F350 7.3 Towing 14,800 Lbs!

- Today I towed almost 15,000 lbs on my 99 F350. I was well within limits on the trailer as well as my hitch rating. If you guys like these these type of videos let me know! I am very happy this truck pulled the weight so well.

That's a clean and low mileage 99! I run a 99 F350 with the 7.3 for hot shot trucking...love it. My personal truck is a 7.3 also. I use a 30' gooseneck trailer that with equipment weighs 6600 empty. I haul up to about 8500, but have hauled loads over 10k. I do not turn off the OD for hauling except when coming DOWN a hill. Keep in mind, that these trucks can haul far more than they are rated for...but stopping is the issue. If you are in a wreck, even if it's not your fault, they may make you liable if you were over. That means 11,200 lbs. between the drive and steer axles, 4850 on your steer axle and 7060 on your drives. To get the most out of your load capacity, you have to get weight out of the back of your truck because of the low GVWR (11,200 lbs.) that your truck has. Equip your truck and trailer as you would have it while hauling, full fuel, tools, food, wife, dogs...whatever you would normally have in the truck. Chains, straps etc. in your trailer. Go to a CAT scale and weigh. Compare those numbers with your rating sticker on your door post which should be the numbers I posted unless it's a 4WD. If it came with the extra leafs in the rear, the rear GAWR would be 8250. But that doesn't help because even though you will have plenty of rear axle capacity, the weight you can add to your truck is much less.
Lots of people don't realize this, they act like their old diesels are as good as newer ones and can pull the same. Maybe they can, but they can't legally or stop as easily
@Mr B no they can't man, gvrw is too low, brakes too small, frames too flimsy, and as previously stated engines too weak.
Now that being said yes of course you can put in time and money and strengthen frames, big brake kit, engine overhauls. But even at that point you truck then costed more than a newer one, arguably isn't as reliable, (a 7.3 that daily tows making 1000 lb ft of torque won't last)
But even after all of that your gvrw is set in stone, so if you wanted to tow for a business with your truck you couldn't surpass your ratings. Meaning all that work did was go to making it really good at hauling 3k in the bed

A bigger transmission cooler will be a great investment. Transmission’s are a weak link.
Yes I’ve already upgraded it to a full size Mishomoto transmission cooler. As well Amsoil transmission fluid.

My use to be boss had a zf6 7.3 that looked exactly like that! It was clean like yours and he hotshotted with it.
I have a 2000 7.3 zf6 but it's srw.
Nice truck and trailer. I pull 20,000lbs+ often with a 03 7.3 and it does fine. On flat ground 70mph no problem with no tune.

@@THECONDOR98 yes auto with a transgo tugger kit. 3.73 gears most I have pulled is 27000lbs of bales and trailer. I think the 7.3 has enough power for any pick up and if you need more than that I guy should be looking at a 3 ton or bigger.

@@THECONDOR98 Its a shift kit made by transgo that is calibrated for pulling. It helps the 4r100 tranny out they are not the toughest transmissions so the kit is a good investment.
@@THECONDOR98 For a 7.3 that is being used for pulling the upgrades I would do are as follows, Transgo tuggers kit, transcooler, Wicked wheel 2 turbo wheel, afe stage 2 with progaurd 7 filter or any cold air that filters well, and either a piece of pipe or highflow muffler in stock exhaust system. That would be a perfect setup and I would just run stock tunes It will last forever and pull awesome.
Best dully ever the one that came with those wheels. I just got me a f250 7.3 ext cab long bed not a ford guy bt a fan of ur dully and the 250 i got for work. Needs tlc bt sure like the way it sits work truck by the way.😏
If you're going to do the long hauls think about getting a gooseneck trailer. The bumper pull trailers you're recommended to tow up to 10,000 lbs but a gooseneck you can tow up to 12,600 lbs. A bit more stable towing experience also.

@@Ka_Gg If you're looking to pull a 2 car trailer with either 2 medium sized cars or a couple SUVs, then you should be fine. If you're looking to tow 2 half ton pickups that is gonna make it work but it still could do it if you're on fairly flat terrain.
If you're looking to tow a couple half ton pickups up and down mountains on a regular basis, then you better be ready for some repair work to something down the road. That's just a lot of weight to pull by the time you figure the weight of the pickups themselves and the weight of the trailer by itself also.
If you're wanting to tow a couple 3/4 or 1 ton pickups at the same time, I would not push it that far. That's just asking for a problems.
It's all relative though.
If you're looking to tow on mostly flat terrain with a few hills here and there, you can tow more. But get a heavy load with more hilly terrain, and it's gonna make the engine work hard.
I'm not saying it couldn't handle 12k to 14k behind it on a regular basis. It probably can even though that's more than the manufacturer's ratings. Manufacturer's ratings are fairly conservative.
But you start wanting to put 15k to 16k behind that on a regular basis, and it's just more weight than it can handle.
I would look for a newer 2010 model with the 3-valve V-10 if you're gonna do it. At least those are newer and the 3-valve version has more ooomph. Nicer interior and etc..

You only need to turn overdrive off if it’s repeatedly shifting in and out of it if it can hold 4th you don’t need to worry about it
Without a trans temp gauge and a load this heavy I wouldn’t recommend this, Fluid is pumped by engine speed. Temps can climb surprisingly high under a load in overdrive due to lack of fluid movement and that can hurt the trans . I do agree with your advice about shifting if you have a way to monitor temp. Worked at the dealer when these were new, most trans failures were from folks who towed with overdrive and heavy loads. Go with what the owners manual recommends, transmissions are expensive

Hi sorry for the late reply, yes it does I believe on this generation it doesn’t come standard from factory you may have to buy it separately and install it yourself or take it somewhere but it’s very simple.

Yea, once I get to highway speeds and it's straight without hills I tow in overdrive with no problems.
That's nothing for the old 7.3. We used to pull directional drill machines with a single wheel axle 350 at the last company I worked for. Not to mention the full dump trailer loads. Sold me on em. I, a Chevy man, now own a 7.3 lol

No I don’t think so. I think as far as capability sure.. but not consistently because you would have to have the engine revved up pretty high constantly which would also result in very poor gas milage.

You can tow it all day with V10 only think you need to do upgrade your torge convertor to bullit prove I'm a car hauler I have 3 cars trailer and 2001 V10 dually I drive 24/7 pulling 15000 to 18000 pound all-day

whats that hitch called, i haul watermellon and I need one that can be raised I could guess I haul around 19k lbs plus.
That’s a weight distribution hitch your using. Without the equalizer bars it’s rating is probably only around 5-6k lbs. it’s going to fail and leave you in a bind if you keep using it without the equalizer bars

I am in school but part time I haul cars, I used this truck for 4 months straight no issues. Ofcourse I had maintenance done like oil, transmission fluid, brakes and rotors etc. I love this truck but its definitely not a rolls Royce, its very loud inside, its old, the interior is outdated and very basic, the exterior clearly looks like an older truck.. that being said if you’re looking for a cost friendly (subjective) powerhouse truck I strongly recommend this truck. I would definitely say to upgrade transmission cooler if its an automatic as well as put a 4 or 5’’ exhaust to help with egt temps. You might also consider getting an aftermarket air intake like s&b for example to help it breather better too. If you’re going to use this truck for work and heavy hauling I would also strongly urge you to get a transmission temp gauge installed, as well as an EGT (exhaust gas temp) sensor installed. its basically cheap insurance for the truck because it will give you information on its live health. This truck is definitely old so dont expect it in any way to have the speed and power of a modern truck.. however it also only costs about 25% of a newish diesel truck!

I'm looking to buy a 1993 f350 idi. In your opinion what do you think the max tow weight is?
In my opinion I would suggest to look it up and stay within the limits for legal limits. That being said this truck is technically rated for 10k pounds and just 2 weeks ago I pulled 17,300 lbs so I definitely grossed over 22k lbs. The truck performed perfect

I worked at a couple Ford dealerships when the newer Powerstrokes first came out and the older idi engines just can't compare. And now days, it's not even close. The torque of the newer trucks is double what the first Powerstrokes had and is almost triple what that old idi had.
You have to look at things from a perspective of when (NOT IF) things break as well. Although the older idi engines were pretty reliable (for the most part) they were not completely 100% unbreakable. So, what are you gonna do when it breaks down and you need parts? You're not going to find any.
The thing is, those older 7.3 idi engines could haul a horse trailer and sure, you "can" haul 10k to 12k at a slow pace. But if you want to have enough power to haul, don't waste your time and money on that older truck and just get a 2002 with a 7.3. They are easy to find and cheap at anywhere from $5k to $15k depending on condition. You can usually find some decent ones with 150k to 200k miles (which is nothing for those 7.3 engines) for around $8k to $10k.
@@eldridge201 idi's arent as bad as you're describing them to be, as well as first generation powerstrokes. idi's are gutless sure but the first generation powerstrokes were moderately powerful, get good mileage, and have plenty of parts available
Hello, you probably did not need the air in the bags. I bet the back end doesn't drop more than two inches with that load on. Give that truck the whip, it is not gonna care. Diesel engines do not like to be run at the low end of their rpm range. I like the trailer, but I think that long of trailer needs another axle. I have a 25' equipment trailer and that is my max with only two 7k axles. My 25' was a special order bumper pull that was never picked up at the dealership so I paid about 60% of what it cost because it sat for a year waiting for the guy to pay for the trailer. Long story short he lost his deposit and I got a heavy duty trailer that is built to the hilt on the cheap. The trailer has double stack 8" frame ahead of the axles and 8" frame to the rear, dual 10,000# front jacks, 20" spring assist 5' drop down ramps. I put heavy duty wheels and tires on it and am using the cheap ones that all trailers come with as spares for all my other trailers. With a trailer that long you will like the goose neck better. No you can just use normal cargo insurance. I don't do this is a business. No I don't need a cdl because this setup is only 25k gvwr (14k trailer 11k truck) if it was over 26k gvwr then I would.
Get steel rims if you are going to do this all the time. Those Alcoa rims have a life expectancy.

You removed the thermostat?
No, it still has the thermostat. However I think It may be an aftermarket one which opens earlier allowing the coolant to stay lower because even pulling heavy loads It never heats up past the middle.
I have pulled some real heavy enclosed car trailers in my 7.3 Excursion in the Rockies and never had the temp gauge even go to the middle....they are over cooled in my experience....meaning they are built for it.

It is amazing how many older diesel people haul WAY over their rated weight....until you get into an accident and then get dropped or lose your a$$ because someone proved you were overweight. You may be able to TOW the weight, but stopping it is the issue. Be smarter.

No it’s completely stock besides a down pipe and exhaust. I’m planning to get a cold air intake for it soon but I don’t want to put a tuner on it.

That was originally the plan, I want one but I found this bumper pull trailer for really cheap at the time. Is it true goosenecks have a much better turning radius?
@@THECONDOR98 oh yea they turn a lot quicker. It's a bit of a learning curve but getting in and out of places can be easier in my opinion on a gooseneck.

@@THECONDOR98 goosenecks can be jacked way further than a bumper pull can, thats one part of the turning radius. The other part is that you can have the same length deck, but where part of the deck on gooseneck is over your truck, making your overall shorter for the same deck length. In bed hitches are also inherintly more stable than a bumper pull due to the attachment location. The gooseneck is in between all 4 tires where the bumper pull is like a 6ft or so lever acting on your wheel base. They dont make anti sway or weight distribution hitches for this reason.
