Sad that people were treated so bad. My cousin was one of them. He came to visit and our Aunt and Uncle would not touch him or let him in their house. I let him hold my newborn son. I knew it would be ok. This was 34 years ago. He came to say goodbye. He passed about a year later. Other family members treated him bad too.
Broke my heart!💜. He was a kind and sweet man. Would have never hurt a soul.

I remember this story i was a young wife and mother. I watched that episode of Oprah and was appalled by the people who condemned Mike. John and I knew a person who had contracted AIDS also, so we knew more about AIDS than the average person. I’m pray he found peace in his short life. I’m also glad that people learned from his story.

Thank you for sharing this story. I'd never heard of this story. It reminded me of the story of Ryan White, the young teenager in Kokomo, Indiana who contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion in the 1980's and died in 1991 at the age of 18. People treated Ryan much like they did Mike. If you like to read, I'd highly recommend the book "Ryan White: My Own Story." People were terrified of AIDS at that time. They weren't sure how it was spread or contracted. As a result, they were downright cruel to those who had the disease. Hopefully society has learned thanks to the efforts of Mike and Ryan.
Thanks again for sharing this story. And rest in peace, Mike.

The anguish in his eyes tore at my heart. That poor man. The feeling of being rejected is all consuming. AIDS hits a very sensitive emotional spot for me. I was given up for adoption and when I found my birth mother in the early 90’s she was battling full blown AIDS. I had seven years to get to know her even though I lived on the east coast and she lived in Dallas. Her boyfriend had been unfaithful to her and contracted the disease and then spread it to her. I was in the hospital room when she breathed her last breath. It still makes me choke up. AIDS had such a stigma back then. The prejudice and hate was unbelievable. I’m glad that medicine and treatment has evolved and improved. I’m sad that my mom and Mike didn’t get to see this happen.

Those were scary times. No one knew for sure, all the details about AIDS. There was alot of fear.
As of 2018, about 700,000 people have died of HIV/AIDS in the United States since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and nearly 13,000 people with AIDS in the United States die each year. With improved treatments and better prophylaxis against opportunistic infections, death rates have significantly declined.

This was so unfair this was so wrong and I blame the government for not educating the public I put full blame on the ones in control for letting things get out of control so much that this poor man was treated so inhumane . It literally brought me to tears to hear the rage in those people who were irrate over this young man's disease and was most certainly not the blame. I'm sure he's at peace now with his mom and not being mistreated for a sickness he had. This is what happens when you throw a horrible disease out for the public to contract and only give no kind of true knowledge about how you get it and anything like that. Leaving the publics mind to go crazy and then you end up in this situation where a young man with a illness can't even cool off in a public pool without being done so bad he had to leave town in his time of no doubt devastation with life and being ill on top of the whole damn town turning on u .. you rest in peace now Mike, and your story will never be forgotten but that it helps us understand and gives us positive knowledge to never treat man or beast like you they treated. God bless your beautiful soul

Glad you covered his story,I remember watching him on Oprah and I couldn't believe how awful people were to him. I was in my early teens and I remember I cried for him,he seemed like such a gentle kind person. I was raised in a christian home my dad a deacon and my mom in the choir but they would never have treated anyone like that. I was raised only God can judge and to treat others as you would have them treat you and his story was one of the first times I saw "Christian" people treat someone with such cruelty. Of course through the years I have seen it more and more and I still have a hard time with accepting how much hatred and cruelty there is in this world. After this I always said to my mom that maybe this is hell and we are reborn and have to repeat our time here until we get it right.. I hope his family knows that many of us were touched by his story and did care, and I hope he is a much better place❤
