Thank you for helping us carve a very nice head. Missed you Saturday at the show. I could not find any of your decoys either I was looking for a couple of other friends and I could not find them either. IT was a nice show, but the crowds were heavy and I just could not get through the people. Bruce Brandeberry Maumee OH
This is one of the best if not the best head carving videos I’ve seen n TH-cam. Well done sir! I can now see a better way to go about a few things. Thank you!!
Thanks Tom for your videos. Unfortunately I think carving decoys was a dying art and you definitely need to bring it back. Your carvings are awesome. I just started getting back into it since I’ve retired. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you so much.
Thanks Richard. This TH-cam channel is one of my own retirement activities along carving and family. I hope this will help inspire folks to give carving a try. There is something really satisfying in creating with your own hands!
Tom, thanks so much for posting such great instructional videos! I am an old guy, a new carver, and an avid waterfowl hunter. My goal is to hunt ducks over decoys I have carver with a retriever I trained. Question - after you paint a gunning decoy with acrylic paint ( Golden, Jo Sonja, Liquitex, Traditions) do you do a final topcoat of an acrylic matte glaze/varnish?
Love your videos, I’m just starting in on this new hobby and am building some diver decoys. Where would I find templates? I’ve managed to free hand and get relatively close but a template would be helpful.
Thanks for your note! I have a couple of videos on my channel about how to make your own patterns and will put the link to one of those below in case you want to explore that. For purchased patterns I would recommend Pat Godin’s web site at godinart.com th-cam.com/video/DhqIc_Wcm84/w-d-xo.html
Thanks very much for the comments! I am getting a lot of pattern requests but always encourage people to make their own patterns. I did a separate video on how to do that if that would help with your project.
@@tomchristieart thank you for the reply I’ve tried using the projector tracing app but a lot harder than it looks :( I’m wanting to do a English partridge head walking stick & a mallard one aswel. Your videos are the best out there for attention to detail keep it up !
@@Wildlife102 Thanks again. One other thought for a miniature pattern would be to find a good digital profile picture and adjust your printout to match the size you want to create. Print that and then cut out the picture with an exacto and use that as a pattern. Just another possible approach.
Tom, I'm new to decoy carving. I have my grandfather's Pat Godin pattern books but wanted to ask you where you get your life size measurements from? Thank you
Great Video Tom. I like those tips you gave to make the head more distinctive. Thanks again for sharing with us.
You are very welcome Brian!
As always, expert work expertly taught. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks very much JD!

My grandfather carved decoys. I would love to do it at some point! This a great info.
Great! I hope you’ll give it a try Brandon!
thanks for the instruction, you make it look simple.
You are welcome Todd. Sometimes I think the video editing makes it look easier than it is! 😁
What an excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks Fern!
Thanks, great video I’m learning alot!
Thanks Kent!
Tom, you mentioned you get the cork from Willie McDonald, but where do you get the cedar? Thank you.
Bruce Brandeberry
I got a 1”x12”x4’ piece locally from Menards Bruce
Hello. Awesome work again. I can not wait to see the sealing video on the gunner. Hope the cork is the same progress as wood? Thank you. 🙏🏻
Should be very similar.

Sorry I missed this question you had from a while ago Richard. Yes, I seal my birds with Testor’s Dull Cote after the acrylic paint has dried.

Glad you liked it! Thanks Hunter.
Absolutely fantastic videos. I’d love to be able to find out if I can print the patterns ? I want to make my son & dad a walking stick many thanks

How do you kep such a clean shop!!!!
Thanks Daniel. When you’re doing videos for others to see it encourages a little cleanup! 🤣
I'm thinking about getting a micromotor. How do you like your Gesswein? Anything you would do different?
Thanks!
I like the Marathon a lot. It has been reliable and didn’t cost as much as the larger more sophisticated units.

I use Pats books for a lot of basic dimensions. If you have his books that is a great place to start!
I want to carve a traditional upper Chesapeake bay style decoy, can you tell me the best books?
I don’t have a good handle on carving the traditional upper Chesapeake style decoys Dylan so I can’t provide a good recommendation on that.
new carvers - WATCH YOUR HANDS. Not fun running over your finger with a foredom powered bit
Good reminder ! Couldn’t agree more.
