The older I get, the more depth and sadness I realize Carole is portraying in this gorgeous song. I certainly didn't "get it" as a teenager in the early 70's when she released it. Yes you are correct. To my knowledge Carol, Joni Mitchell and the other women songwriter singers of that era never ever wore revealing clothing, had dancers behind them and pyrotechnics on the stage when they performed. They just walked to center stage and performed. A lovely and grand time to be young and alive.
In 1971, I was a 7 year old kid listening to my mom playing this album. This song and the other one , "I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the sky tumbling down, I feel my heart start to trembling, whenever you're around...." lol
I was a student teacher, I sat in my car full of trepidation before I stood in front of the class to teach them English. This tune played as I summoned the courage to walk into the school. I am now retired and 68 years of age and recovering from surgery for cancer. I ended up teaching troubled lads in Liverpool and had the privilege to be best man at the wedding of one of my lads who made a success of his life. Unfortunately I stood at the graveside of one of my lads who was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest. This tune will always resonate as I embarked on being a part of the best profession on the planet.

Couldn't agree any more, born in 61, my older sister and brother had control of our cabinet stereo so I grew up listening to what they listened to....if I could only get those days back
My sentiments exactly. Couldn't have said it better if I had tried. She is truly magical, gifted with a rare ability to translate human emotion into music blended seamlessly with piercing lyrics. Arguably, the most talented singer-songwriter on the planet today. Countless thanks, Carole!!!
I don't think you'll remember Carole but back in the early 70s I was your banker at the Manufacturer's Bank in Beverly Hills and thought wow she's a knockout and has such a pure voice. Just turned 79 and still play your albums and close my eyes and remember innocent times. God bless you
Same here. Just started high school in 71, and a few primary school friends went to different schools. My elder sister had 'Tapestry', (as did every other friend's elder sister in Australia, it seemed). 'So far away' got hold of me too. Missed my K-6 friends. 65 in May.
This song strikes at the heart of the pain of losing someone you loved and hoped would stay with you forever. This big world can become extremely lonely without a person you love and loves you. It is extreme pain to invest yourself emotionally in someone, then their heart goes hard and they go.
Melodically, this song is epic. Lyrically it takes you on a journey with a woman realizing the end of her romance within three minutes. This is an incredible realization of a breakup song. She goes from being stuck in bed, to realizing they don't have any fun anymore, to accepting the end within the context of the song. Even the answer vocal goes from "we can't make it" to "we can't make it NOW." This is a masterpiece by Carole King and a unique song in it's context. So many emotions within four minutes, not to mention amazing chords and musicianship.
Very well put. What strikes me most about this piece is how Carole is not a piano virtuoso by any means, but a SONGWRITER who knows how to put a lyric to chords and melody with the best of them, and to convey all the emotions within. I believe Toni Stern wrote the lyric. IMHO this is one of the top pop songs of all time.
This is possibly the greatest pop song ever released. Catchy as hell, beautifully orchestrated, the lyrics are completely straightforward, conversational; no allusions or metaphors or 'deeper meanings' implied. It's just all out there, honest and raw, very adult and mature examination of the end of a romance.

50 years later still one of my favorite albums of all times. The old record from 1971 was worn out and i luckily found a new one without any scratches. This album deserves to be played on vinyl. Carole King, a great songwriter and with that special unique voice makes her music so timeless.
Keyspoet27 Right there with you. I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album. I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly. Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it. Still love this album, and Bookends, and SO MANY MORE!!!
I always thought that Tapestry in total from the start to the finish was the best album ever made and I still do. There were many times when I was down, depressed and all alone that I feel that listening to this album literally saved my life.
Agreed! This was one of the first pop LPs my parents got me for my 12th birthday in 1971. I've always loved this album start to finish. I'm glad it got you through tough times . God bless you!
Interesting, in this particular case, not the best song to listen to if you are seriously depressed. But one of the great songs ever, about Neil Sedaka?
Correct...because now there's just a bunch of dufus people who just spend all there time watching OTHERS on their phones---and they are dull and moronic cause they don't DO their own thing. There was nothing romantic about the 70's. Lots of tough times for lots of people. But the music? Sounds as good today as it did then. This song can't be remade. Estefan tried, but you can't really remake a perfect song and this is a perfect song.
Noel Taylor Exactly, everyone praises the era they grew up in and completely ignore the millions of people that suffered during that same period outside of their childhood suburb.
This song takes me back to a time when I was dating a really nice guy. We use to hear this song all the time when we were in the car, and since I loved to sing, I sang along with the song. One day he asked me if I was trying to tell him something. Maybe subconsciously I was, because I broke up with him not too long after because I wasn’t ready to settle down. I ended up a few years later marrying a wonderful man, and we’ve been together since. But anytime I hear this song, I think of that old boyfriend. I love how some songs can bring back a memory of a specific time in my life.
The bit that really caught my ear when this became a hit and I heard it on the radio was the instrumental section: electric guitar, and soulful saxophone, and…wait, what instrument is that? An electric piano-weaving in and out of each other. Well, not just any electric piano, a Rhodes. I ended up buying one a few years later. I gigged with it extensively well into the eighties, and I still have it.
It's so lyrically beautiful, but it also hits so hard and so deep, because nearly all of us have lived through this scenario. You listen, and the years fall away and the emotions, long buried, still feel fresh.
This woman was beyond multi-talented. Great song writer for so many great entertainers and for herself, producer, as well as talented musician and singer.🎉❤

1971 surely has to be one of the most creative in the history of rock and pop. Elton John, The Who, Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Bowie, George Harrison to name but a few were all at the top of their game and amongst them was Carole King flying high with one of the most popular albums of the year and it's headlining song It's Too Late which even now four decades on retains its fresh and honest lyrics with the dreamiest music production. And then even topping that by having James Taylor's cover of You've Got A Friend as a #1 global hit. Carole never surpassed this success but giving the world Tapestry is still indeed a legacy to be proud of.

You can't break up with any better words than this. No hatred involved, no regrets, just part ways
The older I get, the more depth and sadness I realize Carole is portraying in this gorgeous song. I certainly didn't "get it" as a teenager in the early 70's when she released it. Hadn't experienced life yet and the odd mixture of bliss and agony that come through the years that we all end up living....
One important thing to know is Carole King wrote the music to this song but not the lyrics as that lady just passed away yesterday
@@stevehobbs8130 Thanks. Didn't realize that. She did put her "soul" into the delivery of it, though, in my opinion. Something that I feel is woefully lacking in current music.

For sure. We definitely had some great music back in the day...stands the test of time.
@Augustus Blake no, keep leaning into it. You're heading to worthy places
So well expressed, thanx...
My other favorite song by her is Jazz Man...
@Augustus Blake Haha

@@gabrielvasha3929 true dat!
@@gabrielvasha3929 don't forget the 80s
Nah. There were some great hits from the 70s but I doubt it's anywhere close to the 80s.
@@notebookluvr No.
I fell for Carole and this beautiful album way back in 1971... nothing has changed 🥰
This artist along with James Taylor, The Eagles, Seals & Crofts, America were the sound and feeling of the 70s.
You can add Cat Stevens to that list.
dON'T FORGET bREAD!
carpenters n linda ronstadt..
funnily enough, the lyrics for this song were written after the author broke up with James Taylor
Also neil young and carly simon...and I forgot elton john
I love this woman! These songs take me back to my childhood in the 70s. Best memories!
This is USA for me
She also wrote You've Got A Friend, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Up On A Roof, and the list goes on and on. This is pure, complete, talent.
Rockin Roll The female version of Rod Temperton (R.I.P)
We know that... 🙃🤪😋
Will You Love Me Tomorrow's composer and lyricist: Gerry Goffin.

It's so lyrically beautiful, but it also hits so hard and so deep, because nearly all of us have lived through this scenario. You listen, and the years fall away and the emotions, long buried, still feel fresh.
Well said.😎👍
True dat....Greetings from Italy
This woman was beyond multi-talented. Great song writer for so many great entertainers and for herself, producer, as well as talented musician and singer.🎉❤
One of Carole King's biggest hits but likely few realize the memorable lyrics were written by Toni Stern, a Laurel Canyon poet who passed away the other day. NYT obit yesterday.
This is coming from a 15 year old teenager, this song is just chefs kiss 😚 🤏🏽
explore the whole thing. there is no final answer, dont waste time on bad music.
Coming from a 12 year old I agree

Class is timeless.......................
Here just reliving memories of my sister who passed away two years ago. She LOVED Carol's music, and it makes me smile to see her enjoying it in my mind. Love ya, sis.
Sorry to hear of the passing of your precious sister. Glad you have these memories. They bring comfort for sure.❤
MY BROTHER PASSED ON FEB 6 2020 AND ONLY 5 MONTHS LATER ON JULY 8 2020 MY MOTHER PASSED, JUST ONE WEEK BEFORE HER BIRTHDAY, I HAVE MANY MEMORIES THAT I TREASURE AS WELL, I THANK GOD I STILL HAVE MY SISTER, SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOURS, BLESSINGS TO YOU🙏🙏
This song is so plaintive and accepting…it captures the sadness and ultimately the resignation and acceptance of a once perfect carefree relationship gone bad….nothing you can do but amputate it and move on…..
Don't forget James Brown, that's when his funky music exploded.
And the Rolling Stones "Sticky fingers" too!
You are so Right.. I was in College 70 thru 74 & Literally Lived on Top 40 Music... Warm Summer Nights Cruising the Gut in my 67 Chevelle SS 396.. Stopping at Rebels Superstore or Gas Stations to buy Bootleg 8-Tracks and if You didn't have a Muncie 8-Track under the Dash you just weren't Cool... Tapestry was always on the Top of my List to go in the 8-Track.. The late 60's and 70's Music will live on!!!!!
Don't forget the creation of the cassette tape.
I WAS BORN IN 63 SO THE 60s and 70sIS THE MUSIC I GREW UP WITH AND THE 70s HAD SOME OF THE BEST MUSIC AND MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD ✌💖🌹👍🤘😎
