Kind of, I intended to use small magnets not to rotates in normal condition. but they were so weak to hold the body. I chose the wooden rod for the purpose instead.

In the movie, they never actually made this locket. They used two different lockets, hence why the photo could be in the very middle without ripping.
I think the picture inside would be ripped in half.
So pre-rip it (cut it to size) so they can move along with the locket..

I think your guess is right. those magnets mounted on the central base are holding lids so that there will be no gap.
