Hold the axe near the head on 1 and 2, then let your forward movement carry the head forward as you slide your hand down the grip on 3 and 4.

i do an almost entirely different type of dancing (melbourne shuffle), and while one could swear it's entirely footwork alone, all the same points apply - and sometimes i do just bounce on the spot - usually for 4 or 2 beats; Doing nothing works so well that it's a dance move itself.

The thumbnail reminds me of that page from Mr Bean's diary when he started taking dance classes in an attempt to impress Irma Gobb, the woman who works at Highbury district library. Anyone remember that book? I used to read it over and over as a youngster.

You will never know how much this has freed my thinking about swing style dancing. Thank you, thank you. I come from the south and southwestern part of the USA. The dancing styles in the southwestern part are dances that are basically the Texas Two Step and several variations of two step. Dances where if the steps aren't mirrored there will be pain. I could never do dancing like you demonstrate, I always prided myself on being able to follow anyone. I could learn the steps but I couldn't figure the cues one gets from the person leading. OMG! I don't have to. Basically if we are both doing A or B then if our steps aren't mirrored, step for step, so what. The occasional difference adds a little cool to it. I feel like Dorothy. It was there all the time.

A request if I may; a Ministry of Silly Walks Tutorial. You'll likely be sued but it'd be funny for the three minutes TH-cam didn't excoriate the footage.

It's one of my favourite dance styles to do. I like the zaniness to it, the aesthetic, the jazz/swing music and the overall freedom you feel with it.
I'v never done partner Lindyhop (never had a partner to do it with), but I love doing solo style. Like Al & Leon.

I love this. Great advice! (I'm at the tuning my swing-out tension stage of life at the moment, so this )
    video hits close to home)
Wish instructors would focus on weight changes rather than footwork. It would make it a lot easier to figure out how to lead/follow moves!

The problem is, to be able to get away with those adaptations requires a very deep understanding of where you need to be on which beat to make it work. Sure, i can do anything I want for four beats, so long as i am in the correct orientation with my weight on my left foot at beat 5 for the next move.
There was a time I really wanted to learn to Lindy hop, complete with all the throws and aerials, but I never made it happen. Boo for me.

My method of learning the Lindy involved getting drunk before I tried it.
We called it the Jitterbug, but I did learn the proper Lindy in Brooklyn NY. (After getting drunk.)
