The sad fact is that we as Allies are going to need a bunch of big gun ships like this again to retake all of the fortified Chinese Islands in the South China Sea when War does come. And I should say that I really liked the cast credits included all actors names no matter how big or small a part they played in the movie and weren't tagged as such like Sailor #1 & Sailor #2 etc.💯
I decided to watch another maritime war movie after watching the Battle of the River Plate last night, thinking about my GG Uncle Leo and wasn't disappointed. History books and google give insights and although this is a movie it does indicate what many suffered. The blitz must have been horrific for so many. Mr. Scottie, thank you again for such a marvelous movie, even though I cried a bit. Stephanie. (Long weekend, all up to date with my swat and time to relax before bed and a good book, a privilege given me by all those who fought for freedom)
Noel Coward served with the state department in secret during the war and was later assigned to entertaining the troops. This movie was well received in America and he was given an honorary Oscar for it. John Mills was great as usual and the young man who abandoned his post and then did something heroic was in another movie about submarines where he also lost his nerve but again did something courageous.
That young man was Sir Richard Attenborough (brother of Sir David Attenborough, the famous naturalist). Richard played John Hammond in Jurassic Park as well as many other films throughout his career including The Great Escape. In his later years he turned to directing and directed A Bridge Too Far and Gandhi. 😊
It doesn’t matter how many times I watch this wonderful film I am always moved by the thought 💭 that this is perhaps as close as we, those of us who were not even born during WWII or old enough to even have a vague recollection of it, will ever get to understand what the Royal Navy, the Allied Navy’s, and Merchant Marine Vessels and crews went through to keep us in the war and to keep the goods and materials needed to sustain the population getting to our shores, at home and in the country’s that we were protecting/liberating, if it was not for their sacrifice and determination I would probably not be writing about it, at least not in English 🏴. We don’t give enough recognition or gratitude for those who were “in peril on the sea”, especially the Merchant Marine, who faced the enemy with little to none self defence weapons and only a handful of Navy escort vessels to protect the huge number of ships in the convoys, slow lumbering vessels packed to the gunnels with a fraction of the needed resources that they were determined to get to their destination, We remember their sacrifice just once a year and we do it with much pomp and ceremony that is only right and fair, but the other 364 days it probably isn’t a thought 💭 in anymore than a fraction of the population, and then it will be the older generation that do occasionally think about the consequences of their actions on our lives, the younger generations are not even old enough to remember the Falkland Islands war, some will remember the first and second Gulf wars and everything that has followed from there, they aren’t even taught about WWII in any depth, if at all, and they are unaware of the geopolitical tensions that are currently brewing up in Ukraine and the Middle East, they are to focused on the woke and LGBTQXYZ+ brigade agendas and therefore know nothing of real importance, and if the call to arms were sounded today they would probably not be bothered to defend our nation and our freedom, and that makes me very angry and sad. Lest We Forget. Thanks for sharing this brilliant film, much appreciated. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴🇺🇦🇮🇱
There is a very brief scene of matelots boarding the ship. The night scene is backlit so you only see the dark shapes of the actors. One of the speaks with a very distinctive voice. Can you pick the very well known actor?
THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING WW2 MOVIE ❤❤
Blast it, this film represents the England I love even from the other side of the pond. Dinky-Doo making me teary eyed and all.

Great to watch again, thank you Scottie
A Pleasure 🙏 ☺️
The final scene where he is shaking hands with the survivors is great, understated film-making.
A Masterpiece of a movie

Brilliant film, you are spoiling us with these choices mate. Thank you for sharing.
A Pleasure 🙏 ☺️
Noel Coward based some of this movie on his friend Louis Mountbatten’s ship at the beginning of the war.
Check out the synopsis where it says description
Apparently he had enough material for an eight hour movie- might have made good miniseries
