Loved this show as a kid. Didn’t patronise it’s audience, featured incredible guests and was genuinely educational. They’d never make it now! Thankfully we have Rick Beato et all to carry the mantle

I'll ignore the spousal abuse, and focus on the first section :-)
2018 had Sky TV in the UK make a programme fronted by Steve White (Paul Weller's drummer, called The Art of Drumming. Four episodes of some of the most amazing and diverse drummers in the world talking gear, technique, styles, inspiration etc.
As someone who's never struck a drum themselves, I say it's a fantastic watch.

I'd like it if the BBC brought back a series like this but aimed at older people. We young people are sick to death of all TV programmes being aimed at us. Give the oldies a chance. Combine advice about drum head tension with a feature comparing equity release schemes or walk-in baths. It's all very well filling the old people's heads with chorus pedals, whammy bars, jumpsuits and hair gel, but what about commodes and stair-lifts? Come on BBC! Give the oldies a chance.
It was in the studio audience for episode three of Rockschool that John Lennon first met Paul McCartney. They had each brought along a Deirdre Cartwright album to get signed and these two young crop-tops from Liverpool recognised they shared a musical taste. The rest is history even if this bit was made up.

  • @Mudge07

A lot of gauges info to absorb from each musician in this series, and a later joined by a keyboard player in the next series (I remember the MIDI controller episode most from a technical viewpoint). Wilco’s point was well made, I think of John Martyn’s preference for lowered tunings and thicker strings that many wouldn’t even get a note out never mind create beautiful music. Volume and emulation techniques can now compensate for that heavy, boomy, natural acoustic sound and allow those with differing hand size/strengths to access their techniques without the same gauge strings.
Ian Paice, as a premier drummer, showing mastery of the volume dynamics through simply reversing the stick, although his playing is more about rudiment mastery and use of supreme swing and syncopation. Karl Palmer’s point along with Geoff’s about how to quickly quality-check a stick on the lower end of the market is of good economic sense and probably saved some wasted time on mis-hits or breakages during performance.

They toured the TV show at live venues in the eighties. I met all three of them after they played at the Lead mill in Sheffield. Henry was a bit intense but chatty , Deidre was slightly aloof and Geoff had clearly had a few sherbets. All of them were cracking musos.

What Wilko Johnson says about heavier strings may be true if you mostly play with a clean or clean-ish sound, allthough the difference may not be as huge as some would have you believe. If, on the other hand, you're a hard rock/classic metal player and use lots of distortion, heavy gauge strings would muddy the sound up quite a bit. 9s are common, even 8s have been used (yes, I know that there are forms of metal which has a different approach, but... you know...). Just ask people like Jimmy Page and Billy Gibbons...
Plus... not everybody has bear-claw hands like Stevie Ray Vaughan... I went back to 9s myself after starting to get problems with my left hand and arm, and it saved my ability to play. And, quite frankly, it's easier to get a good sound, in my opinion.

Given all the crap music out there where everybody thinks they are producers and create 'beats', I think the BBC should recreate this show, give kids a chance to get excited by actually learning to play an instrument.
