, how you want shops, houses, factories to appear etc. I'm only guessing here but I take it that no-one commented that in your original scenario the turn-out / point that was used for the line going into the tunnel was actually too tight. So the scene worked before you decided to change it? I think the whole 'model railway' tag speaks for itself, it's a model, it's make believe, can we have show of hands of modellers who run steam engines on their layouts without the use of electricity!!! For all of us not actually using steam to power our Flying Scotsman's, King classes, Paniers, Class 5's etc etc etc, shame on us!!! Anyone using cardboard or plastic to build houses, shops and so on? Why? Where is the evidence that such buildings were built from such materials? Indeed where is the factual photographic, diagrammatical evidence that BR ever ran a Class 37 built with a plastic body?? Ha ha Anyways, to all, just build your layout the way you want to and most importantly have fun with it
Agree with all the “rule 1” comments. Even if you DIDN’T do ANY research, who cares. Do as you wish! But I have a question: how did you get the expanding foam out of that fence without damaging the fence?
In the 2 1/2 years since I restarted modelling, I have found you and Charlie Bishop at Chadwick have been the best inspiration for making a believable and workable model railway. Ignore the trolls and keep on doing what you do.
Thanks for the video and your commitment so much of your experiences to all of us. I'm since now years touched by your progress and the development of your beautiful layout. Even if some decisions of change I might not have taken because I already loved how you modelled it in the first place I'm always even more amazed how you develop the scene even further. I love your modelworld and even more do not beleive I will ever be able to acheive even a glimpse of what you let us all have a share in by showing and explaining it to us. A big thank you and all the best, looking forward to many more brillant videos in the future. Best Albrecht
I would just like to say that I think your layout is marvellous, I personally don’t like card building only resin and plastic but you make it look amazing, please keep making your videos in your way because your keeping our hobby alive and inspiring people - thank you 👍
Just because something is unlikely, doesn't mean it's impossible. I follow many TH-camrs regarding our wonderful hobby but yours is one the ones | look forward to most. I find each episode entertaining, informative and inspiring so keep it up Julian, you're one of the best.
Those of use that follow you Julian know that you put your heart and soul into your modelling, you have more patience than me because if I got them sort of comments I think I would tell them people what I thought, good on you for replying and the modelling community would all wish we had more room to build (to scale) a `true like` build so modellers licence is nearly always used, well it is in my situation. Take care Julian and keep them coming from a rained out Dover in Kent, but your channel brings a ray of sun shine, cheers Barry..
TH-cam suggested this video to me, I've never watched any of your content before. It's your railway, do as you please. For what it's worth I like the damaged brickwork on the wall above the filled in tunnel mouth. A detail not often seen at all.
Well done, and Well said, Julian. It's your layout, and you build it how you want to. We are just Glad that you invited us to your Layout. Stay Strong, mate. All of us Ex Poms in W/A are behind you. Stay Safe, mate. Bill from WA
Hi Julian, what I love about this video is your honesty and your approach to keyboard warriors, they will always be out there and there’s nothing we can do about it. I always go by rule #1, it’s your railway and you model it as you see fit. There is an old torn up line near me and there are a few cuttings and tunnel entrances that have been back filled over the years so I don’t see anything wrong with what you are doing and your story that goes with it. I’m sure this debate will go on and on. Keep up the great videos.
Looking good Julian, I liked the look of your old branch line but agree you needed the longer platforms and you have your branch line the other end, a confession here I "pinched" your idea of the dead end tunnels to make it look like my "terminus" is a "through" station. And there are many examples of filled in tunnels etc and I'm sure many more of your viewers and subscribers love what you do than those"haters" who probably let their own thoughts on perfection get in the way of creating an enjoyable layout for themselves and others to enjoy like you do. Many thanks for sharing your efforts.
I admire anyone willing to put their work on a channel like this because I know there will always be people who have to be negative. If someone doesn’t like what you are doing, they should just unsubscribe, but they can’t. They have to stick around and tell you what you are doing wrong. Keep having fun with it.
You do a great job Julian, just keep on enjoying yourself and ignore the negative comments. They probably don’t even have a layout. Cheers Peter from across the ditch. (If I was to accurately represent the 1500m plus interstate trains that run in Australia I would need 17m long model trains)
What you have modelled with the tunnel is correct I know of a few locally that are a good example. I love your channel honesty and informative. But the bottom line it’s your railway you can do what you like. Thank you for being so honest.
Julian, I can't understand those who commented on your lack of research. I'd say that you were very studious at this. Those bridge abutments, in particular, look most effective. Sometimes folks forget that a model is a simplified structuring of reality. Keep on what you're doing...
It’s a brilliant layout and your right you can do what you like just because you can’t fit every detail and thing in the space you have doesn’t mean it’s not realistic real life isn’t perfect and therefore the model world doesn’t need to be perfect either. You’ve done an excellent job and are continuing to do an excellent well done. Keep up the good work.
Of course no model railway can be absolutely true to life. You've shown us often enough the excellent reference photos you use to get the right 'feel' of the railway. And it's all coming together superbly. Well done, Julian.... you're on the right track! :)
Hi Julian, Rule no1 applies. The back fill looks interesting, and it has a story. Railway modelling is an escape and a chance to let our imaginations loose. I can spend hours watching and listening to your channel. Keep it up please. Forgive me, but Helm's Deep is evoked... Cheers.
Your model, your rules, always. One piece of narrative you could use for the filled tunnel is the Aberfan disaster in 1966 resulted in mining spoil heaps across the UK being drastically reduced in height to prevent such a horrible thing occurring again. A lot of the spoil was dumped into valleys and old cuttings, etc. Some of that spoil could well have gone to fill in that tunnel.
This is your world, Julian, so make it as you want . In my model making and my painting, the creative elements make it more interesting. Your layout is a continuous evolution process, and it is enjoyable to watch as I have done over the years. Those kinds of negative comments by others is often the factor in discouraging people from starting into the hobby or ending it. The words of bob ross stay with me every time I begin a project, " this is your world"
Good on ya (bad attempt at an accent) for responding to the comments. Yes I support your reasoning it's a model so you can only snap shot different scenes and features without having unlimited space. In the model railway world unless you are a millionaire we all have limitations. I have a 8ft x 6ft layout with buildings cut in half so I can fit them in at all that's not realistic or happens in the real world.!!! end of statement. Keep doing what you do Julian.
Whatever the rivet counters say, there's almost always a prototype for everything. Well ... except my modelling scenario, which is really, really going to piss off the nasal "I think you'll find ..." rivet counters, as (when I get domestic planning permission granted) my next layout is going to take advantage of British TT:120 for the first time ever being the same scale as its European equivalent, and will be set on a Brigadoon-like Doggerland, representing a junction between British railways, German railways, and a disused line to Denmark. God, the critics will explode with apoplexy!
Hi Julian. Firstly, I would never deny a modeller's right to do whatever s/he wants on his/her model railway layout - first rule of modelling - Rule 1 applies (yes, I know that doesn't make sense!). I can't remember whether I made a comment on the backfill, and if I did, I hope I didn't offend. I never though of the subsidence, etc., reason for the backfill, so thanks for the info!
An interesting little thought provoker Julian. I for one will continue to observe and enjoy the changing dynamics of the layout. Why not run a HST around just to annoy the stick-in-the-muds?🤣👍👍
If you look up the phenomenon of "sealioning", that is what is going on. It's a problem in discourse, especially on the internet. In this particular case, I like what you're up to, which is why I watch. You do research, you do think carefully, and that makes for an interesting video.
Grief! Every model railway is a compromise to reality, even those like Pete Waterman’s ‘Leamington’ which recreate actual buildings. The physical topography of your layout is far more realistic and plausible than very many other layouts, including some of the most well-known on TH-cam. Carry on Julian and don’t waste your time on responding to nonsense.
It's rule one, but to be honest, I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out. If it is anything, if it is like the rest of your work, it will look great. It is rare that normally write comments, but carry on with the great work.
Hi Julian, I would imagine there are many ocations in the full size world where reallignment of track has resulted in disused tunnels, cuttings etc. So for one to be filled in to me would not seem out of the question. So you filling in the front of the old tunnel does not seem to be not unreasonable. Thinks it looks great with the top of the portal showing. Keep up the great modelling. You are an insperation to myself who lives across the other side of the ditch.
I have seen bricked up tunnel portals for sure. Can't place any filled in cuttings, although I imagine one must exist somewhere. It's your decision to fill it in, and it's your railway.
Julian I don't know about tunnels but they do back fill where a roadway crosses over the abandoned right of way; because that is what they did in Jackson Tennessee USA.
If anyone told me that I had to research the road, I would have said to them that they could just muck off. It is my road and I will build it any way i want. Forget the problem people!!!
Haha Julian. I didn't like the filling of the tunnel entrance to be fair. But it is your layout and only you can decide what is right for the direction you want. You are way more accurate with your detail than I am. This is a Hobby to be enjoyed. Happy Modelling Mon
Really upset the rivet counters - the tunnel was filled in to hide a train loaded with gold ! 😂 It’s your layout and you do want you want. There are loads of reasons the tunnel could be blocked up, land slips, dumping of spoil from track realignments etc. Highways England filling in unstable bridges i.e Musgrave Bridge lol. When people say that couldn’t have happened, you can usually find some anomalies which prove them wrong in the real world! GWR Pannier tanks in Scotland anyone ? - it happened! Great Model keep up the good work👍 Drewton tunnel Hull and Barnsley railway - tunnel closed in 1958 - mouth buried by land slip !
It seems to me that if they don't like what you're doing then perhaps they better go elsewhere for viewing. Although it's highly likely that their "raison d'etre" is merely to be antagonistic. Please keep doing what you're doing as it gives great pleasure to the majority. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Hi Julian, I enjoy your channel immensely, and thank you for sharing your progress and the joy therein. The only right way of building a layout is YOUR way, frankly everybody else can go f*@< themselves. Just a note on the backfilled tunnel, as someone who has done a lot of mass earthworks in my working life, it's likely the grass will be a slightly different shade than the surrounding fields - if that is of use! Thanks again, Dan.
It's the nature of Trolls , just don't engage, I also believe that there is always a prototype for almost everything, anyway I love seeing your videos and your layout , given me a lot of pleasure over.a difficult time of my life , all the best Julian 🌈🙏💞
Good for you Julian, As you say its all about compression, if there's a feature you think will add interest to your railway without overpowering to overall look, go for it. Those who take it too literally obviously don't model themselves and have no imagination. Mark
When I first saw the tunnel, I thought it would look good with a metal fence/gate, like so many around the country - possibly used as a storage during the world disagreement of the late 1930's. However, you'd kind of finished off the backfill before the end of the first video. But when I saw examples of subsided backfilled tunnel entrances, I figure it actually looks good as a representative example of real life.
I’ll tell you what Julian, I love your layout, and also your videos. I am a great admirer of your skills. Stick a few dinosaurs on the layout Julian … that’ll wind the trolls up … You’re not alone mate, I’ve seen many TH-camrs having to deal with this kind of negativity. Just ignore it Julian. By giving this type of negativity our attention we inadvertently feed it and the protagonist.
Julian, remembering that rule 1 always applies. Besides did you really want the faff of digging out the in fill? Where on your layout would you put the spoil - how many train loads would it have taken to remove it? As to doing enough research, you did fall down a bit on that score. If your research had been more thorough we wouldn't have been treated to that humorous carbuncle of foam! Keep on modelling. Enjoy your videos.
Hi Julian . Its your railway and its what ever you want or do , I have had a couple of bad comments as well . i just ignore or delete them or reply its my layout and i will do what i want . I always watch your channel even though i don't always comment , well done. regards Greg
Hello, just to continue, the story, 😊you made a mistake with the foam, and put it right! The only people that don’t make mistakes usually never do anything. I think you have made the bridge and tunnel fine and I once did similar years ago, so I must admit, I did expect the “Blob”. Love the channel, please carry on and show us the outcome………… TonyH
Your railway is great inspiration to many a modeller, including me, and yes ultimately it is your railway! It is a bit of snobbishness in the hobby that I think acts as a blocker to many enjoying and sharing the hobby because there is always one know it striving for accuracy. Its a made up world after all!
Every model is never correct in whatever the scale. Whether it's tanks, boats or railways. You could never get everything right as it is in the real world. It's your railway and you can do what ever you want on it. If you did Southern railway signals with a great western good shed, and a north British signal box and a northern station building. That your prerogative and no one else's.
Dear Julian, would like to say that your view on and reply to the antagonistic comments is excellent. Rule 1 is indeed that it is your layout. Whatever the underlying reasoning for the commentator, that’s what people most often tend to forget. Whatever happened with the particular tunnel infills after they were abandoned. Does it indeed matter? In that sense the particular comment should have ended at the historical aspect. The branch lining into the disparaging of doing no research, on your part, is totally unnecessary and inappropriate. As a frequent viewer I can only say that it is totally untrue. You always share and show your research and even add as to why you choose a particular scenic element to show up on your layout, and most often inform us viewers when something which may seem essential from the true to scale world example isn’t gonna show up in the scene. On the particular scene in more detail; when such a short cutting and tunnel would exist in the real world, and indeed the surrounding area would be prone to subsidence, this area would indeed be filled in. More strongly put, leaving the cutting towards the tunnel would put a lot of stress on the surrounding ground without proper continuous maintenance. Just for the sake of modeling lessons, the fact that the former tunnel trajectory had a too small radius for the track, and a too steep elevation, I humbly think the way you incorporated the remnants of the tunnel is very appropriate. Yes, it’s a freelance solution, but heck where’s the rivet counter when the shoveling needs to be done? Cheerio
Keyboard warriors I am afraid who have probably never have or never will build a model railway. The fact that you have a back storey helps the development of your layout
I think what you're doing is amazing, but backfilled tunnels aren't a thing if you're doing British rail stock, most tunnels are either bricked up or just outright abandoned there are very VERY few that were intentionally filled, but many of remnants of the tunnel would be removed. but what you're doing is amazing and I love your videos.
There have been plenty of back fills in the UK post-Beeching, to reclaim land. Also, as someone else said, the Bluebell Railway "unfilled" one! A couple of channels that I subscribe to, have had to resort to turning off Comments, due to "obnoxious/rude/argumentative" Trolls. You are going to get all-sorts, unfortunately. As others say, it is YOUR layout, and while constructive criticism and suggestions can be helpful, contentious arguments, not so much.
You always find these experts never show there brilliance on there own youtube channel, Armchair critics, shame we can`t chew the fat at Gets this year, Lol
Heck Yeah it exists! In fact the next state over from where I live Abandons both Highway and Railway/Railroad Tunnels, Because that state likes to waste money and is a waste of money. That state is called Pennsylvania, and how they get away with it is the real mystery!
Well said. Its your layout model it how u want. Rivet counters dont have youtube channels usually... they may complain but lets see them show there modeling. !!!!! I see layouts running all sorts of stuff. I have a apt that should have catenary but i dont plan to install it. !! I removed the masts and Maybe my apt is a new test with a diesel engine!!! Its not real but so what. I want to run that loco and i dont care lol. 😂
Obviously you have researched, a photo proves that. Did you ask to see a photo of the rivet counters layout? Good use of the word bollocks by the way 😀
We have examples of this in NZ, after WWII, Wellington hill that has the prison on top. and in Britain tunnels where back filled when rail ways were done with Typical Rivet counters who jus have to moan. This person needs to show his railway, if he has one or are they couch modelers. Stand your grounnd.
There's a prototype for everything, further to that, Rule 1 etc, and above all; it's a hobby, it's supposed to be fun. Perhaps some people need to relax a little...
These people need to learn rule number 1. It is my railway, I will build it as I want it to be. These Rivet counters and keyboard warriors need to get another life. Martin, (Thailand)
Not seen the comments you refer to in this video, but it sounds like the first one, at least, is probably on the autistic spectrum, and can't help the way they see the world (real or model) or communicate their thoughts. Not all of us are the same, and you have to allow for the 'OCS' traits that some others may exhibit.
Logically there is no answer to these people because the layout is fictional, nothing exists it is all fictitious I would not reply to these people you certainly don’t have to justify your decisions,
I absolutely love your attitude about Model RR. All you can do is make the videos you enjoy and your real followers will respond, everyone else is not worth your time or energy.....Cheers and crack on, my friend....🤜🤛
Just ignore people you don't want to hear. I will add though; dissenters are good for learning and conversation as they break up echo chambers with conflicting ideas.
It's YOUR railway Julian so whatever you say goes. There's always a few know it all's and rivet counters trying to upset the applecart. Wonderfully expressed and explained, Julian. Railway modelling is a work of 3D art, and yours ranks as a masterpiece in my eyes.

Hi Julian Brilliant Video and you managed to say the word bollocks , I'm still laughing
Good video Julian, there are always people that can’t help themselves and comment in a negative way
Leave comments that are constructive, not destructive!!
Yeah, my thoughts exactly
Of course no model railway can be absolutely true to life. You've shown us often enough the excellent reference photos you use to get the right 'feel' of the railway. And it's all coming together superbly. Well done, Julian.... you're on the right track! :)
Just go on! You're doing a remarkable job and I enjoy watching your channel. We can't satisfy everyone and why should we even try.
Modelling is always a balance between realism and plausibility. It's always up to us modellers to make that balance.
I love all of your construction work on your Railway.I real y do learn from it all. Thank you
Excellent video Julian and excellent modelling, keep up the great work 👍🏼
Keep, doing what you do best Julian! 👍👏
At the end of the day "It's Your Railway" If it makes you happy, great
Love your videos and layout.
Rule 1 your railway, most model railways have comprises, my layout is totally fictional so I can do what I like, keep up the great videos 👍
Great video as usual, well said fully agree with all you have said.
Happy Modelling
Mon
You are doing alright Julian. Keep it up
Really upset the rivet counters - the tunnel was filled in to hide a train loaded with gold ! Great Model keep up the good work👍
Drewton tunnel Hull and Barnsley railway - tunnel closed in 1958 - mouth buried by land slip !
Good for you Julian,
As you say its all about compression, if there's a feature you think will add interest to your railway without overpowering to overall look, go for it.
Sorry to hear the criticisms. I like it. Although is Sculptamould prototypical? That wouldn’t have been used irl. Oooh….
As already stated. RULE ONE. you're doing a fantastic job.
great vlog on channel layout looks good thanks lee
Great job rule one applies and I’ll say brilliant railway 👍👍♈️
Every model is never correct in whatever the scale. Whether it's tanks, boats or railways. You could never get everything right as it is in the real world. It's your railway and you can do what ever you want on it. If you did Southern railway signals with a great western good shed, and a north British signal box and a northern station building. That your prerogative and no one else's.
Rivet counters! Don't tell them the elephant in the room, the track gauge is wrong.
Cheerio
Back fill could have been a land slide
Keyboard warriors I am afraid who have probably never have or never will build a model railway. The fact that you have a back storey helps the development of your layout
Never mind the Bo!!♡cks Julian. Keep calm and carry on. 👍
But but - your imaginary world doesn't match my personal vision~! Hahaha. I like how it looks. Keep on happily modelling
Hello from the UK 🇬🇧
Julian, your layout, do as you please.
Course not
Heck Yeah it exists!
It would be interesting to see the negative commenters' own layouts, always assuming they have one of course.
Logically there is no answer to these people because the layout is fictional, nothing exists it is all fictitious I would not reply to these people you certainly don’t have to justify your decisions,
Rule one Julian Rule one.😇😇😇
I absolutely love your attitude about Model RR. All you can do is make the videos you enjoy and your real followers will respond, everyone else is not worth your time or energy.....Cheers and crack on, my friend....🤜🤛
Just ignore people you don't want to hear. I will add though; dissenters are good for learning and conversation as they break up echo chambers with conflicting ideas.
Sounds like some people forget about rule 1 mate or don’t give a monkeys about it just don’t let sad petty people get to u it’s ur layout so u do u
Well said Julian, another nerd put in there place 🤣
Just keep doing what you're doing Julian. Absolutely love your videos. You are an incredible artist and modeller. All the best, Martin
