Did not expect such a brilliant talk and only 30min in. Been a while since I listened to such a deep vedantic talk, beautiful how the professor combined Advaita and bhakti while also mentioning his personal life issues. Gives me that sense of "realness" whenever we face those deep, "real" life experiences. Thank you. Jai Sri ramamkrishna, Jai swami vivekananda. 🙏
I have just always loved listening to Dr Timalsina. His earlier discourses too have been SO honest, real, and just connects with me. Thank you to Vedanta Society and to Dr Timalsina.
Very beautifully presented the syncretic view of Vedanta + Smarta philosophy. Bengalis, for one, generally follow both these streams together not finding any paradox in it. Thanks to Sri Ramakrishna & many others before him. Only Vedanta seems dry and pointless just as only Tantra seems to be powerful and uncontrolled. Their unity brings together peace and power in life.
Kudos and thanks to VSNY for bringing us this thought-provoking lecture by Prof. Timalsina who is not only a gifted scholar of tantric studies but also an ordained tantric acharya. While I appreciated all that was presented, especially his emphasis on the importance of devotion in our sadhana, I was particularly intrigued by the following observation by Prof Timalsina around 22:46. Questioning the validity of the Advaita Vedanta proclamation that changelessness is our true nature, he declared that change was his nature by asserting “I am changing”. For an online student of Vedanta like me, the assertion “I am changing” seems to not only contradict the shruti (Upanishads) but also reason (yukti) and direct experience (anubhava). First, reason dictates that if change were our nature, then our assessment of the logical soundness of the conclusion “I am changing” is subject to change as well. This implies that we cannot be certain of the logical soundness of that conclusion since we may view it as being sound at one time and unsound at another time. Second, experientially, the assertion “I am changing” cannot be made by any of us without the presence of the “I am” cognition which underlies the expression of any thought. Further, our ordinary experience informs us that our “I am“ cognition, when present, is the same now as it was at any time in our past and remains unchanging. Since no expression of thought or perception of change is possible without our unchanging “I am” cognition, the assertion “I am changing” is contradicted by our experience. Thus, as I see it, the assertion “I am changing” is untenable both logically and experientially. Of course, I recognize that Prof Timalsina completed a PhD focused on Advaita Vedanta and, hence, it would be presumptuous of me to question his knowledge of this subject. Admittedly, my arguments above may be flawed and, therefore, I welcome any critique identifying flaws in them.
The "I Am" is always changeless. Shiva , the great pristine primordial consciousness, remains unattached, unwavering under the feet of Mother. All the change that is in Prakriti has as its basis, the Karpur Gauram Chest of Shiva as it's Footholder. The Ekoham is thus the basis of Bahishyamaha
May be in english language we need two I's (like eyes)....can we make peace by telling "i am changing" in the backdrop of "I am", wherein ocean is the big I and waves are the small i's...?
Jai ma ! U are amazing this was divine intervention for me to watch you ! We are knowing known and knower all is display of conciousness and Kali is shakti
Half way through and stopped to comment. This was a much needed talk for me. I have always thought about these paradoxes. On the one hand Advaita Vedanta talks about how desire as the source of unhappiness and then in some q&a swami sarvapriyananda said that desire is not wrong and that you cannot do away with it. There are several such paradoxes like how does one reconcile having known about the Brahman, the existence of some many gods? Swamiji's lecture is trying to address these paradoxes as he himself said in the beginning. This is what I love and lovingly hate about Indic philosophical discourse, it claims to solve all your problems(and it does) but then you get an alternate point of view and it wrecks your entire understanding. Perhaps there cannot be any respite from paradoxes. Perhaps paradoxes are to be accepted and understood.
The Vedantic And Tantric Understanding Is that If your desires are based in A feeling of lack Then you are not recognizing your essential nature As Fullness. If your desires are for Your Spiritual upliftment And for Service of humanity Then there is no conflict because The only Problem is when Believe that The fulfillment of all wants and desires Will bring us peace and joy. Both traditions tell us That When we recognize our true essential nature And abide as that Then we can enjoy All that life offers as well as offering Our love and service to others Because we will not get caught in design desires and Misidentifying Who we truly are.
1:06:30 Once when Swamiji explained the concept of Kali to Sister Nivedita, she thought it over and told Swamiji that she thinks Kali is the dream of Shiva. At this Swamiji smiled and said, "You think it is so? Let that be".
Jai Ma Jai Ma Jai Ma Jai Sri Ramakrishna Paramahangsha Dev, Jai Ma Sarada Devi, Jai Sri Vivekananda Thakur, Jai Sri Sarvapriyananda Maharaj, Jai all the Swamiji of Ramakrishna Math o Mission
I wish Swami Sarvapriyananda was in attendance to balance/integrate the two sides and bring a better understanding in a way we are used to through his simplified approach! No disrespect to the erudite professor but the topic being less familiar, it needs some SSP processing to understand better in my opinion.
you just need to familiarise yourself more with it that's all. it has nothing to do with who could be presenting the topic, but the contents must be digested anyway
Vedanta and our great Rishis have never told seekers to walk away from householder life. The great souls like Ramana Maharishi encourage you to be with your family and perform your duties. Just don’t be overly attached. I hope you calibrate that aspect of your talk. 🙏🏼🌺🪷
This is so amazing, nobody can speak like this, 🌸

Beautiful 🙏. Professor’s lecture c Complements so well with non duality lectures of Swami Sarvapriyananda 🙏
It is interesting how our hypocritical moralism judges even the Divine. In the end we also urge for expansion. Thank you Acharya ji
