    Description:
How long should you wait before tasting your whiskey, rum, brandy, mezcal, tequila, or other spirit? As it turns out, there's a strong scientific argument for waiting 5-10 minutes. It'll allow you to pick up more aromas rather than getting just a nose full of ethanol. And I'll explain the science behind this (in excruciating detail) in this video!
I hope you enjoy following along in this deep dive, where we look at the molecular dynamics of the spirit liquid and the fluid dynamics of the volatile aroma compounds in spirits! Keep in mind, I reference two simulations modeling what happens at the surface of whisky and I use calculations to estimate the behavior of the aroma vapors through the head space. I have made several assumptions along the way that aren't entirely representative of pouring yourself a glass of booze in real life. But I think that it provides a good foundation for understanding the evolution your spirit goes through as it rests in a glass.

You're such a nerd. In a good way! Thank you for doing the math. Will be letting the drink breathe more before getting into it

No offense taken! I wonder if the longer format video might be more helpful. Ultimately, letting your glass of spirit sit for about 10 mins should help bring out more of the desirable aromas. Here's the link to that video if you're interested:
