Thank you for such an amazing tutorial. The only thing with which I disagree is that players may want to experiment with setting the preamp volume to maximum and controlling the output volume with the master. In my experience, this has been the best way to get “tube like” responsiveness from the preamp stage (being able to use the guitar’s volume and tone controls to “drive or clean-up” the amp). I can’t say enough how much I appreciate this tutorial. You ROCK (and Blues and Metal)!
Fantastic! My wife gave me a Katana 50 MKII for Christmas. I've been loving it. I've played through a Deluxe Reverb most of my life, except for several years through a Roland JC-120. I'm not a effects type of guy, I own one pedal, and I've used it maybe 5 times in 30 years. It did enjoy the Chorus effect on the JC-120 though. This amp is blowing me away. It has a great clean sound, very full and responsive. The Chorus effect is terrific. I just started playing with some of the effects, and just loaded the Tone Studio today. Justin this demo was great, the rabbit hole goes deep, and you cleared up a lot.

I just wanted to chime in on the " Presence " issue. Think of it as a " Mid " with a higher frequency range. Typically the " Mid " ranges anywhere from 500Hz-3KHz and " Presence " is a mid-boost really, and ranges from 3KHz-10KHz. Another great vid from Justin. Kudos.

Justin, this series is one of the best equipment tutorials I’ve ever seen on any piece of equipment Ever. THANK YOU! I love my Katana 100. (Sometimes I even get to turn it past ½ watt!) LOL.

Justin, this was super helpful! I've had the Katana for a year, but just recently started exploring the tone studio...i guess because the stock controls are so good to begin with. Thanks so much! Also just added sneaky amps library...wow! Looking forward to next video!

Wow. That is honestly one of the best explanation videos I have seen for this. I have the 100watt head, but haven’t messed with the tone studio. I will most definitely be doing that this weekend. I’ve also just got this amp on Wednesday so not had much time to mess around with it. Looking forward to more katana videos. You lessons are always very informative and very easy to follow. Thanks.
Hi Justin! In spite of this being 5 years old, I learned a ton! I bought a first version 100 used and LOVE it! But it takes some learning. I also have an Artist MkII. WAY better amp for gigging but the 100 has a lot to offer in band practice. In a 12x20 room it has plenty of power and I can leave it there and be used to the pedals and effects for a gig. So thanks again for a great tutorial. I was not tickled that you can't put multiple tones on one channel but having reverb and delay on the same channel changed everything! My artist is still my go to amp to gig....great amp. The only bad part is it's not bluetooth. I also have a hughes and kettner black 200 and the bluetooth connection is AMAZING! Rock on
The nice thing about this software is that it also is the exact same software you use with other Boss product so you don't have to learn a whole new system every time. I have the 100 watt artist 1x12 and I use a Roland expression pedal to control the volume, delays, the wah's and any other that has a sweepable parameter. An awesome amp. And downloading other people who are very talented is easy as pie. Most all Boss artist has a ton of patches that you just click and drag into the slot and you're done. So easy. Great video. You're the best!
Yeah looks like the editor/librarian software is almost identical to that of the pedal board versions like the Boss MS-3. Powerful software that is used friendly
Hi Justin, I’m so glad you’re sharing this with the world right now. I’m just about to buy the Kat100 and can’t wait to try out all the funky options for this amp. By the way, your videos are always top notch. Have been playing for only a short time and learning using online lessons by others. This has been good, but I think I’ll get into your lessons to progress further. Don’t suppose you do any one-on-one online coaching?
I’m having an Adobe issue, so I have never been able to connect to my katana. I think you definitely need to connect to the amp to adjust its tone properly. Working on the bugs right now.
Great vid, I have had the 100 for a while and love it and you just added somethings I didn't quite get how to setup. Looking forward to more. Thanks Justin
Hi Justin, If you down load the Android "Katana Librarian" app you get additional amp simulations!!!! I've got the Katana II 100 but I expect it applies to most of the range as its the same chip inside. Here's the full list of amp types: Acoustic Acoustic (Variation) Clean Clean (Variation) Crunch Crunch (Variation) Lead Lead (Variation) Brown Brown (Variation) Natural Clean Combo Crunch Stack Crunch Hi-Gain Stack Power Drive Extreme Lead Core Metal Clean Twin Pro Crunch Deluxe Crunch VO Drive VO Lead Match Drive BG Lead GB Drive MS1959 I MS1969 I+II R-Fire Vintage R-Fire Modern T-AMp Lead And then for each variation there is a Bright Switch
Master Volume at 100% all the time ... then adjust the patch? Thanks, Justin. WHAT if we want full power amp volume/saturation on a patch? Will that require a master volume reduction?
You have a hard time understanding. Shit I have a hard enough time trying to just get good sounds from what amp has on it. Let alone trying to go into the tone studio. I would be completely lost there. The Hell with the computer crap. I just want to get some cool sounds from the amp itself. I would be happy with that. I don't need 60 different sound effects. Have fun
Such a rich, versatile resource for all types of electric and acoustic players, I am more of a classic rock, blues, jazz'ish player and the effects and modulation stack covers all of this, plus it has a wonderful clean classic tone also, I am amazed and very grateful, this is technology in the service of human beings. I can see metal, and heavy rock players being equally well catered for, the GA-FC pedal is essential for live gigging, but the price point is very reasonable.
Just got a Katana air. Most of this applies. Boss almost hit a home run, but those either/or (boost or mod)... what were they thinking? This is like a micro cube. Plus not being able to use computer is a pisser. My Vox adio and Fender Mustang Mini have that (I play at beach so need battery power). BUT your no nonsense get down to approach is refreshing, great job. You fill that gap. Another area Boss failed: just how to work the things, on par with some Chinese electronics: "put in batteries and use".
Bought a Katana 50 a week ago because thr30's dont seem to exist locally right now and had no idea this was a thing in such a low cost amp :D damn time to get nerdy
Nice Video....You should have said though for which Katana this applies, because the head for example is not this and has some differences. Thx for the video
One more trick you can do is hook up a Boss Eband ( if you have one) via a red/white dual speaker out with a 1/4 inch cable end into your Katana and you get all the drums and effects from the eband coming out of the Katana! And the Katana controls still work to change the overall sound. It's a wild combo !I'm sure my pedal board and Podhdfx unit would work too but it's a really compact option.Try it.You'll like it.
Great stuff Justin! Thanks! I have the 50.Its a fun amp! The 1/4" rec out plugged into my focusrite or USB direct to laptop work for recording. Looking for your next tutorial. I'm using the 28 different " sneaky amp" feature also.
that is correct - I get a lot of gear free - but this one I requested because so many people said it was the best begfinner amp around, and I wanna help y'all with your tone! :)
Thank you Justin for this how to Vid. so glad your doing these kinds of Videos for these types of new amps with these APPS. I hope you do more of these.
I just bought this amp and although I've already figured out how things work, I still enjoyed your video. I'm curious as to why you don't like the noise suppressor? I don't really play metal or particularly high gain stuff but I occasionally got a little hum (even using humbuckers) and just turning on the noise suppressor took care of that. I can understand not setting it too high but why wouldn't you want it on? It doesn't seem to clip the notes unnaturally.
This is beginning to make my Blackstar TVP look dated and I love that amp but this has so many features that I wanted on the Blackstar that even the new Silverline amps do not have.
The Boss FS-6 footswitch works with the Katana 50. It has two pedals-- one to switch channel (Ch1/Ch2) , and one to switch banks (Bank1/Bank2)... So you can call up 4 presets with the footswitch.
I see how settings can be manipulated exactly as you're showing...but if you exit out of tone studio and bring it back up, are those settings that you just made saved?..and if not, how do you save those settings? thanks.
Excellent tutorial. At 13:35, you mention that it is possible to import songs (or backing tracks) and play them back with altered pitch & tempo. That is cool. How many songs can you save? Are these saved on the amp? Can playback be triggered from the amp even when it is not connected to Tone Studio?
Thank you. Honestly, I sort of knew it had extras, I never looked at them at first. Now that I am thinking about hooking up my computer as amplifier, maybe I don't need the amplifier's special software. I like it though. So, I'll get it close with Boss' software. You showed me that there are some good rock'n'roll settings, which is my favorite kind of music. However, I might like to play some disco guitar. I think I could do that clean, right?
Hi Justin thanks for the great Katana videos. Any chance you could do an EQ guide for live patches, mainly to get the best tone at higher gig volumes 👍
New user here. So, what do you set your amp knobs to when your adjusting in the software? Sure the software follows the amp knobs but if you set up a setting in the software, what does the amp need to be set at as when you take your amp out for a gig, it won't match your settings. I'm confused.
I read in a comment section somewhere that the crunch channel is modeled after a Fender amp, so for those sweet Fender cleans it's actually best to put it on the crunch channel and turn the gain way down. Although, I don't know how true that is as I haven't got the amp yet.
Hi Justin Appreciate the walk through on the Tone studio . I have the Katana 100 and have had a lot of fun experimenting with a lot of sounds I also have the GA-FC foot switch to expand along withe new Firmware 3 which is a newly released upgrade by Boss ! I see that you are holding a Stratocaster type Guitar . I also have a Strat with single coil in the neck and middle position and a Humbucker in the Bridge , I'm trying to get a Jazz tone from this Strat without changing the neck pup but I've entertained that thought by maybe getting a "Cool Rails " in a single coil configuration pickup
Question. So, on the pot, you can either have one effect of the other not both together? That is confusing. It would be better if you just had 6 slots and you could assign anything anywhere.
Fantastic tutorial Justin, thanks. Just wondering whether you would recommend this approach or the Boss ME-80 (with a neutral amp) as the way to go for someone who is just getting into effects. Both, I guess, are excellent for their simple layouts, esp. when compared to those typical multi effects pedals, with endless, convoluted menus. Plus they’re both budget friendly. (Stand alone pedals and higher end multi effects processors are out for obvious cost reasons.) Thanks.
I'm still getting used to the contour knob on my Marshall... this is wild! Thinking of getting one of these this month, so this is invaluable, but there is almost too much to tweak. But looks like a lot of fun as well...☺
Don't know if I missed it but would you be running the effects through the clean mode (or Kleen Start) or wpuld yiu be running the effects alongside Lead for example
Will this work with a cheap computer? You know (slow) I want to by a computer just for my katana but don’t want to spend much because that’s all I would use it for. Any recommendations? Thank you
Mr Justin...so do you connect your laptop to apmpli katana with guitar link or irig sir..? Or the seller give you special cable to connect laptop to ampifier.? Like I have laptop ACER 2014 with windows 7. And i going to buy katana boss 50. Thanks
Awesome video but can't find the actual download link... Can you help with the KLEEN free patch? No link below the google ad.... nothing there. Thanks! Looking forward to trying it! :)
Hey Justin, it seems you really know your way around the software and was wondering if you can help me with a glitch i have. I have the updated series with a Katana Artist and can not get the FX Delay 2 to work at all.Even after selecting the delay feature only the Mode switch. Any help would be great, thanks. Keep the videos coming.
No sorry, the tone studio is the same. The remark was not meant to nitpick. But it is not immediately clear to the casual viewer that you are working with the 50 version. (unless you follow the katana videos from the beginning of course;))
Ive had the beastie for 6 months now and it's fantastic, particularly for players like me who just jam at home and like to record themselves to share. The USB out from the on-board sound card is pretty good and works fine with the free version of the Studio One Daw. Maybe you could cover that element of the amp' s functionality?
Hi Justin! Is it possible to change the Ch1 and Ch2 configuration - for other kind of amps - on the Tone Studio. I saw somewhere that its possible to add some other amps, like the Roland Chorus, on the Katana. Cheers!
JUSTIN ive only just got this amp finding it bit difficult 1 How do you save the sound that you've created 2nd you have on your pedal BOO/MOD/FX/DELAY/REV EFFECTS/ each of those 6 pedal buttons have a different effect then you adjust SOLO LEVEL, does that change all the sounds across the whole GAFC /EX PEDAL EXAMPLE BOOST/MOD FX/DELAY etc RHYTHM guitar on pedal REVERB or FX how do i activate the same sound but make it louder in volume for a guitar solo , in other words does that SOLO LEVEL on the tone studio change the sound of the whole pedal other wise sounds on the GAFC pedal will be constant SO HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE OVERDRIVE on every effect IE 9 then SOLO 15 ACROSS EVERY EFFECT ON THE WHOLE PEDAL thanks Tim
at around the 5:20 min mark when you were moving the booster setting on the screen, im confused!! Does the knob move on the amp when you change setting on the screen or does the setting you did on the screen automatically sets the sound?
The knob does not physically turn, but the setting is adjusted. The second you start to turn the physical knob on your amp, it will readjust to the physical knob setting.
You mentioned that the amp sounds best with the master volume turned all the way up, and the volume controlled with the volume knob. I've seen/read this in other overviews of the amp as well. For me, it gets extremely loud, even at the .5 watt setting. The effects don't have as big of an effect on the sound when the volume knob is low. Would you compensate by increasing the gain or the effect level?
It's the the other way around; you have VOLUME always at max and set MASTER VOLUME according to your needs. Volume is basically signal strength before it goes through the effects so you get way less effective, well effects. Master volume is just how loud the speaker in your combo is.
This was the only thing about the video that I found with which I “didn’t agree.” I’ve found that you want to dime the preamp volume and use the master to set the final levels.
i finally managed to download and install the boss sound central software, BUT, now its says conection faillure, can you help fix that? maybe its the printer cable thats fucked up, but i doubt that.
Thanks for your help Justin! One thing I am getting frustrated with is that I cannot seem to be able to save different settings in the tone studio for each of my three booster types on one single channel. I am currently using overdrive, 60s fuzz, and muff fuzz, and would like to have different bottom levels and tone levels for each of these. But for some reason, every time I change the level for these settings for one boost type, it changes for every boost type in that channel. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just not possible to have different values for each boost type in one channel?

I’m having an Adobe issue, so I have never been able to connect to my katana. I think you definitely need to connect to the amp to adjust its tone properly. Working on the bugs right now.
Great vid, I have had the 100 for a while and love it and you just added somethings I didn't quite get how to setup. Looking forward to more. Thanks Justin
Hi Justin, If you down load the Android "Katana Librarian" app you get additional amp simulations!!!! I've got the Katana II 100 but I expect it applies to most of the range as its the same chip inside.
Here's the full list of amp types:

Very well done explanation, as usual. Thanks.
Master Volume at 100% all the time ... then adjust the patch? Thanks, Justin.
WHAT if we want full power amp volume/saturation on a patch? Will that require a master volume reduction?
Thanks for this series. I have a Katana 100 and have issues understanding these settings.
I am happy you made this video because I recently bought a Boss Katana.
Graham Linux I think Justin must have got one for free
that is correct - I get a lot of gear free - but this one I requested because so many people said it was the best begfinner amp around, and I wanna help y'all with your tone!
I just don't like them - I do hear that it clips the starts of notes a tiny bit - and I'm school I guess - I don't mind a bit of rattle and hum! :)
Yeah, give me some of that rattle and hum...it let's you know it is on!
@WARREN BUTLER BAND Are you asking where to find it? It doesn't have a "name" in Tone Studio other than "NS" on the main page.
Gray Bryan the noise gate kills your potential sustain too if not careful
A brilliant tutorial - thanks!
This is beginning to make my Blackstar TVP look dated and I love that amp but this has so many features that I wanted on the Blackstar that even the new Silverline amps do not have.
What does the silverline not have? I think it sounds better than katana
Thats great, but isnt there a way to do all this on a touch screen device instead than on a laptop? Cheers
The Boss FS-6 footswitch works with the Katana 50. It has two pedals-- one to switch channel (Ch1/Ch2) , and one to switch banks (Bank1/Bank2)... So you can call up 4 presets with the footswitch.
Yes good pedal just got it for free from sweetwater
Are you the British Norm MacDonald?
Great video! Very helpful!
Tq Justine, very helpful video.
Didn't realize Norm Macdonald played guitar.
I love Norm
Dude. You beat me to it.
His name is turd furguson
Exactly what I thought when I started watching.
WOW! I didn't see that until you said something. Now I can't unsee it, thanks.
Thank you Justin. if I may ask, how do you record the tracks? Usb, audio interface or mic?
Great indepth video! I was wondering is it possible to use Flanger and Chorus at the same time? Thanks!
How can I find the requirements the computer. Memory, iOS, and the rest? I think that Justin is doing a great thing for all of us. Thank you Justin👍🏼
Hello, I am Justin, nice to meet you Justin.
New user here.
So, what do you set your amp knobs to when your adjusting in the software? Sure the software follows the amp knobs but if you set up a setting in the software, what does the amp need to be set at as when you take your amp out for a gig, it won't match your settings. I'm confused.
Thanks man. Very good explanation.
Thanks - that actually helped me to understand my Waza-air's!!! Wish they had the same GUI as this
Great introduction, thanks. Just the right level.
I read in a comment section somewhere that the crunch channel is modeled after a Fender amp, so for those sweet Fender cleans it's actually best to put it on the crunch channel and turn the gain way down. Although, I don't know how true that is as I haven't got the amp yet.
Did you ever find out if this is true?
Is the booster routed before the preamp?
Thanks for showing me what cable I need, and how to connect my Katana to my computer to start with.
I'm still getting used to the contour knob on my Marshall... this is wild! Thinking of getting one of these this month, so this is invaluable, but there is almost too much to tweak. But looks like a lot of fun as well...☺
certainly a lot of knobs to play with if you dig that kind of thing!
Thank you
Oh! I got Sneaky Amps, a hell of a lot of stuff to mess with. Perhaps later a video on that. 👍
But CAN they be saved into the amp from the computer and where do they go?
Mr Justin...so do you connect your laptop to apmpli katana with guitar link or irig sir..?
Or the seller give you special cable to connect laptop to ampifier.?
Like I have laptop ACER 2014 with windows 7. And i going to buy katana boss 50. Thanks
Awesome video but can't find the actual download link... Can you help with the KLEEN free patch? No link below the google ad.... nothing there. Thanks! Looking forward to trying it! :)
NM had to sign in, got it. : )
All these lessons for the Katana is really helpful! Hope to see more videos exploring the Katana and of course your playing ;) Thank you Justin! :)
coming on "Tone Tuesdays" the next while!
@@justinguitar Awesome! This is great for a beginner like me.
I am torn between getting the boss MK 100 or the catalyst. I would love the katana 50 but it has no effects loop, and that's huge to me.
Hello Justin, be sure to mention that you're working on a Katana 50. There are some slight differences with the other Katana amps. Good work!
What the Tone Studio is different too? I mention about the presence control and the more patches in the 100 I think?
No sorry, the tone studio is the same. The remark was not meant to nitpick. But it is not immediately clear to the casual viewer that you are working with the 50 version. (unless you follow the katana videos from the beginning of course;))
I always welcome constructive criticism :) so all good dude! I'm just glad I didn't mess something up badly!
Ive had the beastie for 6 months now and it's fantastic, particularly for players like me who just jam at home and like to record themselves to share. The USB out from the on-board sound card is pretty good and works fine with the free version of the Studio One Daw. Maybe you could cover that element of the amp' s functionality?
does the amp have to be hooked up to the computer in order to move presets? I can't get them to save in the panel
@JustinGuitar can you look into the Sneaky Amps feature of the Katana and possibly make a guide for it?
Can you add your own sound/sample to sy-300 and boss tone studio?
Hi Justin!
Is it possible to change the Ch1 and Ch2 configuration - for other kind of amps - on the Tone Studio. I saw somewhere that its possible to add some other amps, like the Roland Chorus, on the Katana.
Cheers!
does boss tone studio have compressor?
JUSTIN ive only just got this amp finding it bit difficult 1 How do you save the sound that you've created 2nd you have on your pedal BOO/MOD/FX/DELAY/REV EFFECTS/ each of those 6 pedal buttons have a different effect then you adjust SOLO LEVEL, does that change all the sounds across the whole GAFC /EX PEDAL EXAMPLE BOOST/MOD FX/DELAY etc
RHYTHM guitar on pedal REVERB or FX how do i activate the same sound but make it louder in volume for a guitar solo , in other words does that SOLO LEVEL on the tone studio change the sound of the whole pedal other wise sounds on the GAFC pedal will be constant SO HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE OVERDRIVE on every effect IE 9 then SOLO 15 ACROSS EVERY EFFECT ON THE WHOLE PEDAL thanks Tim
Thank you
at around the 5:20 min mark when you were moving the booster setting on the screen, im confused!! Does the knob move on the amp when you change setting on the screen or does the setting you did on the screen automatically sets the sound?
The knob does not physically turn, but the setting is adjusted. The second you start to turn the physical knob on your amp, it will readjust to the physical knob setting.
If you change any of the paramenters does the am save it when you disconnect or is there a save button somewhere?
Hello Justin why the clear and write is no function when i press it (Grey) please help
Thanks!
Thank you :) Appreciate your support!
Thank you very much Norm MacDonald
I've got a old Dell Latitude | D 630 With Microsoft Xp Professional Version. 4.5 32bit system, Support for this OS has long ran out. Still I hope to make My Katana-50 Studio interface display.
I'm usually focused most of my learning over to Unix like machines mainly Fedora, Ubuntu, or Linux. Needless to say I'm gonna need all the luck in the world; to pull this one off. I'm trying to up-date Intel drivers for the Dell Windows XP without support is a lot of trial and error! I've gotten rid of all the (yellow baseballs warnings) in the Windows Software Manager except one (Other USB device)... I've been working on this Xp operating System off and on now for two weeks, plus keeping my Linux 20 'Ulyana' Xfce 64-bit running smoothly!
