Missed your posts. Great start-to-finish! For me, it was a three-month project, but my first time. Your website and videos surely prevented the ordeal from being much longer. My appreciation for you cannot be understated. God Bless!
Nice details Mick. I converted my 78 bus using your channel (and your parts) as a guide over a year ago. Still runs like a champ. Looking forward to more videos!
It's really not that bad once you get your head around it. Definitely watch all the stuff on this channel, Mick is a great guy and will help you out however he can. I'll be doing a video on my swap soon as one of my goals was to do the swap for as low budget as possible. Subscribe here first, and then to me, and you will have it all covered :) Cheers
You do some lovely work and you make it look way easy which I know that its not, thanks for sharing all of your tips and tricks its very inspirational, also looks like you live in a very lovely part of the world, cheers
Thank for the well edited video! I like how complete it was, but very concise as well. This should help a lot of people get a more clear picture of doing the conversion. I have an 86 Westy with a 06 Impreza 2.5L! Woot, woot!
You make it look like 30minutes work! 👍 I’d love to convert my Auto T3/Vanagon to Subaru power. I used to own s T2/Bay to which I had a small 1.8 Subaru motor fitted and THAT was a blast 😁
You may want to use Jegs 5/16" SS fuel line coil cut to fit and eliminate 90% of that vulnerable fuel hose. We use a tool by Graham tool ($150) to put a bubble in it. Get rid of the plastic lines to tank. Today's shit fuels kill fuel hose. I have maybe 12" of fuel hose on my 3.3L Westy conversion. Looks good.
My brother has one with the 2.1 MV engine. With auto gearbox, it does 18mpg. At least with a Subaru conversion he'll have a lot more fun doing that kind of mpg.
You are absolutely brilliant. Make it look so easy. I wish you could do a Subaru conversion for me here in Australia. The wiring harness is what I consider rocket science ! Too daunting. Could you do the harness for me if I sent it to you ?
Hey Jai, Is be happy to convert your wiring harness. You can see more info here: www.busaru.com/busaruparts/harnessconversion Email me the details of the project and we can work something out. Busaru@busaru.com
I dream about 1 of your conversions in my bus (70 Bay) but alas the money gods have looked the other way thus far. My comment is more of a question. Have you ever seen or thought about the suby transmission in a conversion also? I just saw an Ausie channel building one for rear engine and was curious. Thanks for the awesome content and when I win the lotto you are me and mamas 1rst stop!
You can do this for a 1984 Vanagon? Who do I call for an estimate? I am having a van built in California with a 2.1L engine but I live in the mountains in ETenn and the hills here can be tough for an underpowered vehicle. Thanks Kim
Hey mick - i am in the middle of my own syncro conversion, truly an invaluable video, can you walk me through your fuel routing? it looks a bit different from what I've seen elsewhere. Also any tricks on routing the harness back to under the rear bench? are you squeezing it through the tiny window in the sheetmetal in the engine bay?
Great channel and great help..What subaru engine can i put in my 81 vanagon gl?Going to use your channel as a guide to do it also do you sell the wiring harness?
not sure on syncro (engine and trans sit lower and back a little), but they fit in normal vanagon. The 6 is almost the same size and it uses a timing chain, not belt...guy told me they are almost the same size and he was converting them to run with Man trans. THey only came with automatics...

Thanks mate, I know it’s been a while. Life has a funny way of setting priorities ;) thanks for always commenting.

Combustion Junction thats so cool man i really want a busaru but, its intimidating to do an engine swap with no prior experience.

Thanks mate! I appreciate the kind words and I’m looking forward to more fun video projects too.

Mick! Glad your back, syncro looks great! Just finished mine a little bit ago. Thank you for the videos and the harness work.
Thanks Michael, I know I haven’t made many videos lately. Just been cranking on some boring projects ;)

I am so close to doing this conversion with you're kit, hopefully next month to my 71 Kombi.
Rad! Hit me up when you’re ready for some guidance.
say..quick question ,would a 2001 outback with EJ25 work for a donor?
My brother has one with the 2.1 MV engine. With auto gearbox, it does 18mpg. At least with a Subaru conversion he'll have a lot more fun doing that kind of mpg.
nice work. i changed my 1.6 jx td to a 1.9 aaz td with higher boost and diesel flow i get about 80-90 hp
Well done Mick. You are the master.
Oh stop!
Glad to see you back. Looking foward to more vids
I can’t wait to finish up the dang Beetle, just been on the back burner.
Busaru Thought you sold that?
Awesome work as usual.
Thanks Wyatt!
Awesome video! I would love to put a Subaru in my 63 Vw bus depending on how much cutting if any needs to be done.
On a 63 you’d definitely have to cut the engine tin apron. Tough call if your bus is in pristine condition.
sounds freaking awesome !
Great job!
That’s going to be a cool project.
Mick, at about the 7:45 mark you said you used the stock housing for the computer. Is this a VW part or a Subaru part? Thanks.

I need 1 of these
My kind of place, drive up and get greeted by VW Vanagons and a bubble window bus!
what about a speed sensor? A/C piping?
You can do this for a 1984 Vanagon? Who do I call for an estimate? I am having a van built in California with a 2.1L engine but I live in the mountains in ETenn and the hills here can be tough for an underpowered vehicle. Thanks
Kim
How's the transaxle holding up with a powerful 2.5 in there? You kept the vw transaxle right ?
Gorgeous. Just gorgeous! A/C?
Is it possible to keep the Subaru 4x4 system completely or is not possible. ?.
Awesome video, Have you had any issues with syncro gearbox with all that extra hp?
Hey mick - i am in the middle of my own syncro conversion, truly an invaluable video, can you walk me through your fuel routing? it looks a bit different from what I've seen elsewhere. Hey Dan, email is probably easiest to talk about that. Email busaru@busaru.com
Hi I've done the subaru conversion but my rev counter doesn't work how do you synchronise the counter to work with the subaru engine mine is the Ej25
Hermosa transformación.....
Great work, have lil problem with my conversion was a 2.6 now has a 4y Toyota engine init how do i huk rpm wires up and wr on the engine
Powerfull 🤜
Great channel and great help..What subaru engine can i put in my 81 vanagon gl?Going to use your channel as a guide to do it also do you sell the wiring harness?
I like almost anything from 1990 on. The 2.5 is definitely the most common these days though.
Busaru will a 2.4 liter 5 cylinder diesel engine from a 97 eurovan fit into an ‘81 vanagon?
Very nice
One day we are putting a Subaru in my 74 westy. I live I. Durango and met you at your shop looking at a t4 engine.
Oh nice! I think I remember that!
How much do you charge for this swap?
Nice video!
Thanks Trevor
Where did you get the tachometer fix module
Where do I get a tach conversion? I have SVX Syncro and the tach never goes above 1.5k rpms. Is it the resistor behind the tach ?
Well, I offer one on the Busaru.com website, but you can play with the resistors on the back then get a 6cyl to 4 cyl converter.
How long did this conversion take?
It would have been done in a long week if I had all the parts. I had to source a bunch of oddball pieces and it sat idle for a couple weeks.
Nice. Will an H6 fit it ok ?
not sure on syncro (engine and trans sit lower and back a little), but they fit in normal vanagon. The 6 is almost the same size and it uses a timing chain, not belt...guy told me they are almost the same size and he was converting them to run with Man trans. THey only came with automatics...
So how long did that take to do?
The quickest I’ve done a swap was 6 days. I had this one at the shop for 5 months, mostly sitting while I was finishing other projects.
There are a lot of VAG engine solutions, (more than 10 excellent petrol engines at various horse power). It is a blasphemy.
The Syncro Heresy
That’s really funny ;)
You are right. Heretics are funny people.
Requires "some mechanics knowledge" otherwise, you may be lost in the clouds ...
First to comment! :)
Always! ;)
Eeyup! Your VW Syncro with Subaru engine is awesome!
Sad.
