Interesting. I’ve watched multiple videos promoting pruning only in late winter, early spring. Your advice bravely suggests the complete opposite pruning approach during summer, I have to agree it makes sense. You’ve allowed your fruiting load to thrive unrestricted then pruned everything that is drawing energy so the energy goes into forming your fruit. I’ve only seen one other video advise the same as you and her apple espalier was unbelievably loaded! Well done
The best instructional video on the internet. Clear explanation and demonstration and enough time to see what is happening and take in information. I come back every year to check technique. Thank you.
The amount of TH-camrs that want to tell you their life story before giving you any info on gardening is nauseating. Good clear info and well presented
Such a great video, hitting all the key points quickly and concisely. I wish I'd seen this a month ago before I pruned my apple tree, you live and you learn.
Finally, a wonderful video to show the correct way to do this! I have been trimming my apple tree in February and getting too few apples and a lot of growth. Anxious to try this. So appreciate this!
I followed your instructions and pruned my apple on the fance tree and so glad as I didn't cut off the stumpy branches (fruiting spurs) I did cut of the pointy branches (growing whippy tree branches ) I got lots of Orange Pippins .....I did this in May .....tree now again has lots of pointy whippy branches to I prune them of again now in Sept before winter ? Excellent. I didn't realise about summer pruning. Thanks producing this. When you say prune to the 3rd leaf back, do you mean 3rd pair of leaves? More videos like this would be really beneficial for self sufficiency project? Are those trees dwarf varieties?
Thanks for the informative video. I have 2 espaliered trees which weren't pruned last year so there is fruit on longer branches coming our from the from the main horizontals . can I prune back the new growth now (mid summer) and prune back the fruiting stems later in the year once the fruit has ripened? many thanks
I don’t really have a place to trellis this type of tree, does it need a trellis? Also, can you graft onto it to make it a full tree? These may seem like odd questions, but I saw one of these at a local store. Love the variety of apples, but don’t really want a flat looking tree.
Late to the party here but...@thediggersclub I want to know does the winter and summer pruning this apply to other types of fruit trees too? I'm not sure apples will grow well in Brisbane so I am thinking figs and nectarines as well as Tahitian lime
Summer pruning is usually best for espaliers as it helps restrict the growth of the trees. We usually have to do 3 or 4 prunings throughout the summer, starting in late December, with the last prune about mid march.

Thanks Julian. At last, a clear, concise video on the subject!

Good explanation of the process involved. Hooray for apple trees that can fit in smaller spaces!

Hi, Thanks for the great video, How far apart would you plant dwarf apple trees? And How tall are your apple trees in this video please ?
