Interested in the remark from the backpacker who said he initially hated India when he arrived. I am 71 and had the same feeling when I first went aged 27. Since then have been back at least 25 times. The country has a cultural depth that even many Indians can't see. These day I can tell young Indians stories about their country from 40 years ago that they do not fully believe. Cannnot say I love India, the feeling goes deeper then that and am also conscious of the various downsides, especially as they impact Indians. On almost every visit I discover or reinforce some aspect of the culture. Particularly like Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, and other south Indian classical dance. Also it is a genuine democracy with excellent and well written newspapers. The people are very hospitable and have a great capacity for affection, which is a high quality, especially in a country with so much pressure and competition for everything material. I could go on and on, but my main advice to people going for the first time is to read up a bit, then take it slow when you arrive.

"you are treated like a god everwhere you go" - that's our motto Atithi Devo Bhavo (sanskrit) which translates to Guest is like god, and there actual mythologies built around in India about how people have sacrificed their well beings for the comfort of guest. however, it is so unfortunate how the vast majority of people only visit the western sides of India, that too only Rajasthan, Gujarat and Bombay and Kerala in the south. Try the eastern parts too. Come to Bengal (the sweetest part of India), visit Orissa. Read about its history. Visit Vizag and Araku. And the North Eastern parts of India are a complete chapter all together. I promise you won't be disappointed. And don't forget.
