    I love what you said about unhauling and the underlying racism concerning the criticism against Marie Kondo. I personally don't think books are sacred, if I don't want to own it, I won't own it, why do other people feel like it's such a bad thing? I agree 100% that the idea that to be a tour book love (tm) is to own lots of books and never share it and stuff. It's so privileged and classist and condescending.
    Thank you for putting my thoughts into words and everything else you do for this community.

      In some religion they are though. In Hinduism for instance books are associated with Goddess Saraswati , the goddess of learning. So it's considered a blasphemy to tear up a book or even put your feet up where books are kept. For instance a table. You can't throw books across the room either like some of these book tubers seem to do for effect. *cringe*

      G. Chatterjee the whole point here is that not everyone has to do a certain thing they don’t want to do to their books.

    nonetheless, i loved this video. im so happy you got rid of all those books (ps thanks for passing a few off to me ;) ) and i also love that you're not putting pressure on yourself to NEVER buy books again! i think the concept of buying reading and passing them off is great
    ps i agree with EVERYTHING youve said about marie & the unjust backlash xx

    Honestly, I was so confused about the fact that book Twitter was honing in on letting go of books in the show since it was such a small portion of it. I feel like the people with qualms regarding Marie Kondo's practices are completely misunderstanding her perspective and reasoning behind the KonMari method. It's not about minimalism like a lot of ppl are interpreting it but rather asking us to make conscious decisions about the things that we buy and own. And because American culture is so rooted in consumerism, Westerners are seeing it as an attack on their way of life. I read an article recently that revealed that while Marie Kondo is massively popular in Western and European countries, her reception in Japan was very mild because her methods are already commonly practiced there.
    Also, I'm sure some of the backlash had to do with the fact that she's Japanese and non-English speaking. I've seen so many horrible comments bashing Marie for not being able to speak English and needing an interpreter, as well as making fun of her for greeting her clients' houses. These people are so close-minded and cannot think beyond the Western perspective and I think that's what frustrates me the most.
    Thanks for speaking up about this and creating a dynamic conversation regarding this topic Monica!

    I would be really interested to see which Books bring you so much joy that you decided to keep them ♥️
    I loved Marie Kondos Show and was really confused when I read about the backlash on twitter. I felt like these people who were angry watched a completely different show than me???
    Keeping things that you need and that make you happy is a beautiful thing I think and damn my drawers look so good now 😁
    For me personally its quite easy to get rid of Books and especially Manga that I read and didnt love, but its very difficult for me to unhaul Books that I havent read and admitting that I will never read them 😕

    The backlash to the KonMari method on book twitter is one of the silliest things I've ever seen and I'm pretty tired of seeing it on my feed. It's not like she's going to show up at your house and force you to get rid of your books. If you aren't interested in de-cluttering than don't worry about it! Silly.

    I think it’s interesting you’re going to continue buying books rather than going to the library. I’ve definitely used my library more in the last few months and it’s helped me stop buying books that I don’t really love or need to own!

    • @cozymonica
      @cozymonica  6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      i actually use my library constantly - particularly for digital books, which makes up a large portion of what i read! i * have * become much more selective about what i buy (i.e. i haven't done an impulse book outlet haul in years - not that there's anything wrong with that!) and where i buy (i tend to avoid amazon and try to purchase from the indie bookstores throughout the city).
      as a personal choice, i also like to support the book industry in this way when i can, especially when it comes to buying stories by diverse authors and using my dollar to show the demand for those stories. again, that's a personal choice and not one i think everyone should do/can do.

    • @courtheartsbooks
      @courtheartsbooks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As a Librarian, I love this comment. I view purchasing books as a way to support authors I truly love and want to see write more content. Sometimes I'll buy a book after reading it or starting it as a library book. I would love to see more booktubers utilizing and promoting the library. ALSO yes, the backlash is 100% ridiculous. No one is forcing anyone to follow her method, I don't get it.

    I completely agree with you. I haven't watched the show yet, but I read Marie Kondo's book last year, and based on what she said in it, I have been so confused by the reaction people have had. I'm planning to watch the show soon and konmari the sh*t out of my house. I own a lot of useless stuff, and I've realized that the clutter kind of stresses me out.
    I think people are quick to get defensive if they feel like someone is telling them the way they're living their life might not be the best or healthiest. I've encountered this when trying to eat healthy too. Even though I don't care at all what other people choose to eat, they get defensive and try to justify their choices to me. Eat whatever you want! Buy as much stuff as you want! I don't care. 😆😆

    I read Marie Kondo's book like 2 years ago and I ended up getting rid of about 300 books because of her. I love owning a ton of books, but there comes a point where you don't need that many. I still have about 500 books on my shelves, but now I feel more at peace with what I have. People were getting so ugly on twitter when she seems like such a sweet woman. She just wants to help make life easier!

    It is just stuff! You go girl! If you do not love it love it, don't buy it. I love books and I love big book shelves, but I cannot stand clutter. I have switched to e-books. Clutter free and I can have as many as I want since they are all housed in the cloud or on my computer. And there are so many options to cut cost. E-books are so much cheaper and you can borrow 600,000 from your local library. Do not feel bad for your decision. It is awesome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!!

    I gotta say that this video is awesome and I agree 100% with everything you have said here. I also did a massive purge of books because of the KonMari method and seeing the manufactured drama is just so aggravating. I think a lot of people view their books as an extension of them, so for someone to "say" that the books are "bad", then it means that they are being called "bad" and lash out.

  • @ellie-ci5of
    @ellie-ci5of 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I agree 100% with everything you said, Monica! I think the people who are taking Marie Kondo’s (misquoted!) words as a personal attack need to do some serious self-evaluation as to WHY their owning books is an aspect of their identity. “I like books” isn’t a substitute for a personality.

  • @chburashka

    i haven't read her book but i totally agree with you. ive seen 4 episodes so far, and my impression is that you try to keep things that bring you joy. so if lots of things bring you joy then that's ok. there was a guy who had like thousands of cards and he just organized them a bit better n didn't throw any of them away bc the collection brought him joy. and the wife had tons of christmas decorations and the method made her realize maybe she doesn't need to be so excessive and got rid of some stuff but kept the things that she liked the most so like, mari doesn't seem to force anyone to be 'minimalist' just be more thoughtful in general and i think this type of thinking really is helpful w impulse purchases as well so im a fan of hers personally. i feel like its a very realistic approach to keeping your space clean and organized and if the message went over ppls heads then they should actually try watching the show once bc i feel like maybe a lot of ppl just jump on the hate train n don't even bother to watch the show or read the book they just assume a bunch of stuff based on whats spread on social media.

  • @bookishbree

    The realest talk tbh, my Mum recommended me the book she wrote a few years back (what a subtle hint) and I really appreciated the points she makes and it was really good to refer back to it and reassure myself about what I want - and nobody else. I've loved watching the show because it's reminded me that I don't need to own books that I don't love to prove to others that I'm a REAL book lover. Even books that have a lot of sentimental value, I don't need to own because I am very fortunate to live in a place with a wonderful library system and I try to write down my personal reflections when I read books in my notebooks and those I do keep :)
    I think she's making a fantastic point about the consumerism of the modern world and I've never seen this backlash against other minimalist "icons", most of whom ARE white Americans. Especially since if you watch the show she NEVER insists people get rid of things, the people involved have complete control over their choices and she's not even with them most of the time???? Because of the "homework" (which I love xD)
    People have made a snap judgement because they're thinking in a very binary perspective - if someone says their way is good then they're also saying every other way is bad. And it shows a serious lack of... I'm not even sure if it's a lack of critical thinking or just plain common sense at this point!!

    Amen sister. Watching her show actually mad me realise how much I appreciate my books and that they bring me so much joy, I’ve decluttered a lot in my room due to minimalism and Marie Kondo but I haven’t unhualed any of my books because they each bring me joy 😊 I’m glad you found what works for you. Aw I loved this! I’m almost through the series on Netflix and honestly I don’t understand the controversy? I agree with you completely on everything you said and congrats and good on you that you got rid of so many books. I only recently, as in yesterday, found out about the backlash towards Marie Kondo and I didn't understand it either. She is helping people be free of stuff essentially but people have to say something back and I agree with you, it's probably because they feel threatened. I'm always happy when people declutter or minimise their stuff as it's like 'good on them for doing that'. Ever since reading Marie's book back in 2016 I have been the most happiest with my clothing, books, and other things I own as I tend to have mini decluttering sessions throughout the year. Loved this video Monica :)

I love a minimalistic life because I feel like it keeps me refreshed and helps me feel like i'm in charge of my own things. It was so good to hear your discussion and see that following the KonMari method was helpful for you. I am honestly shocked, as you said, that people have retaliated so strongly against her because I really don't think she deserves it. All she has said, very wisely I might add, is to keep things that spark joy. Anyways, thank you for this discussion and for speaking so honestly and openly!

    I can totally relate to your experience growing up. I owned only a few books and most of them were hand-me-downs from my mom’s boss’s twin daughters who were a few years older than me. I think only maybe only four/five books I owned were bought by my parents bc it was a luxury item. And now that I’m older I’ve definitely bought a lot of books, mostly to compensate for what I didn’t get as a kid. A few months ago I got rid of almost half of the books I owned bc I realized that they weren’t bringing me joy. Now I only keep books on my shelf that I love or I know I’m going to read. I love Marie Kondo’s method of things sparking joy. It’s become really helpful even when buying or not buying books.

    Honestly, Marie's book changed me! I read it a while ago (March 2017) so I feel like I need to re-read it to refresh my mind haha. When I started I didn't own that many books, but since then I've discovered that books bring me so much joy (and the buying began)! Whilst I do love books, I know that not every single one on my shelves brings me joy. I am really bad at buying something with so much hype to read it, but the tbr is so big I don't get around to reading it. This year I am starting to read the books that have been on my shelves the longest, to sort out the books I actually like/don't like. The ultimate goal is to have bookshelves full of all the books that bring me joy! I already know I wouldn't be happy getting rid of so many books, I have done a mass declutter before, so I kind of know that I am happier with a large collection of books (if that makes sense). Even if I only get rid of like 10 books, it just means that more of the content of my bookshelves will be the books that bring me joy :)

    I totally agree with everything you said. When I first read Marie Kondo’s book I got rid of most of my books. Like a hundred or so books. That was three years ago. Since then, I’ve realized that having a home library with shelves of paperback novels actually does bring me joy, lol. So I started to collect them again. But I’m much more mindful of the physical books I keep and buy, and I use my library and kindle much more. I love Marie Kondo, I think she’s a wonderful person and she’s changed the way I think about buy and owning stuff.

    Yes! Up until about 5 years ago I was a huge library user and would only buy books I really loved and my favorite authors. I still use my library, but mainly through their digital services. Marie Kondo's show came at a great time for me (I'm moving in a couple months) and now I get to think about "did I buy this book because I think will enjoy it or because it's hyped and popular?"

    I've not seen Marie Kondo's show, but I definitely connect with what you said about moving. I can imagine that moving across the UK is less of an ordeal than across America, but moving three times in three years made me a lot pickier about what I choose to keep! Plus there's my flat is small so there's such limited space on my shelves that unless I really enjoyed a book and think I'll reread it then I regularly give bags away to charity shops. I know some people who keep books on their shelves that they didn't really enjoy, and that's always baffled me slightly!

    Thank you for bringing up these points! I'm guilty of buying books just to have them because I've seen so many booktubers with shelves upon shelves of books (and there's nothing wrong with that!!!) but I was starting to feel bad for not being able to keep up. I've noticed I started keeping books I didn't enjoy or probably won't read simply because I want to have the aesthetic of a big bookshelf on the off chance I maybe start a booktube channel someday. I realize that's not the right reason to keep them if they're not bringing me joy. Thank you for being so transparent in your reasonings behind getting rid of your books. Second: I complete agree that if MK were a white woman, the criticism against her work would be very different (both in content and in frequency). Implicit bias exists in every person, and there's always been such a strong aversion against non-white success (whether conscious or not). A million likes for this video!!! Honestly, this was so refreshing to watch 😍 I think your point about the anger being culturally-based is spot-on and that really saddens me. I haven’t watched the show but I have read parts of Kondo’s book and she focuses on ‘what gives you happiness in life; if certain possessions no longer give you joy or if there is no sentimental attachment to it, then you should get rid of it’ which I 100% agree with. In 2018 I got rid of 100+ books because I did regular unhauls and I felt a huge weight lifted off me. I used to get stressed/anxious about the amount of books I had on my shelves, and the huge tbr pile which never went down so I had to be honest (and ruthless) and get rid of those I simply wasn’t interested in. I still buy books but on a much smaller scale, and my collection now is a lot more manageable and reflects my tastes 😊

I collect moomin mugs and have a ton of them and I am not gonna get rid of them - so I decided to get rid of my other mugs that I didn't think had sentimental meaning to me. I'm in the process of packing everything up to move across Canada for the second time and going through my things, specifically my books, and getting rid of stuff has been so freeing. I used to hold on to stuff, like old paperwork or worn out clothes, because I had so many issues with attaching so much sentiment to everything I owned. I moved a lot as a kid, but I knew as long as I had my stuff, it didn't matter where I was or what new city I was in. So getting rid of stuff was literally impossible for me. It took a lot for me to get over those feelings. But now I have things that are actually important to me, instead of toting around and storing garbage.

    I think this is a lovely response to such a controversial topic. I personally have a lot of books and they bring me so much happiness I feel so calm and content just look at all my books and all the wonderful stories that have touch my life but I totally agree that if you didn’t enjoy a book or you have no real attachment to the book or if you just feel that someone else would get more joy from it than you then yeah get rid of it, donate it or pass it on. I don’t think anyone should be judged based on if they want to keep lots of books or if they have no books what so ever. I think that people forget that what’s right for one person isn’t always right for everyone else. Personal preference and differences are what makes life interesting.

    Marie Kondo is such a heavenly angel and I will fight anyone who criticises her! But I decided not to get rid of my books 📚 because I think I genuinely do get joy out of my collection, and I unhaul the ones I don’t want to keep pretty regularly anyway. But I’m lovvvving watching other people unhaul!

    I loved Marie Kondo’s show! After I finished watching it I cleaned out my bookshelf and my closet. I’m now more selective with what books I do purchase and I go through my bookshelf regularly and get rid of books. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to unhaul books, I always donate my books to my library! It’s not a bad thing to own hundreds of books if that makes someone happy then they should keep doing it! I on the other hand only want to keep books that make me happy. 🥰💗

    It's so good to hear this from someone who participates in booktube. I was shocked at some of the negative discourse I saw about Marie Kondo/decluttering your personal library. You would expect academics and generally well-read people to see understand that the quantity of books one owns is not a representation of that person as a reader. I'm very unsentimental about books and have zero qualms passing them onto a friend, library, or the secondhand bookshop. If I know I'm not going to read it again, it feels right to let it go and allow someone else a chance to experience it.
    But as someone that wants to create more reading-centric content, I do find it difficult to break into the community without having a bunch of physical books to use as "props" (for lack of a better term) in videos and instagram photos. I primarily read library books on my ereader, so when I finish a book, I can't take an aesthetic bookish pic for the insta~. But without a color-coordinated wall of books behind me in my thumbnails or a well-curated bookstagram, it is a bit of a challenge to find an audience. But I'll keep making my content and someone somewhere will stumble upon it.

  • @theGhostSteward

    Another perspective here.
    I was so confused how people can misunderstand her discourse before the books that I cannot think about other explanation if "click bait" it's all bait! Marie Kondo was a thing for a long time, I read her book when I was in college like 5 or 6 years ago and at the time the criticism are so much constructive.
    I'm happy with the reception here in Brazil, the only hard critic was an guy who say that her method is silly for Brazilians cause we already don't own so much stuff but I'm pretty happy for us, as an 3 world country, to have access to all the organizer bloggers and Marie Kondo that are doing an great job for a long time and finally are recognize for it cause I, as Marie, really believe in educate the people for consumption before they start. I was like you, had a hard childhood and became frenetic buyer when adult. Now, 8 before my house is still a mess but better and I make the more serious changes in my life, today I'm working in the "kondomization" of f the rest of stuff (you don't need to became a minimalist but I really want to be at last some). Boi, that was long. Love your channel bye

    Points were definitely made, Monica! I loved this and your explanation and your thoughts on all the backlash that she is getting for simply telling people to get rid of unnecessary stuff is so thought out and interesting. I haven't really heard or seen any negativity towards her, just praise and people starting spring cleaning early but I believe you. I agree &100% believe it has to do with her not only being Asian but not being an English speaker. We often criticize and ignore someone if they can't speak English. It's disgusting and Xenophobic and needs to change.
    I have a lot of books that I need to get rid of because honestly I get most of my books from the library. I have SO many books from goodwill and library sales & I'm just not picking them up to read. It also just seems like a waste to spend $20 on a new book that I will only read once most likely. I can better use that money to go to Disneyland (i have a pass & it's expensive). Personally, I think the whole full bookshelf behind you for booktube is a little overdone. Some of my favorite "booktubers" just literally talk to the camera in a place that they clearly feel comfortable and it just feels so authentic.
    Also, I LOVE seeing RJ in your background each video. A little piece of BTS always makes me happy lol and I have Koya on my bed so I relate :)

    Agreed about the Xenophobia. I do not understand the ridiculous amount of anger towards Marie Kondo. To me, she is just this tiny ball of light and joy, that needs to be protected at all costs! My husband and I moved into our first home, right around the time her show came out, and her method was life changing for me! I've never been happier in my own home than I am now. I, personally, don't like to have more than one bookshelf worth of books, because it's just too much to deal with, especially if you move in the future. I totally agree that the people who get so irrationally upset about the idea of getting rid of books are just pretentious and think it makes them look more intellectual by owning them. I mean, the point of books is for them to be read. Once you read them, you don't NEED to keep them. If you want to, that's totally fine, but you don't need to. I only keep books I KNOW for sure, I will want to read again some day. I mean, why bother having a million books just collecting dust if you're not going to re-read them? Don't get me wrong, I love the aesthetic of owning your own Beauty & the Beast-esque library, but in most cases it's not exactly a realistic goal for most people.

    Yes, I loved this video and everything you said. I've read Marie Kondo's book and I really liked it. I'm a huge book collector but she literally said that if something brings you joy you shouldn't get rid of it? So like, I kept all my books? No trouble.
    And I get it, it's fun to dramatically gasp and faint when someone suggests getting rid of books, but it should be clear that it's fun and all in good nature. And getting a false quote out there is not fun nor is it right. Also, it's not like she is the only person to ever suggest getting rid of stuff ... I really don't get why so many people were so offended??
    Take her advise or don't. No one is forcing you. I love owning a lot of books and that is fine. My best friend prefers ebooks because she doesn't want to use the space she has for books. That's totally fine too and she is no less of a reader, book lover or anything because of it.

    Thank you, Monica. The backlash and hateful things being directed toward Kondo blew my mind. I do think she comes across a little harsher in her book but I am thinking that is due to translation because she is a total delight on the show. In fact, doesn't one of the couples own a lot of books? I don't recall her tearing them from their hands. People are so offended over the dumbest things. I still have a ton of books but it made me realize I was holding onto books I didn't love and was keeping just because I liked the cover, which was a little silly once I kept thinking about it.

    One of the reasons I generally dislike watching hauls or unboxings (of anything) is because of the privilege inherent in buying things one doesn't need and how that sometimes makes me uncomfortable and because of financial struggles I had growing up and somewhat still presently (despite the fact that I'm now making my own way)...so I'm glad you addressed that privilege. Of course I just don't watch those videos, preferring to watch tbrs, most anticipated, books I want to read this year and recommendations. But yeah I love books but in my case simply not having the space for them and moving a lot (and very limited finances for any books within the last couple of years in particular) just means I don't own many and do my best with libraries.

    And I agree, what people decide to do with their own stuff is their own business. If she helps people, that is awesome, and if you don't want to follow her advice, then don't XD

    Thank you so much for making this video. I run my own library at a local high school and I have acess to tons of books. And when I was younger I could sit and read for hours (something I miss) but I have changed alot over the years and I have always loved been read to or listen to an audiobook witch have now become my personal preferance - I am also a very slow reader so it means I can listen to several books aweek and get to the once I relay want without it taking a month. I have been scared of starting booktube because of it - but since I am an educated libarian and I do run my own library for teens I think I can add a lot og value to book descussions. I am home sick at the moment so I will watch the show and also have a look at my own shelfs. I hate an enpty book shelf but if half the books in there dont «spark joy» then what’s the point. So thank you for sharing and good luck in your own prosess. :)

    I totally agree with what you're saying. I've noticed the show get attention but I have not seen it, have not read her book, and have not looked at the reactions to the show. It doesn't make sense to me that people would react in such an... angry way, I guess is the way I'm going to describe it. No one is FORCING anyone to get rid of stuff. You said you were already thinking about it and her show was more of an incentive for you to take action. I think it's more so helping people. People are getting rid of thing they don't need or *want* and hopefully their belongings are being donated to those who do need it and can't afford it brand new and full price. It's such a personal thing and everyone is in a different situation. If people are happy and content with getting rid of some of their stuff, why would anyone complain?
    If I'm thinking about getting rid of something or want to go through and get rid of stuff, sometimes I think I might have second thoughts after I've already gotten rid of stuff. And that is something that has happened in the past, where I got rid of something that I couldn't just buy again and I regretted getting rid of it. Since then, if I'm unsure about something or don't want to make a decision too quickly I'll set it aside in a place where I can see it and recognize thoughts of regret if they appear or if I end up going back to the item and using it- obviously it depends on the object(s). If it just sits there for a couple weeks, it's probably something I should just get rid of.
    It's like people aren't thinking of altering Marie Kondo's suggestions and are thinking of them as rules instead of guidelines. I also think there are plenty of other sort of self-help books/shows that should probably be getting more criticism than something that has the message of getting rid of things you don't need/want and owning things that bring value to your life.

    I totally agree! I've watched some of the episode on Netflix, haven't read her book. But just from what I've seen, she just wants people's homes and lives to be filled with positive energy! This concept is what allowed me to start unhauling books. If I look at a book, and I get negative feelings from it (example: I didn't like the book) then WHY WOULD I KEEP IT?!?!?! I don't need that negativity in my life! Now I look at the books I've read and it's all "I love this story" vibes! I love owning books I've enjoyed reading! That being said, I totally get why you got rid of all those books. If I had to downsize dramatically, mama's getting rid of the books and doing e-books! Lol.

  • @nash5262
    @nash5262 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with everything you said in this video. I reached a point in which I owned too many books and have spent the last two years getting rid of books in batches. I currently own ninety-something books. While I feel like that’s a good amount to keep, most of the books I own don’t make me happy. I’m currently trying to reread some books to see if I’ve actually lost all my love for them. If so, I want to pass them on. I don’t understand the mentality of having to own hundreds of books in order to be a valid reader, or the idea of having to treat books like they’re life’s biggest treasures. If someone likes to do that, great. But it shouldn’t be a standard that we should hold everyone to. If for some reason I had to drastically reduce my book collection, I could keep three and be happy. That doesn’t mean I’m not actually a reader.

  • @raychumon
    @raychumon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    i have not been involved with this stuff, so i don't have much specific detail on it, but i do know that there's been an increase in minimalism and living a 'minimalistic lifestyle', and that this is largely something only privileged people can afford to do. for example, a minimalist may look at a mug of pens they have and say "i don't need all these pens! i'll get rid of them and just keep one". it goes with the unspoken reassurance that if they happen to lose, break or use the pen to its course, they will be able to then afford to buy a new one. no sweat, right? but this isn't everyone's reality, and the tendency to hoard things is seen more in poorer families. obviously this is just one very basic example, and it applies to many other things. and no, i'm not saying ONLY well-off people do minimalism, i'm just saying it's a trend with them for a reason.
    of course, beyond sentimental value it is difficult to apply this concept to books. poor people might be more willing to hold onto what books they have because getting them was difficult and so they're treasured, or they may not know when the next time is that they'll be able to buy another book. you mentioned having lived in similar conditions so i think you'll get what i mean. it's not an excuse for any aggression, but it might be the reason for why people respond with anger.
    but again, i do NOT know anything about this situation beyond what you said in the video and this is just my take based on my understanding of surrounding topics. so what i'm saying could very well not apply to it, i cannot be sure.

    • @cozymonica
      @cozymonica  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      for sure! i think the key difference between the konmari method and minimalism is that it's not about just owning less/aesthetics. basically, marie kondo is just asking people to look at what they're carrying with them and to just reaffirm if those are things you truly want to continue holding on to moving forward. and then she gives you tips on how to best store those items so they can be put to use! much of the backlash i've seen towards konmari and the books thing has actually come from people who see physical ownership of books as an indicator of intelligence/being a real reader, which i think is 1. super ableist and 2. very privileged.

  • @ghoulishlee

    for me, i love owning a lot of books. however, i only keep books that i love or that i think i'm going to reread. i constantly have a pile of books that i know i don't want to hang on to and i'll let my friends look through those to see if they want any of them before i donate them to a local charity that helps kids learn to read. i get rid of clothing ALL THE TIME because for me, clothes aren't a big deal. I also grew up poor and basically got a new shirt maybe twice a year growing up, so i don't hold a lot of value to clothes, and i know there are other people out there who need the clothes that i don't find myself gravitating towards. i think everyone has things that they know they want to hold on to because they make them happy, and things that aren't a big deal for them to get rid of. i've watched marie kondo's show and she always says that the point isn't to get rid of your belongings, it's to find the one's that make you happy and hold on to them. i don't know how that sentiment flew over so many people's heads. i think she's a genius.

As for books, my books bring me joy and the ones that don’t get unhauled. I don’t have a Twitter so I didn’t even know there was backlash. Congratulations on being able to cull your books to an amount that works for you! I think some people have taken Marie's ideas the wrong way and I agree that there is a feeling of racism which is ridiculous. She only wants to help people and remind them to live intentionally. I have a lot of books and I know others who do as well and others who don't or can't own a lot of books. As long as it brings them happiness, that's really what matters. I also think it's ridiculous about the stimulus of having to own a lot of books to be a real reader. It's not the amount of books that makes someone a reader nor is it the content. It's reading when it brings you pleasure for whatever amount of time, in whatever format and in whatever setting is comfortable/enjoyable for that person. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

    YES. yes yes yes. I have always purged my books each year so I was baffled by the backlash from those in the book community when she says ideally you should own 30 or less. Great discussion video!! I’ve been baffled by the huge pushback to Marie Kondo’s show and her ideas I saw on twitter.
    “Not being able to mind your own business”- good quote because same??? why they so bothered? To a less extent it reminds me of a “omg you can’t write in your book; you cant deface books in any way, they should be in pristine conditions”. This convo is constantly brought up. And every time I’m like ??? don’t mark library books or books you don’t own,?but if it’s your book - do whatever. I can’t believe it’s a such a difficult idea to comprehend. Same with Mario Kondo’s ideas. It seems like many people have very rigid conservative ideas on how to be a reader... if the rigidness and conservatism only went into bookish sphere... anyways. Great video!

    This is a fantastic video. I totally agree about the underlying xenophobic connotations of all the hate surrounding Marie Kondo has gotten. I’ve yet to watch the tv show but I’ve seen others who clearly haven’t watched it being extremely defensive. I think in a way that’s the way of the internet a lot of the time, where we see one thing and take it and run with it and get defensive. Sometimes it’s valid, but I don’t think it is here!
    Read with Cindy has done some great videos about why she doesn’t buy books and honestly since she started doing them I’ve been considering my book buying habits, too. And after watching this video I’m even more inspired to revisit my bookshelves and be honest with myself about what I don’t want anymore. Cindy did a great video where she added up how much she would’ve spent on books she got from the library in 2018 if she’d bought them and the result was so jarring to me. Books bring joy from the reading experience primarily and whether you bought them or keep them afterwards is entirely your prerogative!!
    Great video xxxx
