Just went on vacation to Key West, Florida over new years. My first flight from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Atlanta, Georgia was on an MD-90. From what I read online, there are only 16 of them left in service now and all 16 are owned by Delta. The last new one being produced in 2000. This one must have been much older than that though because it still had ashtrays up near the lavatory and inside the lavatory lol. I may have just flown on the oldest remaining MD-90 in service lol.
I think the MD-90 is the most attractive of the DC-9 family, mostly due to its longest length and largest engines. Just like an A340-600 is more attractive than A340-300, or DC-8 Super 70 looks better than any earlier DC-8. Long is beautiful! (I doubt anyone ever called an A310, 747SP, 737-200/500/600, or A318/319 "beautiful"...)

Planeman 789 Jersey.C.I.
The 717 is not related to the MD90 in any way except for a common lineage to the original DC-9. The 717 is based off the basic DC-9 (being about the size of a DC-9-41) while the MD90 is based on the later DC-9-80 series (which has an extended wing and horizontal stabilizer). The 717/MD95 borrows the vertical stabilizer and tailcone from the MD87, but that's about it. Boeing did in fact market the 717/MD95 heavily, but it was a decade or so ahead of its market (interestingly enough, the few that were produced are in high demand now).
Another thing that brings back memories to open up the engines on an empty 90 you needed a pump to open up the trust reverser cores MD-80s We’re so much easier to forward lower cowling was just hand latches the aft lower County you used to 3/8 drive wobble socket thanks for this video brings back memories it’s been over 20 years since I worked on one of these funny how some of that stuff comes back I could probably go on forever but I don’t want to bore you people once again thank you for listening to my comments
I grew up near Rochester New York. The DC-9s MD-80s Boeing 727s were the main birds at the airport back in the days of old...Now it's CRJ-700s CRJ-900s E-175s, E-190s and sometimes an A320 or a Boeing 737 might show up.
You forgot about the Allegheny BAC 1-11s flying to Rochester. Later bought by USAIR, they looked a lot like a DC-9 except no eyebrow windows on the cockpit. Loved all those planes.
Let's face it, the MD90 is the airplane that they ought to have brought to market in 1979. Instead, while everyone else was switching to high-bypass turbofans, MacDac opted to stick to leaky turbojets.
You're right, of course, under the regs it's not a turbojet as it doesn't use the gas flow to provide usable thrust. I'm going to assume that when I wrote that, I was in the middle of a brain fart or a beer (possibly both). Although, it should be added that the turbofan is technically defined by the FAA as a subclass of turbojet, albeit with a bypass duct. Aren't the regulatory agencies fun? ;) All in good fun, of course!
Another great aircraft. This and the Boeing 727 are my favourite. I would always request a seat by the engines when i flew one of those. Noting like the intense roar of the engine a few feet from my ears. Sweet music and some great memories. The music and footage make that aircraft look so damn sexy.
I traveled once on board the MD 90, in winter , it was a scary trip in stormy weather especially when I noticed it's strange tiny wings, it recalled me the widows maker Starfighter 101, I said never again.....
I love all of the McDonnell Douglas, Boeing and Lockheed promotional videos that you have posted. I have spent many hours watching your exceptional collection of videos and I hope to see more in the future. One question that I did have for you: Have you ever considered making a playlist of just promotional videos for each manufacturer? I would love to see any and all videos that you have for the L-1011 TriStar. My grandfather was one of tye engineers who designed the TriStar and I have always been fascinated by that aircraft. If you have any more Lockheed videos, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could post them in a dedicated playlist! :-)
Hi Peter, thanks so much for writing, and the good words! I actually have been playing around with various playlist ideas. I only built the "Airliner Promo Films" playlist about a month ago, and the entries are alphabetical. I will consider your idea, breaking it up into manufacture or airline. just not sure I have enough of 'em to warrant a playlist for each individual manufacture, but I will certainly consider it. I will have a dilemma when/if "More Classic Jetliners" fills up, because obviously, I can't call a playlist, "Even More Classic Jetliners", LOL. I suppose it should be "Classic Jetliners 1", "Classic Jetliners 2", etc, or broken down by aircraft or airline type, but on some vids, there are multiple types and airlines featured. But I'll think on this, for sure. You Tube allows 200 vids per playlist, then you have to start a new one, or "Part 2", as it were.
Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture Thanks for replying to my message so fast...I wasn't expecting to hear back so soon! As I mentioned previously, I would be thrilled to see more L-1011 stuff....it wasn't until after my grandfather died that I learned about his work with the L-1011 TriStar and all of the engineering and technology that went into what became a truly supreme aircraft. In any case...please don't hesitate to contact me should you happen to come across any further Lockheed videos! Best Regards; Peter
I've got a family history with the L-1011 also, just an incredible bird, vastly superior to the DC-10, which I loved to fly in also. If only Lockheed could have gone with a small 100-120 seater to compete with the DC-9 and 737 to supplement the sales of the L-1011, providing the steady flow of $$$ needed to keep developing larger transports. In Boeings case it was the 727 that paid the way for the 747 program and later the 737.
It would be intresting if boeing raised the landing gear, elonginated the fuselage, and with new engines made an economical 4th generation of the DC-9. They would really have to add some redundencies for that jackscrew though probably.
Such a beatifull plane. Shame Mcdonell douglas has gone forever and Boeing didnt continue the MD-11 and MD80 with more technology, new engines, new avionics, extended range, low emisions. Making a flying whale pointlees, bigger than a 747 or a 777 has no sense. Embraer has taken all the market fro regional Jets with quality and of course good prices and low manteniance. But MD90 was the perfect warrior for this market, with the experience of MANY decades of building planes, with erros, like every manufacturers, error that are not likely to happen again making this airframes top reliable and dependable.
38911bytefree Same, My father actually worked on the MD-11. I once read though that the aircraft wasn't all that fuel efficient and it was cheaper to operate a different aircraft like a 777, 767, or A330
The MD-90 could have been a real winner if it was built with a larger faster wing. I wished the super strech MD-90-40 was built, it would have been a cool plane.
This is a very cool plane. The pilots love them because it's all mechanical. I love them cuz they are quiet. I fly in business class and it dam near feels like a glider. The engines are way way way the hell back there. lol
If they had come out with this jet in 1988 and added some winglets, we may have had MD jets around today. Though really they should have added the cfm56 to the original md80 as they came about in the mid 70s.
My first flight ever was in 2004-05 on American Airlines. The pamphlets in the back of the seats said "Super 80". I wonder if I was flying on an MD-80 or an MD-90. Same thing honestly. I hate flying and will never do it again. But I will always have a special place for the Mad Dogg.
We had touchscreens in the 1980's, see the HP-150 computer for example. People thought it was more intuitive and natural, but turns out holding your hand in front of the screen for long periods sucks and the mouse won.
Wow! As a huge MD-90 fan I say what a great find! Thanks. :-) Delta heralded this aircraft as its plane for the 21st Century in 1992. McDonnell Douglas did not make it into the 21st Century, but the MD-90 flies on, a testament to the aircraft and its maker.
"Historians would later note that McDonnell Douglas' failure to adapt the music in its promo films to the post-1980s world would ultimately lead to the company's untimely demise."

It is a shame that Boeing didn't continue to market and really sell the MD-90 alongside its little brother, the MD-95/717. Together they make up the third generation of DC-9, even though they don't share common engines. If a customer wanted airplanes that would last a long time, no airliners live on through more cycles and hours than the DC-9 family. Plus that 5-wide seating configuration has always been popular with a lot of people. I think the MD-90 and 717 would've sold consistently at least through 2010 without disturbing the 737 Next Gen, if Boeing chose to pursue their sales. One might point out that 717 sales petered out early even though they were actively marketed, but having only one stand-alone variant is a tough sell, with no fleet commonality to offer. I'm sure the 717 would have sold better also if MD-90 hadn't ended as soon as 717 began.
When the first 717-200’s were being delivered, there was already plans for a 717-300 that had a stretched fuselage for more seats, an aft galley service door on the left, a larger center tank additional range, a wider wingspan like the MD 80/90 varieties. It was canceled because Boeing already had the 737-700 with comparable capacity.
carnyboy04 The 717 is actually the MD95 a md project released by Boeing in 1998 it is a modified and modernized DC9-30 they have RR BR715 engines instead of PW engines and has a range of 3815 KM for the 717-200 hight gross weight.

Loved the MD80/90 better than any 737
The DC-9s/MD-80s were favourites of SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) back in the days. I flew quite a few trips on those.
Those tail-engines are awesome! It just makes sense.... keep noise back, weight back, and weight off the wings
Who else watching this after the last MD-90 got retired?
I grew up near Rochester New York. The DC-9s MD-80s Boeing 727s were the main birds at the airport back in the days of old...Now it's CRJ-700s CRJ-900s E-175s, E-190s and sometimes an A320 or a Boeing 737 might show up.
You forgot about the Allegheny BAC 1-11s flying to Rochester. Later bought by USAIR, they looked a lot like a DC-9 except no eyebrow windows on the cockpit. Loved all those planes.
The CRJ is similar in design to the DC-9/MD-80/MD-90/B717; it has the engines in the rear of the fuselage.
The music is so 90's
The style is so 90's
This is the most 90's thing.
What an aircraft and the video is so 90's i was 12 when this promo video was made wow memories
So retro!! I never knew the MD-90 had the same engines as the A320 (IAE V2500s)!
Yes all our Aegean Air A320 have this engines as well with last MD9x production
@Kaitlyn Olson, the MD-90 continued the design legacy of the DC-9 and later MD-80.
I still believe that someone will look back at this project and redesign it as a new aircraft 🙂
Md-90 is the best twinjet
1:13 God those engines are huge from this angle!
I miss MD-90 4:57
@WC3POchannel10A, Delta now also flies the Boeing 717, formerly the MD-95.
0:18 is so amazing, Boeing doesn't stand a chance! Oh wait...
Let's face it, the MD90 is the airplane that they ought to have brought to market in 1979. Instead, while everyone else was switching to high-bypass turbofans, MacDac opted to stick to leaky turbojets.
Todd Burleson I don't think you understand what the term "leaky turbojet" means. It's pejorative slang for a low-bypass turbofan.
Todd Burleson And if you want to split hairs, the GTCP85 is most definitely not a turbofan - and every DC-9 has one.
ErickC Not to also split hairs but the GTCP85 is a gas turbine. So Todd Burleson statement that the DC-9 never had turbojets is correct.
Aren't the regulatory agencies fun? ;)
All in good fun, of course!
Shame on Boeing for killing this aircraft
McDonnell Douglas had nice looking planes, but the MD-90 was technological inferior to the A320 which came out 7 years earlier
I think boeing still has the design for the 717. If they wanted to break into the regional market, they could make a 4th generation of this airframe.
Another great aircraft. This and the Boeing 727 are my favourite. I would always request a seat by the engines when i flew one of those. Noting like the intense roar of the engine a few feet from my ears. Sweet music and some great memories. The music and footage make that aircraft look so damn sexy.
actually, there was not any MD-90 flying
I miss the MD-90 and Mcdonelldouglas
I traveled once on board the MD 90, in winter , it was a scary trip in stormy weather especially when I noticed it's strange tiny wings, it recalled me the widows maker Starfighter 101, I said never again.....
*extends gear at 20K feet*
Another Gem! thank you. I don't think anyone minds the videos of the newer jets
As I mentioned previously, I would be thrilled to see more L-1011 stuff....it wasn't until after my grandfather died that I learned about his work with the L-1011 TriStar and all of the engineering and technology that went into what became a truly supreme aircraft. In any case...please don't hesitate to contact me should you happen to come across any further Lockheed videos! Best Regards;
Peter
I've got a family history with the L-1011 also, just an incredible bird, vastly superior to the DC-10, which I loved to fly in also. If only Lockheed could have gone with a small 100-120 seater to compete with the DC-9 and 737 to supplement the sales of the L-1011, providing the steady flow of $$$ needed to keep developing larger transports. In Boeings case it was the 727 that paid the way for the 747 program and later the 737.
The downside to MD 90 is row 39 has no window😡
Hi, would love to see the MD-95 film, thank you for thinking of me.
Boeing had no reason to continue the MD11 and MD80/90 series when they had the 737 747 and on top of that the 777 at the time on the way
I know, just a wish.
38911bytefree Same, My father actually worked on the MD-11. I once read though that the aircraft wasn't all that fuel efficient and it was cheaper to operate a different aircraft like a 777, 767, or A330
We will have the COMAC ARJ21, Hopefully a brand new MD ... built in china
Juan Gil xD
Meh, I'm not a big fan of rip off aircraft...
Really a pretty aircraft and gorgeous design.
The best design of airliner ever made. Sinve MD-90-40 was never built.
The music of our time may have changed, but the beauty of this aircraft and its design have not.
Most 90’s music to ever exist, very nice plane though.

Great vid, one of my favourite aircraft.
And the music is lit AF too.
Big Thanks for this upload!!!
The MD-90 could have been a real winner if it was built with a larger faster wing. I wished the super strech MD-90-40 was built, it would have been a cool plane.
Very modern for the epoch. $$$
New:
-Touchscreen
-V2500IAE engines
This is a very cool plane. The pilots love them because it's all mechanical. I love them cuz they are quiet. I fly in business class and it dam near feels like a glider. The engines are way way way the hell back there. lol
If they had come out with this jet in 1988 and added some winglets, we may have had MD jets around today.
Though really they should have added the cfm56 to the original md80 as they came about in the mid 70s.
Awesome vid! Nostalgic for the cheesy 80s/90s music! :)
Did I just see a touchscreen thing inside the plane?
Time Traveler evidence?
Isaac Babb Touchscreens were a thing in the 90s; they were just a special-purpose, niche product
@@Appleboy78165 Still VERY rare to see a small LCD color touch screen even as late as the mid 2000s...
that must have cost a fortune at the time.
Music is perfect just like that plane.
Love the music.
Music you can dance to....Let's do the McDonnell Douglas shuffle lol
+erik riggs Yea! Woop it Douglas style!
0:03 to 3:03 what soundtrack is that one ?
Hi, says, "De Wolfe Music Library-Stadium House-De Wolfe Music"
Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture Thanks Buddy, i like that music.
A very horrible one and annoying
"Historians would later note that McDonnell Douglas' failure to adapt the music in its promo films to the post-1980s world would ultimately lead to the company's untimely demise."
I think it's not bad at all. It's kine of EDM-emey, but not dub-step in it, thanks goodness. I quite like the track.
i miss this plane :(
Best job I ever had! ~ I sure miss McDonnell Douglas, we should've never sold out to Boeing!
They still exist as a Boeing With Douglas Logo
Kinda sad that the MD-90 did poor with sales. It was one of, if not, one of the last aircraft of once a leader in commercial aviation.
The 90 was the shit been there at the LB flight ramp during ship 001 flight test worked many years at DAC...... RIP Crew chief Tom Newman my buddy thanks for the 3rd shift tuna filled jalapeno poppers we had a great time at night on the ramp I love you man!!!!
Can we go back in time just a few years. Things seemed better, trippier and more 80’s back in the 90’s!😁😛
Really this is just an MD-80neo. The MD-90 wasn't that much of an upgrade from the MD-90
Engines mounted in the Rear of these MD planes are notorious for ingesting Ice
The music is so 1990's, then all of a sudden in goes 1980's!
this was cool vid with some great shots and uber 90s one of my fav and sexiest planes flew a DL one recently from wilmington to atlanta pretty comfy i thought loved the sound honestly better than the RJ 200 from ATL to san antonio IMHO i will miss the whole series from the diesel 9 to the angry puppy
Best music EVER!
Has anyone else noticed that rear engined planes cane under wing engined ones in the looks department.
Thank you love the videos what a beautiful plane
Nice view of the Weber Air Stairs at 3:15.
Thanks for sharing... 😍
What's the difference between the MD-90 and a 717?
717 is about 110 seats while the MD-90 is 150-160
carnyboy04 The 717 is actually the MD95 a md project released by Boeing in 1998 it is a modified and modernized DC9-30 they have RR BR715 engines instead of PW engines and has a range of 3815 KM for the 717-200 hight gross weight.
Size
0:49 is that real touch screen??
