Fox already has a largely bad reputation. The problem is alot of people save all their skepticism for Fox and watch all the other channels largely uncritically.
The hits on the n64 I think were the first console releases that really all showed how to make great use of gameplay in a 3d space. As one of the transitional systems into the realm of 3d gaming, it was a masterful success for Nintendo. I get where Joe is coming from since though since it was the first Nintendo system that very evidentially put low priority to 3rd-party devs, a large library, or offerings for gamers that preferred mature-themed games. PS1 outclassed n64 by far on all of these things. But saying n64 is one the worst systems seems far from deserved imho. Appreciate him saying Ocarina is a masterpiece though.
Also agreed, there shouldn't have been such an abandonment for 2d games during that era, glad you could still find so much of that on PS1. n64 overhyped 3d due to being the new thing.
I've played Golden Eye a couple months ago. It was horrible, I was actually ashamed of myself for spending so much time playing it as a kid. The only game for N64 that holds up for me is Mario Cart
Agreed on Goldeneye, definitely doesn't hold up, though people talk about the n64 fondly they always seem to mention it, it was definitely of it's time. For me, Starfox64, Ocarina of Time, and Banjo Kazooie, all hold up very well. Super Mario 64 also deserves honourable mention for me since it was the 1st-great 3d platformer and the player controls were ridiculously well designed.
