Japan, Taiwan and South Korea should be the only options for the Philippines. Dut bet on China for his own profit, and country has nothing to show for it. The abovementioned democratic countries are known for quality work, products, and investment. If Philippines can eliminate its scourge of corruption, improve its its infrastructure and offer quality free education, it should be able to become a major manufacturing alternative to China, and a remote services hub in the region. I dream of the Philippines becoming the Ireland of ASEAN. So please don't vote for the children of thieves.

The Philippines also helped 'build' Japan during its economic boom in the 60s and 70s. Sadly it was in the form of raw materials like wood, which fueled Japan's increasing demand for construction and industrial materials, resulting in deforestation and overexploitation on our end. The largest % of deforestation occured in 60s-70s.
My dad told me of when the government (who granted concessions to people like Enrile) cleared thousands of acres of interior forests, then flowed logs down the rivers where boats picked up them and shipped straight to Japan. Depsite being rich in valuable raw materials, his island remained one of the poorest in the country and became a hotspot for the NPA insurgency :

    • @MarcelinoDeseo
      @MarcelinoDeseo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

This is the problem with the Philippines' export, which is mostly raw material or basic materials. We do not have the capability nor the knowledge to process these materials to something more valuable, unlike Japan or South Korea (or to some extent, China) that process them, turning them to a more valuable commodities, like cars, processors, etc.

Yet the only reason people know about it is because of the freedom of journalism that we didn't have during the dictatorship era. That was common place before. The following years were not perfect for sure, but the forests were consistently growing in that era, with most of logging all over the country successfully being stopped.

My retired mother works before in the Dept. Of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR). As a child in the 90's, I always heard the initials JICA from my mother and how they always provide support to DENR. I remember whenever I went with her to the office, I always saw furnitures from Japan like tables and chairs that I only saw in J-dramas and always I feel impress how stable and sturdy they were compared to locally made or other foreign furnitures. Also if you see their office projectors, computers, even a simple stapler, there would be a sticker with JICA label on it. I remember aswell, my mother gave me a Pilot pen from Japan and my classmates in private elementary were so excited seeing it at the time.

Japan pays the highest to OFW workers. And they don't treat Filipinos like crap like other countries do. Filipinos just need to learn Japanese culture and language. In an agreement such as contract, whatever is the nature, both parties agreed to perform a definite thing in exchange for a consideration. The loan grant, pledge or donations in whatever form, Japan reciprocates, or has to pay war reparations that it had caused trajedy and damaged on the Philippines during World War II. That fact underlies the economic cooperation of both countries since the Philipines being agricultural had more resources, while Japan is industrial. That was the beginning of this friendly intercourse in commerce and trade. Now both countries knew and realized they need each other for economic purpose. Philippines provides raw materials, Japan manufactures and returns this as finished products. That was in the 60, 70s, 80s or even 90s. Now the Philippine industries keep on expanding Japanese help. Now with excellent roads and infrastructures all over the country under the build3 Program, the country's economy will boom as more products, minerals can be brought more easil to nations center of commerce that link the entire islands. The better part of the economic ties of both countries is absence of animosities as a result of war. Both and their people had move on. You can see survivors or war veterans in their twilight years salutes each other and hug like long lost brothers who are former enemies, during October 20 Leyte Landing anniversary. anniversary.

The Japanese Leader before he died and Japan completely closed down actually threatened Spain to a complete Japanese invasion if they don't stop trying to colonize The Philippines.
And even after that Japan tried to pay Spain 40 million pound sterling to free the Philippines but Spain refused... Only when Spain was getting kicked out of the Philippines due to the Revolution that they accepted America's offer at a more cheaper price, in which America the just colonized the Philippines again.

as a Filipino who once work in Japan, my though is.
Japan really help us. In the first Place they lend us a hand(money) for building projects. As I heard Philippines borrowed money in Japan for the project of train.. I don't know the detailed, I just read the headlines. They lend us a help and not someone else I don't care if they get some profit of the help they give but as you say Investment. They should have gain profit else you cant call invest.
Like Filipino Trainee at Japan its true that we get less wage than Japanese. But we are trainee and earn that much money that you cant earn in Philippines.
Our economy is slow in developing that's another fact not because of People but the Government. If Government is like Pres.Duterte then the country is long developed. If you question me about what he contribute? He make the Manila Bay, clean that no one had done.
He Wipe all the drug addict that gives bad impression for Filipinos.
    Etc. Etc.
Well My answer is Japan really Helped us.
    No!, It's Helping Us.
Because they lend us a hand that not other country had to.
They give a lot opportunity for Filipinos to work on their company.

Just to provide more historical context for this video: As much as this is true and that the Philippines is very much grateful for Japan's aid, let us not forget though that this "help" originally stem's from Japan's responsibility and reparations for the damages it did to the Philippines during WWII. Remember that the Philippines sustained huge damages being the centerstage of the war between Japanese and Allied forces in Asia during WWII. Cosmopolitan Manila, which has been called "the Paris of Asia" before WWII, was the most destroyed city in Asia (2nd in the world next to Warsaw, Poland). JICA came about because (or in the spirit) of that responsibility/commitment.

Once Japan dropped its imperialistic principles, they became one of the Philippines best friends. But this probably would not be the case if it were not for my American brothers stepping in during WW2. (My eldest brother personally) How many Philippine people here think the American people should have stayed away from the Philippines and allow Japans attacks? Japanese military allowed their men to rape and pillage the nation according to my father in law. My Philippine wife's father was damned happy to see MacArthur return!
But, unlike my predecessors, I see today the Japanese people as some of the highest character people in the world! Standing along side their equally impressive Philippine Brothers!

Philippines would not be attacked by Japan if not for America colonising it after Spain. If Spain continued to oversee the Philippines via Madrid, Japan would not touch the country.
As for their principles, they have not dropped any of the imperial principles, and have no intention to drop it in the future. Most of their principles still dates back to Edo period, Japan's longest time of peace.

@Florida to Dumaguete if u meant the GEACOP where the Philippines was included, it wasnt bcs of Japan's territorial expansion. GEACOP's vision was to drive out all western powers from East and Southeast Asian countries, and make an economic and military alliance. Western countries didn't want equal footing against other countries and sees them as inferiors, and Japan didnt want this; they wanted Asian countries to be as equal as the west. This didn't turn out too well, and escalated quickly into war.
let me explain: if America (US) didn't intervene with Philippine's independence from Spain, Philippines would have achieved her freedom. Japan would still include the country as part of GEACOP since its purpose was an alliance between East and SEAn countries. The country wouldnt have received attacks from Japan but instead have gotten help to prosper.
now, as written in history, that didnt happned. what happened was that the US took control of the Philippines, delayed its independence, exploited its resources, and sacrificed hundreds of thousands of filipinos. After the Pearl Harbour attack, Manila declared her place as an open city to avoid confrontation from the Japanese as their only targets were American military bases in the country. Japan gave Manila its independence. Then in 1945, US landed on Manila and things got bloody.
if you actually look at history, the US had caused a ton of problems outside its country, meddling with other countries' affairs.

@@-...................- And yet here we are today, the most powerful country in the world and the Philippines is free. My father in law is a 90 year old Philippine, and the horrible stories of degradation and torture done to the Philippine people by the Japanese was only because of their association with the US? I think you misunderstand the relationship the Philippines has with the US. Its easy to claim what the Japanese did to the Philippines by claiming what they *would* have done! A convenient argument. And our scrape with the Philippines was short back then. And nothing as violent as the Spanish occupation. Maybe it was the heavy previous Spanish influence who we stood against? Those influence's were Spanish Philippine after all.
But I agree with you, the US is not crystal clean, but lets not pretend others are when the history says exactly the opposite. I have no beef with the Japanese people or the Chinese people. It's their governments who fooled them. Just like Canada and even the the US both today.
But in my experience as an American MP, rape, pillaging, and murder is rarely overlooked by the US military. The Philippine history people here tell me during the Japanese occupation before MacArthur returned, the women and children had to be hidden from the Japanese occupiers because they were being raped and tortured by their occupiers.
And meddling in another countries affairs was and will be acceptable when that countries suppressed people ask for shelter in a storm. We meddle with dictators and dictators do not like it. Too bad for dictators, eh?
No, we Americans are not always right, like how we treated Japanese Americans during the war. Or how we mistreated the American Indians during the Trail of Tears. But we do not hide from our worst misjudgements, because we know, if you pretend you never make mistakes you are destined to repeat them.

@@newrenewableenergycontrol5724 i agree most of your points. no country is clean, every country has had blood in their hands.
things i wanna point out: within the 50 yrs of american colonisation in the philippines, they've done more harm than the 333 yrs of spanish colonisation. they've killed more filipinos than the spanish did. in fact, PH didnt need any help from the USA during the process of her independence from Spain nor did they asked for help. so this "And nothing as violent as the Spanish occupation" is a big NO.
"and meddling with another countries affairs was and will be acceptable when that countries suppressed ask for shelter in a storm" the thing is, PH didnt want the US to take sovereignty of the country but the latter refused which led to war.
sangleys, insulares, indios, now called filipinos, were in harmony. most of them are. that's when the USA intervened and history was once again rewritten in favour of the USA, the victor.
i know my history, my people's history, and my country's history. good thing biden isnt meddling with russian affairs right now, if he did it would led to another world war.

The title is a bit insensitive given the fact that the Japanese were the ones who destroyed Manila during WWII. Many innocent people were killed and many historic buildings were destroyed. The "help" that they gave us later on are basically "reparations" for the destruction that they've done in the past.

All conflicts aside, China and Japan are doing their best for Asia. They are changing the way what the west consider as "help". Instead of giving alms, they provide infras so more countries can be self-sustaining. While Japan focuses in SEA esp the Phil, China focuses on poorer countries like south, central asia and africa. Because these Countries are very rich but were often just exploited by non other than, yes you guest it, the west. There are controversies ofcourse like debt trap etc but I think the main goal of these initiatives like the belt and road, is so Asian countries and Africa can start relying on each other like how EU and US does.
