It was electric. And for me, in that time, cathartic to be able to do something like this with hundreds of other people. He has such a raw energy when he plays. I often wish I could go back to that night.
I love WTNV in part because I've found so much music I love that I thought I'd never be interested in. I remember listening to this and at first thinking "ehhh, I'm not so fond of today's weather" but by the end of the song I was smiling like an idiot. I'm really fond of this song :3
+luvkirby4ever Same here! I just bought a whole mess of weather from iTunes. "Closer" by The Tiny didn't impress me at first, but it's really grown on me after a few listens.
also same! Lately I was thinking where my love for folk music had come from and after a bit of thinking I am pretty sure it was all the gorgeous music in WTNV's weathers that I heard growing up. I love it sm
If you EVER get a chance to see him perform live.... seriously drop everything and go see him. It's hard to describe, but he has a way electrifying the entire venue. No matter how drunk and dull the audience is, like a tectonic shift, everyone is moved. It's his mission to connect with every last person there to see his show. I've never seen anything quite like it my (not so short) life. Wonderful magical guy is Jason Webley!
P Heresy Two years late, but I couldn’t agree more. I went to see Amanda Palmer perform at Tipitina’s, and he played this on the accordion. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. It was like the air was shivering and swelling around us. Just amazing!
I saw him in 2015 and I cannot describe how it felt to be in that room, with him and the audience. It was unlike any other of the many many gigs I've gone to.
Yeah, totally agree with you there. I went to a WTNV live on stage in the UK with one of my friends from college. I've never really got into WTNV even now, but I went at the time because she was really into it and I was excited on her behalf, plus happy she wanted to share tickets with me. I enjoyed the performance despite not knowing some of the ongoing stories that WTNV had, what with not being a regular follower... but man, Jason Webley just made it. I'd never quite seen a singer like him (especially enjoyed the playing guitar with knives bit, that was awesome), and he just blew me away. The songs that resonated with me the most was definitely this one, and Pyramid, but I've gone on to listen to his other stuff too. You're right in saying he is magical.
I grew up with jason webley playing in the background, my mom loved playing him, i have dance while the sky crashes down memorized, not to mention his drinking songs and his cover of hey ya, he has always played his accordion like a guitar and i live for it
+That_Girl_from_Math It sounds like they're howling every time he says "the Moon". It made me wonder whether they were cued or something. Makes me want to go to a live show.
I can understand that this awesomest live... But it is also awesome here on TH-cam. And it would be awesome on my playlist, if I could but purchase a proper recording of it. So, you know. Please take my money, dear Mr. Webley!
There's something intrinsincally Waits-esque about him, and it's not just a stylization or imitation. He really feels like the next coming of Waits. His first song on Night Vale, "Last Song", showed it the best, I think - not just an inspiration but a genuinely similar sensitivity.
"I Made a Promise to the Moon" by Jason Webley lyrics I’ve starved my days, I’ve drowned my nights I’ve run campaigns against the light I’ve been the liar, I’ve lit the fire, Died down, I’ve shrunk back from the fight I’ve got this feelin, This suspicion, This conviction Something’s shiftin And I’m liftin up my feet to take the step I’m ready now! To let myself change colors with the leaves Let the wind come shake me down! Deliver me closer to the ground- I made a promise to the moon. Now, outside this window I see all the other boxes Box-shaped drivers, Box-shaped cars, Those little box-shaped lives that I could live I know the shape of this room, I know these walls, I know this tune I know I’m stalling and I’m gonna turn the page So show me how! I can weave my way into a tight cocoon Then let it push me inside out! I’ve made a vow, I’ve made a pledge, I’ve made a pact, I’ve made a promise to the moon! *instrumental break* I’ve starved my days, I’ve drowned my nights I’ve run campaigns against the light I’ve been the liar, I’ve lit the fire, Died down, I’ve shrunk back from the fight I’ve got this feelin, This suspicion, This conviction Something’s shiftin And I’m liftin my feet to take the step I’m ready now! To let myself change colors with the leaves Let the wind come shake me down! Deliver me closer to the ground- I’ve made a promise- Show me how! To weave my way into a tight cocoon Then let it push me inside out! I’ve made a vow, I’ve made this pledge, I’ve made this pact, I’ve made a promise to the moon!! I’ve made a promise to the moon!! (x3)
This is one of the few songs that's been recorded live but that only adds to the song's quality! you can really /feel/ the emotions in it! I'm scared a study version might not be as good
when a song is improved from being played live, or sounds good even on low quality and scrappy sound, thats when you know the value of the song is in its imperfection. like tom waits, it sounds kind of horrible but its so lovely for that reason
Saw this down in San Diego in 2014! Totally forgot how fucking rad this performance was and now it's all coming back to me! everyone howling like wolves every time he said "moon" haha, what a fun time.
My partner discovered Jason Wembley at Glastonbury we had gone separate ways for few hrs to watch and experience the festival when me and my friends caught up with her she was stood in a huge circle beautiful flowery hippy skirt sun tanned and singing drinking song with webs and crowd was an amazing find both to discover Jason Wembley and reunite with the love of my life 😩
I saw him in Cuba back when i lived there, i even got a picture with Amanda Palmer because i went to see her, and i discover Jason, i cannot describe it but this guy feels it when he sings, everytime he step of the floor i got the chills. And now is one of my favorite singers
honestly if he ever makes another album he should just ask the night vale crew if he can put this recording on it, no studio version could ever live up to this
Yeah, I was next to the guy that got called up (the murderer), and when we all howled to "I made a promise to the moon" I got chills~ (oh and the sad story about that lady... I don't remember the name, but it moved me quite a bit) :'D
Myranda Spark I think her name was Margaret, she was the woman from the 'Pyramid' song. I went with my friend, we both felt really bad for the guy who got chosen, he looked as if he wanted to sit back down :')
Saw him perform this song at the AZ event. Thankfully, this song has a fair chance of coming out as part of his next album, which very well may include "Argo" and "Sing, Orpheus" etc. EDIT: According to someone who posted about two months after me, this probably won't be on his next album. Sorry.
I want to talk about what this song is about: I think it's about him reminiscing and regretting things he did in his youth I’ve starved my days I’ve drowned my nights I’ve run campaigns against the light I’ve been the liar I’ve lit the fire Died down, I’ve shrunk back from the fight note the fact that this is in past tense. I believe the first 3 lines are about him rejecting both light and darkness, a very teenagery thing to do. the next few lines are about him doing things that he regrets. Somethin' shiftin’ And I’m liftin’ up my feet to take the step I’m ready now! this is him maturing into adulthood and seeing his past mistakes. To let myself change colors with the leaves Let the wind come shake me down! Deliver me closer to the ground I made a promise to the moon. I think that this "promise to the moon" is a metaphor for something big he did in his youth that had big ramifications that he has to live with, possibly for the rest of his life. the reason he talks about the moon is because, well, it's the moon. It's huge, so if you don't keep your promises you have a big problem on your hands the first 2 lines are about him enjoying the good things about growing up, but I think the third is him remembering his promise and him telling the wind "take me back, I have some unfinished work to do" Now, outside this window I see all the other boxes Box-shaped drivers Box-shaped cars Those little box-shaped lives that I could live I believe this is about him asking "what could have happened?" with the box-shaped lives being where he could have gone if he hadn't made a promise to the moon to be more cinematic, I think he is looking out the window and seeing all of the normal, happy, unburdened people and once again regretting his promise Or at least that's how I see it, feel free to leave your thoughts
It's a shame Jason Webley's cover of Joseph Fink's song "These and More Than These" from the end of the same WTNV live show is nowhere on youtube, arguably better than the original no offense Joseph
Could you tell me which live show this was? I listened to it way back when, but cannot remember for the life of me which exact show this was. I desperately would love to hear him do These and More again.
I keep coming back to this. something about a room full of people who want to howl.
fuck yes
It was electric. And for me, in that time, cathartic to be able to do something like this with hundreds of other people.
He has such a raw energy when he plays. I often wish I could go back to that night.
@@baguadragon I'm confident there's howls in your future too, even if they look different x
me too. this song just pulls me back over and over like gravity.

GOD yeah, never felt that energy like with jason webley
I saw him perform - and perform this song - as part of a Night Vale Tour and it was a gig that changed me.
I can't find this song on Spotify, but I want it on my Playlist soo bad 😭
If I could thank Amanda Palmer for nothing else, it'd be for introducing me to Jason Webley. Hearing him on Night Vale was a dream come true!
Is she hot

the clapping is the background legit makes me so happy. like you can /hear/ this community united in their shared love of night vale. it's so sweet
One of my favorite weathers from one of my favorite episodes
I kissed Jason Webley after his gig at Bond uni on the Gold Coast in Australia about a decade or so ago. Still have the little signed flyer
I'd love it if he put this version on an album, I love the WTNV fans clapping and cheering :3

+A.M. Yeah, before the song we were asked to make the song even better by howling when ever he sang the word "moon"
Laura Mae Well it DID make the song better! :D

if tom waits is the hoarse drunk in the bar, this guy is the loony drunk dancing outside in the field under the moon
I remember seeing this live at the welcome to night live show for “the library” we all howled at the top of our lungs. It was amazing

I would love a studio version of this...I love it so much
I greatly want his rendition of These and More than These that he did at The Debate live show.
Absolutely amazing lyricism and energy. I love him.
Since the last time he was in Europe, with all of my experiences, one of the best performance and memorie, a concert can give you. Love from Hungary!
I was so happy when I first heard Jason on WTNV, hes one of my favourite musicians
Absolutely love this song. Gooooooossshhhhh so beautiful, and his raspy ish voice makes it blend wonderfully together. So good ♡
I wish I could be at a concert someday. love his music

Love Jason Webley!
Such a good crowd in the Manchester Albert Hall this year!! Was right at the front for this incredible artist
I couldn't agree more. He was fantastic, I have to admit I wish he sang most of his songs again 'I want a giraffe' is definitely one of my favourites.
Yeah, I was next to the guy that got called up (the murderer), and when we all howled to "I made a promise to the moon" I got chills~ (oh and the sad story about that lady... I don't remember the name, but it moved me quite a bit) :'D

Jason is incredible.
I saw him and Night Vale live in July and the vibe in the theatre when he was onstage was the greatest thing I've ever experienced
He sings a little bit like one of Hiram Mcdaniel's many heads. The Green one, maybe? I'm too lazy to double check.
YES! HE REMINDS ME OF HIRAM MCDANIEL'S GREEN HEAD TOO!
OH MY GOD
IT IS THE GREEN HEAD YOU TREACHEROUS STINK
He does Louis Blasko on the tours. I wish he traveled with them more!
Thank you for uploading! You should upload his cover of "These and More Than These" by Fink.
Is that a thing????!!!
Holy crap; this is fantastic!
THANKS FOR UPLOADING! I LOVED THIS SONG!

EDIT: According to someone who posted about two months after me, this probably won't be on his next album. Sorry.
I saw him there too! He was super sweet when he talked to some of us before the show and he has such a crest musical talent.
I love this song. It's so relatable.
welcome to night vale took me here
This song is one of the reasons I got hooked on Nightvale
I want to talk about what this song is about:
I think it's about him reminiscing and regretting things he did in his youth
I’ve starved my days
I’ve drowned my nights
I’ve run campaigns against the light
I’ve been the liar
I’ve lit the fire
Died down, I’ve shrunk back from the fight
note the fact that this is in past tense. I believe the first 3 lines are about him rejecting both light and darkness, a very teenagery thing to do. the next few lines are about him doing things that he regrets.
Somethin' shiftin’
And I’m liftin’ up my feet to take the step
I’m ready now!
this is him maturing into adulthood and seeing his past mistakes.
To let myself change colors with the leaves
Let the wind come shake me down!
Deliver me closer to the ground
I made a promise to the moon.
I think that this "promise to the moon" is a metaphor for something big he did in his youth that had big ramifications that he has to live with, possibly for the rest of his life. the reason he talks about the moon is because, well, it's the moon. It's huge, so if you don't keep your promises you have a big problem on your hands
the first 2 lines are about him enjoying the good things about growing up, but I think the third is him remembering his promise and him telling the wind "take me back, I have some unfinished work to do"
Now, outside this window
I see all the other boxes
Box-shaped drivers
Box-shaped cars
Those little box-shaped lives that I could live
I believe this is about him asking "what could have happened?" with the box-shaped lives being where he could have gone if he hadn't made a promise to the moon
to be more cinematic, I think he is looking out the window and seeing all of the normal, happy, unburdened people and once again regretting his promise
Or at least that's how I see it, feel free to leave your thoughts
Awesome song
I wish this song and Closer by Tiny were on spotify. So underrated!!!

whenever i come across it on the playlist i just have to hear it, it just riles up a little something in me

I think of my new baby girl when I hear this song.

I mean it's not like you're adding anything... You didn't even put subtitles in the video. 🙄
this song is better at 1.5x speed

mine too, so much soul in his songs. Love it!
