- The Batman Of Zur En Arrh from silver age alien to something else... This colourful version of the dark knight has quite the history at DC Comics and beyond. Batman has seen this concept evolved in a couple of ways, one an edgy maniacal version in Grant Morrison's Batman and beyond. the second a more faithful rendition by Batman The Brave And The Bold. We take a look at it all as we dive into The Super Batman From Planet X here on Casually Comics!

Does Zorro In Arkham sound like Zur En Arhh?
I think you missing the "ck" sound it would spell like Arkam
For me sounds like a strecht, only with saying it a lot, having a broken mind like Batman, or something else entirely.
Only if you really mumble it, like "just hit your alarm at 6am and saying 5mominutes" kinda mumble
Not specifically--but totally works as how a kid half-paying attention might hear it.
There just wasn't time for a weird conversation of "did you just say a word that doesn't exist" before--well, that double-murder we get treated to every two years.
My hearing was wrecked by working on military jets so...yeah. If Bruce had loud tinnitus at age 8 I guess.
Love how they got Kevin Conroy to voice a hodgepodge of Batman and Clark Kent. THEN got Dana Delaney and Clancy Brown to voice his planet's love interest and villains. Brave and the Bold always had fun with its throwback voice cameos.
Indeed. 😊☮️
They even got Adam west on the show
I've always seen The Brave and the Bold as a celebration of Batman across different media.
damn im glad conroy starred (even breifly) in a show i have been enjoying lately
@@SuicidalSummerSnowWomanhe also voiced the spectre
Honestly, alien Batman sounds much cooler than “Batman Batmans hard enough for two Batman when Batman can’t Batman”
It is a vibe. You could put the Zur En Arrh mental break in "The Batman" and it not feel too out there. But the alien world adventure works better in Brave and the Bold.
Say that ten times fast😂
Batman uses the bat to inspire fear.
Meanwhile, Zur En Arhh uses the power of extreme color contrast to dazzle his foes into submission
Honestly, with Zur-En-Arrh's Superman like traits, I wouldn't be surprised if he tried less to scare criminals and more to inspire people with his colorful costume.
_It's obvious that the Batman of Zur En Arhh is trying very hard to outdo Crazy Quilt..._
That or he knows the power of epilepsy.
Given how that planet's bats look, I believe he got lost in trying to be in fashion trends
And also a bat (7:36)
I prefer the alien angle more than the psychological. I typically like the psychological approach in a lot of stories but I think the alien angle is a lot more fun and interesting. Batman's psyche is in my opinion already explored pretty thoroughly.
Comics are so flexible that I think both can be true at the same time. Zur En Arhh as a hallucination that is and or becomes real.
indeed, like technically speaking batman is already bruce trauma response to his past, this is just a double trauma response now
also i kind of hate the whole "zorro would be taken to arkham" why tho? zorro is not pretending being a foxman or anything at all, he really is just a masked dude being fancy and fighting, by that logic any criminal with a head covering are automatically going to arkham even if it is just to cover their identity to steal, you really gotta pretend everything works with a irl idea of teh world, not even gotham/comics world logic
I feel like the best way to modernize Tlano/Batman of Zur-En-Arrh would be to set him in the Legion of Superheroes era. Make him be inspired by a bat-like creature of his own world and reading of the Batman of Earth from a thousand years ago, which is where gets his interlac and english name Batman instead of whatever it'd be in his own world's language(s). He'd operate mostly on his own world but occasionally help the Legion, perhaps with detective work most of all to truly fit his namesake!
Really loved the fact Batman of Zurr-En-Arrh was voiced by the legendary Kevin Conroy. Interestingly, in the spanish dub, this alien Batman was voiced by Fernando de Luis, who also voiced the Batman of the 90's cartoon. Such a cool detail! 😎🇪🇦
That ONLY makes it BETTER!
Morrison's line about Batman being "out of his comfort zone" is interesting because it does speak to the fan tendency to make bad older stories more narratively satisfying in their mind when often times, the original writers just did not care and thought they were writing for children
Fun fact: Alpha-Red is actually from the Pokemon-inspired kiddy Batman show that was pitched by Bruce Timm, Glen Murakami, Adam Warren and Alan Burnett. It was made to satisfy the suits before they came up with Batman Beyond. Only difference is that he’s an AI in the pitch and a robot in this episode.
And y'know, Alpha-Red, Alfred
As a kid Batman the Brave and the Bold was my first exposure to Zurr-En-Arrh and when I started reading comics I wanted to go back to older stories so for me the original Zur-En-Arrh Batman is still the one that first comes to mind. Honestly part of me wishes they brought that element back and have Bat-Mite be the reason why for the past few years almost every Batman story has been about him losing control of all of Gotham.
It could work. Heck, there’s precedent for 5th dimensional imps causing meta stuff like that to happen. One of my favorite Mxy stories by Grant Morrison implies that every story Mxy is a part of is him telling/writing stories about his favorite hero who he’s too attached to.
Can never get enough joy from the silver age! Glad the Brave and the Bold cartoon maintained the spirit of the original story.
I prefer this version of Batman of Zurr En Arr because it's less Edgy and more interesting. The idea of a hero on another planet being inspired by Batman and taking up his mantle is more fascinating.
The Zur-En-Arrh episode was one of my favorite episodes. You should definitely talk about equinox if you have the time
The Batman: Brave and the Bold series was just so pitch-perfect. If they had sat down with the intent of creating a show just for me, they couldn't have done a better job. :D
I do admire the way Morrison isn't afraid to latch onto any crazy random thing from a character's past and try to find a way to make it fit. It's not always 100% successful, but he's always in there, taking the big swings.
I definitely want to hear your take on Fatman. On the one hand, there's a lot of fat-shaming humor that probably wouldn't fly today. On the other hand, he's shown as brave and smart and gets to save the day. Plus I like the fact that Batman is completely nonchalant about some comedian mocking him. If it were a Silver Age Superman story, I feel like Supes would be at least a little bit miffed about this guy roasting him, but Batman is all, "Relax, dude, I can take a joke".
Spot on! Love the ending with Nurse Ratchet without Clank flying around!
"Ray-bullets bounce of his chest!"
That's not because he's super-powered, the ammunition is ineffective because it has an ongoing identity crisis. How can it be both rays *AND* bullets?
Look, quantum mechanics confuse everyone, the ray-bullets shouldn't be ashamed
On a less funny note, maybe the narrator isn't well-versed in sci-fi/alien tech
They're so far ahead of us technologically. They can make ammunition so intelligent that it's capable of questioning its identity and developing body dysmorphia.
Loving this Brave and the Bold love! Hope the DCU takes Batman into this more adventurer style character, ala Caped Crusader, while allowing reeves to be the more gritty “Dark Detective”
It's gotta be the Brave and the Bold episode. I already lvoedthe show, but the more I hear about the background of these episodes the more you can really feel the love the people who made it have for Batman and comics in general. I;m semi ashamed to admit I didn't realize how much it reference until the Superman episode which was obvisously memin on the SuperDickery stuff. After I ahd to rewatch the series and really started to notice other referecnes.
I hope you cover "Triumvirate of Terror" where they had to really stretch to try to make Cheetah seem like she was on the Joker and Luthor's level, or "Cry Freedom Fighters" for Doll Man, or "The Criss Cross Conspiracy" for the show's take on Batwoman.
Dont forget the Doom Patrol episode and the Music Meister one.
Please, never stop doing your Batman voice for these videos. It brings me so much unreasonable joy and I have no idea why 🤣
Personally, I prefer the alternate planet thing, but I admit the under the red hood choose your own story film has made me more accepting of the parallel personality thing. Although I prefer it to be caused by something driving Batman insane like the Lazarus pit (like it is in that film .)
This kind of silver age shenanigans would be so cool to see in the movies. As much as I like the gritty takes, I'm sure that if done right people would be fully in for some live action Batman meets alter ego alien Batman without needing much of an explanation.
I'd be done for a Animated Movie based on the Planet X story.
Lois Lane analog still having the “silver-age” superhero thirst. Nice.
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series, and one of first big exposures to Zur-En-Arrh. I knew of him through passing, but this episode showed me the classic version and few years later, the Morrison version (which... I'm not exactly fan of. It removes the silver age love from it).
Plus it reunites, Kevin Conroy, Dana Delaney, Corey Burton, and Clancy Brown, altogether again!
The Brave and the Bold animated show was so filled with great stories, Easter eggs, clever references, classic voice talents that Sasha could do an entire year doing nothing but B and B reviews and they would all be amazing.
Potential subjects: The Doom Patrol story, the Captain Marvel crossovers, especially the one with Black Adam, the Aquaman story with Ocean Master, the two-parter with Owl Man, the Joker-Weeper team-up, the crossover with all three Flashes, the multi-part Starro tale where B'wana Beast redeemed himself, Red Tornado and son, Plastic Man vs. Grodd, the Captain Atom story... just so many.
It's always good to listen to Sasha casually explaining such a silly comic thing after you had a rough night! 😂
Since I grew up on Silver Age comics, this sounds absolutely hilarious. The alternate Batman's costume even reminds me a little of the costumes that Batman wore during the episode of multi-colors. Thanks for posting this!
I loved the whacky Brave and The Bold faithful retelling of the silver age nonsense. I also love that you go in depth to talk about the origin of these characters.
Excellent episode. I like both the serious and silly versions of Zur En Arrh.
Such a strange piece of Bat-lore, just like Stan Lees Just Imagine Batman, who's costume made him look like a literal bat (and goes extremely hard). I'm shocked they've never made a "Superman of Zur-En-Arrh".
I prefer silly, mainly because I like it when Batman is silly
@@kaykay8855 Same.
@@kaykay8855 TBH you could make the silly version serious, what if the aliens completely annex the planet as revenge, or alt batman is an obsessive with a Bruce Wayne contemplation room.
Shout out to Batman Off World. Its shaping up to be a fun and exciting Batman space adventure.
RIP Punch Bot. Keep on punching in robot heaven.
Thank you... and it feels good to listen Conroy as Batman again... teary eye moment. Will peek into that episode later on :D
I frankly really like the alien vigilante means that there's more people doing good in the DC universe.
Loving these Brave And The Bold episodes, Sasha! I grew up with this show, and it does not get enough love.
I thoroughly enjoyed that Batman Zur En Arrh episode from Brave and the Bold. A fun high concept love letter to silver age as most of BatB is. I'd love to see a video on how they handled Owlman!
Maybe not as iconic as Crisis on Two Earths Owlman for many people, but that arc was still extremely enjoyable and I liked the design.
Brave and the Bold version is by far my fave version. Would've loved to get a mini/series of it. A little bit Flash Gordon / John Carter, a little bit Silver Age affectionate parody, and all the wonderful toys.
Loved this one too. Have an idea for a follow up where bats of Zur En Arrh teams up with Vartox and they become a Worlds Finest team. Of course Vartox must be wearing his Sean Connery Zardoz outfit.
@@amerigo178 of course, can't save the universe without the Sean Connery outfit.
The Brave and the Bold is the BEST DC animated show. A true love letter to comics like no other
There was so much love for the silver age behind the scenes on BTBATB.
Im so glad Sasha is enjoying BTBATB, I'm still waiting for the Music Meister episode
The super fan homage was better than the ultra-grit by a large margin
This is the best comic book channel on TH-cam for me, easily
It funny that the silly lighthearted stuff is easier to understand than the darker material.
Had no idea until these last few videos just how much of a fan servicey passion project BB&tB was. Need to binge it, since I missed it when it was out
Having not heard of the Zur En Arhh storyline prior to this video I’m leaning towards colorful zany superpower red version. Although they could because of the DCAU voice cast reunion. Man I miss Dana voicing Lois Lane lol
Another great video. Thanks Sasha
Fantastic episode Sasha. I really love you going through the history from the Silver Age through Morrison to cap it off with my fave The Brave and the Bold cartoon. I think the cartoon does the best service for this as it better matches the light-hearted tone of the Silver Age and also manages to enhance it. I think how Morrison ties it in as a neat psychological nod to the original is good but it almost seems a bit overwrought and construed for my liking; some things can remain light and silly fun. Thanks again for the great Brave and the Bold coverage.
More easter Eggs, Vilzy Vilars costume is prominently green with a floating eyeball cam which is definitely a nod to Emerald Empress and the Eye of Ekron orb. The aliens you remarks look like 113 ALSO look like alien versions of Killer Moth.
"Gothtropolis" sounds like a city where clothes only come in black, the radio only plays The Cure, and the only comic book is The Crow.
In other words: a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.
Yes! This episode has so many Easter Eggs and deep cuts, it's perfect for Sasha to review!
Honestly, I wouldn't be upset with an entire series review, episode by episode.
2:01 " knees weak palms are sweaty " TOOK ME OUT 😂
def prefer the silver age one in terms of palatability; post-crisis zur-en-arrh's themes sound like something out of an edgelord fanfic about spilt personalities (maybe a happy tree friends or danganronpa fan can relate)
(also worth noting ttlano's outfit features the "bat-in-a-yellow-oval" logo a few years before bruce puts it on his)
Fr crazy that we have one of the most iconic images of all time from The Batman of Zurr-Ehn-Arr
Haha. This is one of my favourite Brave & The Bold episodes! I like all three versions of Zur En Arrh and appreciated Morrison's typical weaving of the old & new, but the cartoon really made it a blast. Dig it!
I really like the Brave and the Bold episode, I remember watching it when I was a kid. But I do really like the new Zdarsky take, I think he expanded on the kinda shallow Morrison reimagining and made the concept more fleshed out while expanding on the morality of Batman and why he does what he does. Plus that Leo Romero backup story is pure gold.
Batman of Zur-nen-arr to me will be the funny suit.
The alien batman and mental state.
Admit it - when Zur-nen-arr began envisioning Bat-Mite, we all heard him in Paul Reubens' voice.
@@benwasserman8223 I absolutely did.
I love that story, it shows, that deep down, Batman wants to try Superman's powers
I've been seeing this goofy as costume for years and assumed it was just some Silver Age silliness but now I've really come around to it.
Brave & the Bold was my favorite Batman show growing up, and after Kevin Conroy’s passing, I’ve since grown to appreciate the Zur-En-Arrgh episode than how I originally thought of it, and it was fun. It’s nice that the Zur-En-Arrgh episode was a great tribute to the DCAU crossover episodes from both BTAS, and STAS.
Colorful alien, hands down.
The episode was my first introduction to the concept, and it's still a personal favorite!

It's a shame Vilsi didn't become a popular character. After all, she was a combination of Lois and Vicki, the two most beautiful reporters in comics history. I mean, how can you just ignore a chick like that? 😍
I'd say they both have some competition with April O'Neil (1987 TV).
Alien Zur-En-Arrh backup series when?
Vicki is to Lois what Ace is to Krypto and Bat-Mite is to Mxyzptlk.
@@KennAKALeo the robin to her superboy?
@@ProjektTaku No. Robin existed before Superboy. And for decades Superboy was just a young Superman.
And if one wants to dig deep enough they'll find Superboy was DC's response to Captain Marvel Jr., Robin was DC's response to Billy Batson.
The Silver Age 50s-60s are often shunned and left behind, for very apparent reasons. But I love seeing those concepts acknowledged, and in some cases reintroduced. So I'm glad it's being included in aby capacity. I prefer the Brave and the Bold version. But I also love how characters like Starro the Conquerer and the Polka Dot Man were used in Jame's Gun's The Suicide Squad.
As a Grant Morrison appreciator who hasn't heard about any of this...yeah I'll stick with fun superpowers Batman in Gothtropolis.
Yes, please, Sasha! We need a Batman meets Fatmam episode!
Merry Christmas, happy holidays and happy new year of 2024 to you, your husband, your kids and your cats! 🎅🏻🎄☃🎉🎊
Oh I love the adaptation of it in Brave and The Bold! You can homage without it being dark.
Love how your covering the brave and the bold cartoon recently loved that show as a kid
Love this episode of B&B, but man the current comic run is... a thing that exists.
uhh... I wouldn't write it as "B&B"; makes me think of Beavis & Butthead. How about BBB? (Batman Brave Bold).
@@JanetStarChild Just keep the "Batman" part unabreviatted if talking with brazilians, otherwise we think it's about a reality tv
5:13 This will probably be the only time I say this in my life, but with that image of Batman, I can see why people frequently compare Batman and Moon Knight. That design is very Moon Knight-esque. Also, don't mind me as I sob quietly over Bruce saying "Tim isn't my soldier! *HE'S MY SON!*"
With each episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold covered, I know it’s only a matter time we get to a B'wana Beast review
I love how you can always see the rabbit hole being explored by a series of videos. Next rabbit hole, DANNY KETCH?
As someone who followed Batman RIP at the time of its release, I had the arc of thinking Grant Morrison was a genius for rehabilitating Silver Age characters and stories (in their Batman run as in Seven Soldiers of Victory) to, because those stories were republished precisely because of Morrison's runs, thinking the original material was much more fun in it's own.
The Zur en Arhh episode is amazing, each line in the Brave and the Bold show was absolute brillant.
I've been rewatching Brave and the Bold on HBO Max and just saw this episode. I had no idea how directly they took the story right out of the comic. I think the episode really was a loving tribute to the classic comic. The whole series really just felt like they really wanted to show how much fun you could have with Silver Age stories if you just tweaked them a bit.
I remember this episode. I've come to appreciate it more now.
It kinda seems like they made this cartoon for you. I'm always amazed at the knowledge you have about comics. I wonder how many people would know 1/8 of the stuff you know about these comics. And then you add the humor. And no politics. I love you're videos. They're always fun. Thank you.
That episode is absolute silver age gold!
This episode is legitimately one of my favorite Batman episodes. It perfectly encapsulates the silliness and creativity of the silver age, while actually improving on it. It's a cool tribute to an entire era of comics, and I really Tlano as a character. The newer, more murderery Batman Zur En Arhh is fine, but I really don't want the original campy alien doppelganger to be forgotten.
Yeah I'm defiantly more actual alien fan. The mental defense is too cynical for my taste. and makes me think why do you want to drag down fun and fantastical to the mundane.
If Batman gets Superman-like powers by going to Zur-En-Ahr, what happens if Superman goes there?
Depends on whether the sun is yellow or red.
@@benwasserman8223 Maybe it's a mix in this dimension. An orange sun?
B&B threw me for a loop at first. You went from Kevin Conroy to Jethro, but his style grew on me after a while. Much like Batfleck. But there is cartoon gold in B&B.
Somehow the voices you do for Batman and Spider-Man always manage to take me by surprise and make me laugh. Never stop.
Great fun post Sasha - I had not known of Zur En Arhh before this. Happy holidays!
Oh man, the voice talent in this episode - I have GOT to check this out.
I think I liked the Zuer en Arrhh stuff before the current run. Feels like it’s overstayed its welcome.
I've heard tell of Batman Of Zur En Arrh but haven't actually read any of the stories. I suspect I'd enjoy the Silver Age version better than the modern-day Morrison. Although, I did recently have a blast with another trauma-come-to-life story when I picked up "Circle of Fire" as a cheap intro to Kyle Rayner. I didn't expect to like it very much. But you never know until you experience it. This was a very fun vid, thank you!
Before I forget, please do a video on False Face! PLEASE!
The B&B ep is probably my favorite take on the Zur En Arrh tale. Tuck it away in a parallel universe and it'll work just fine.
God, I miss Batman: The Brave and the Bold...
I thought Morrison's idea was interesting: how do you take a quirky golden age element of Batman and make it modern (i.e. dark)? The Brave and the Bold fleshed out the original story and continued their loving tributes to the bizarre stories in the history of Batman.
Golden Age?? Batman113 was from 1958.
@@KennAKALeo You're right. Believe it or not I meant Silver Age. D'oh.
@@matthewhood7844 No problem. I have no reason to disbelieve you. And have a merry happy.
@@KennAKALeo and merry happy to you.
I can't wait for the time they fuse the 2 and make the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh both a different character and a part of Batman's psyche and Bruce having to figure out to which one he's talking to at any point.
The latter, I think batman deserves some camp as a treat, he had enough edge to last him a lifetime
Thank you for explaining Bruce's Zurrsona.
One of my favorites. Thanks!
I absolutely loved this episode! I have never read or seen any of this story, and the history and explanations were top-notch. Thank you so much for making this!
“Do we really need a Batman Meets Fatman episode?”
Yes. Yes, we do. 😎
Kevin Conroy voicing a Superman like Batman is super interesting and it might be cool if alien Batman was the main Batman of Another Universe also his escape personality could be playboy Bruce or just the regular Dark Knight
I really hope you cover the Doom Patrol episode of Batman the Brave and the Bold at some point. There's a lot to unpack with that one.
I fear the Batman meets Fatman episode has become an inevitability, its secrets must be known.
To be perfectly honest with everyone!! I really like the original version of The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh as an alien version of Batman. But I really don’t care for the newer reimagined version of the character as just a crazy backup split personality of Batman (because I really don’t like how having Batman of Zur-En-Arrh being a split personality of Batman would just make him look more like Moon Knight)
I like the two versions, but I love the alien one.
I miss Kevin, its still making me cry all the time. He was really great
The brave and the bold has one of my favorite appearances/show plots of the Doom Patrol
"Knees weak, palms are sweaty"
mom's spagetti - oh wait guess Bruce wouldn't have that.
Batman R.I.P. rocks. Three words..."but not impossible" (buried alive).
I like the colorful alien version just seems like a fun thing. while the zur en arh was a fun thing in RIP and Chip Zdarsky seems to be making his batman run revolve around that idea.
Vilsy Villar in the Brave and the Bold episode was also giving Emerald Empress Vibes. Green Outfit, Floating Eye ball.
Morrison's obsession with those late 1950s stories gave us Batman-of-Zur-En-Arhh, the Kate Kane Batwoman, and Damien Wayne (and Dick Grayson as Batman). Seriously, "The Battle of the Cowl" was such a damned foregone conclusion.
